One of most wonderful magical world stories for youth that I have read so far, almost on par with His Dark Materials trilogy or better than it. If you enjoyed Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia or any fantasy novel by Cornelia Funke, as a child/teenager you will enjoy this story. It is wholesome, mysterious and fantastic in this alternate reality of the British Empire. This is something adults will enjoy too if you want to feel like a kid again. If you’re not interested in this sort of thing, then select Not Interested.
I’m reviewing after reading 15 chapters, but I find the editing/spelling/grammar to be up to snuff in each chapter while it is common to find in long chapters like these ones. There are breadcrumbs that aren’t too obvious to indicate the different plots happening within the story. The language used is wonderous and accessible which leads to excellent descriptions of the characters and places Osric goes to within this story. The transitions between scenes is fluid. A few of the characters are starting to round out and will possibly become complex as the adventure carries on. With all of the literary and plot devices laid out so far; I think this is a well written, brilliant story that could be in an English language class for youth.
I might be the only one who thinks that, but when I was in school Harry Potter and The Hunger Games were some of the books we got to study in class. I enjoy the struggles our MC goes through and the pure love he has for his faith, as well as the respect he seems to have for others loving their own gods, which are as interesting or more interesting than the books I had to read in class.

So far this book is off to an amazing start. Through only 3 chapters you are given a great understanding of the world's magic system and grow to care about the main character and his choices. I am very excited to see what comes next both from his choice in magic, and also his relationships with the other students.

Story: This is a magic school meets 'gods granting spells' kind of story and the premise is very interesting. A well thought out plot is slowly developing, starting from hints, questions and mysteries. We're still in the setting up stage, heading towards a satisfying build up and eventually, hopefully, a great conclusion for what I assume will be the first in a series of books. There's not much else to say on the story yet, since we're just starting in on the plot. Personally, I really enjoy the little set-up nuggets sprinkled in the chapters that will surely become important later. Chekhov's having a party in here.
Grammar: Very well written, no glaring mistakes in grammar, spelling or sentence structure that I could notice.
Style: Easy to read and descriptive but not tiring. One thing that trips me up a bit is the pacing, but it'll hopefully be smoothed out as we go.
Characters: The characters feel like real, normal people, which is good for the realism, but they also don't have too many defining characteristics yet. Their backgrounds are distinct and they act accordingly to them but other than that, their personalities need a little more fleshing out. But again, we're only just starting to know them, so they'll become more distinct as the story progresses.
All in all, I'd recommend this story to people who enjoy magic schools and mysteries. I genuinely think this has incredible potential and will be following along to find out more.

The "pitch" for this story, going by the blurb, is a magic school adventure with elements of mystery and sacrifice for power. While there are signs of all of those elements in the released chapters so far, the narrative is missing dramatic tension. So far it feels just like Osric is a kid going to magic school - sure, there's a chance that the dumb bets he's making with his friends will embroil him in some sort of mysterious conspiracy, but there's not much riding on the bet, so it feels weak. Same goes for the first mystery he's presented; the only reason Osric is investigating is academic curiosity, so stakes are low.
Overall, although the grammar and characterization is strong enough that I don't particularly have a reason to stop reading just yet, the lack of hooks isn't giving me a reason to keep reading, which is discouraging for something that's eight chapters in already. I keep waiting for the plot to start, and that's not a great sign.
