Description
On the distant planet Ko, the sky is falling. Omen, the planet's moon, is breaking up and will soon come down on the world, wiping it clean of all life.
Ko holds a treasure on its surface, though; not gold or silver or unobtainium, but intelligent life.
To save them, the crew of the Craton must not just make first contact, but convince the inhabitants of Ko that they face insurmountable danger.
Which means going down and meeting them, face to face, living with them, and gaining their trust. The dangers are high, and the costs may be even higher. Even survival and success may leave one changed forever.
And behind it all lingers the question; why is the moon falling at all?

- Evelyn AdelbergRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, I'll preface this by saying that I did not read the previous volumes, I saw this on the recent updates page, loved the premise, and jumped in. Hence, I presume all the characters and the alien races have been established in the previous books. Although I did find this story light on the physical descriptors, as I think only the ship's AI got described (once again, not holding that against the author, for all I know they've all been described in every single one of the 11 books I hadn't read 😉).
There are a few inaccuracies or vague statements about the science that I've picked up on, but I don't think that's something most people who don't have an astrophysics background would notice.
I did appreciate the hard sci-fi aspect this story has going on, with no "space magic" disguised as a technology with an unpronounceable name. It helps ground the stakes, and make us feel the urgency of that evacuation, because we know there won't be a "Psy Pyto-Moxy Mothership" showing up at the last minute to save everyone.
TLDR: the premise is really fun, and really well executed. Give it a shot, even if you haven't read the previous books. I was fine jumping in, and I'm sure you'll be too.
