Nocturne -- Book 1 -- Umbral Savage (Similar to Primal Hunter and Defiance of the Fall)
A young man who has had a lifetime of loss, joins the FBI, then after two years, the HRT special unit. His last mission ends up with him being fired to salvage a politician’s career that's being groomed for the Presidency. Gideon refuses to play ball. A military Black Ops unit attempts to permanently silence him. He survives the assassination attempt and vows vengeance. He becomes a vigilante, spending two years killing corrupt, high profile players, all with the goal to end the politician and the military and FBI leaders that began it. Excerpt from Nocturne
A man of wealth and means sits at an ornate table in a high end luxurious hotel speaking into a cell phone, a malicious glint to his eyes as he closes another million dollar pharmaceutical merger.
He is blissfully unaware of the man behind him, in a black leather trench coat, a hood obscuring his face in deep shadow, a pistol with a suppressor aimed at the back of his head.
Both are frozen within the moment of moments, between a breath and sift of sand, one with the anticipation of a killer, the other, riding high upon the arrogance of wealth.

- GreatestRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Was able to deliver engaging story even without images. How much more if there was?!!
Gideon was relatable. The story telling was in good pacing. Every information was important to the story.
Quality over quantity. This is how it's done.
Freddie completes this. The humor was natural. I hope more writers do it like this! Thanks for the gift! - OvrK0Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Solid/good world building and action all round. Great use of litrpg stats and skills to illustrate motives and challenges of characters without being crunchy. All the characters and locations feel whole, flushed out and have their own distinctive personality. Very well written.
Honestly, writing style is glass smooth, well thought out, solid and just fun to read. - ShunyataRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What an adventure!
With such deeply emotional and challenging backgrounds, it's sure to be and exciting journey to take=part in. I can't wait to see how the 'fated couple' grow, to fill out each others needs — hopefully heal past wounds, and progress toward an ever growing empowered glory.
A timely story indeed — May the muse continue to guide your pen with passion, depth and meaning - Dudethe1stRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Great story and incredible characters. The idea that the system itself is the main enemy is a fantastic twist. Character development is spot on with real trauma reactions to the horror of what's happened.
The only reason for not giving the max stars is the author has a very shaky grasp on how to use commas. Run on sentences abound. Still, it's a fun read and easy to get invested in. - Verden_NRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Oh-h well. Let's start. Shall we... Up until chapter 8 everything was great. MC with balls, who's not easily influenced, he got some sort of lone wolf character, which I personally enjoy.
Not gonna tell you spoilers, but recent shift in ch 17 made me feel weird. At some point out of the blue side character is getting more attention and potential buffs than MC. I shall say that female lead stories with good or at least decent character is hard to find. And as far as I can see the story began with Gideon as MC.
Continuing to talk about weirdness. The relationship between Gideon and L'Sana. It's very strange. The author hints at the fact that they are almost ready to sleep with each other, then in the same paragraph he mentions "it's not time yet, we have to go through the tutorial".
I understand everything, but I would like to see some certainty in the work. Although maybe I'm rushing things. In any case, the problems don't end there.
Remember what I wrote about the main character being independent at the time of chapter 8 and so on? Well, you can forget about all that.
Now all of his actions, all of his concern for people he practically doesn't know. (Уes, yes, within a few chapters of constant reminders I get that Gideon can't help but compare them to the women in the basement from chapter 1) He's doing so simply because he's "kind" to the unfortunate ones. Okey?
In my mind, if the story is about a loner, he stays a loner until the end. Same story about Primal Hunter first chapters I can't remember anymore... 40 or so? The protagonist spends all time alone. Even co-operation with anyone was temporary. Throughout the tutorial, he never got attached to anyone.
Also, Gideon knows he's probably being manipulated, but he lets them do it anyway. That's what pissed me off the most. Chapter one. I won't let anyone control or direct me.
Ah, Unra or whatever her name is asking her to spend her already little time analysing the area and identifying targets to train her grandda - DashrutoRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The mc goes from being serious about revenge and being a loner to falling for the first women who talks to him. The constant flirting and annoying interactions take away from the serious feel the novel originally tries to portray.
Why would he give this woman his system gifted summon? He barely knows her. - AshericRoyal Road★★★ 3.0story is honest about its influences, better than defiance of the fall and not quite as good as primal hunter, except the author isnt afraid of showing genuine emotion in his characters so that automatically makes it better than both story wise.
Overall honestly not terrible but, but when the author attempts to like, like add voice by, by repeating words with a comma in the middle... it gets really annoying. Just describe the characters' tone, please for the love god. Hesitantly she said, "xxx." Or "B-but i really etc." Or whatever you're trying to convey. Extra words looks like a typo at best... and most of the time is just incomprehensible.
And then there are the weird idioms that feel like they come from pirated 80s b movies with subtitles by someone whose first language is not english. tapsy turvy, dirty pool, are the only two i remember off the top of my head. I am writing this review holding to the standard of someone who is a native english speaker... which i recognize not everyone is... but it feels patronizing to assume the author isnt.
There's some genuinely poetic lines hidden in there, but it's really difficult to tell what's intentionally impressionistic and what's just poor editing.
I don't enjoy how immediately attached the two main characters get, i think the story would benefit if the romance didn't start kicking in until they save eachothers lives before they warm up to one another... but given the elf's history of trauma it's not entirely unrealistic. It's not healthy but those kind of immediate attachments are so common there's a dsm entry for it: trauma bonding.
Also should probably include stub in tags. - ShadowKnight6992Royal Road★★ 2.0So the grammar is wonderful no immersion breakers.
the plot is really nicely put together though it’s somewhat similar to “A Novel Concept”. Especially with the girl that’s evil and for some reason he can’t kill her, then she becomes the annoying thorn that’s constantly trying to kill or pester him.
The side characters are really good, though it’s kinda annoying how the first characters we meet are really unlikable and cliche.
Now the mc, I can’t find accurately describe how disappointed I am with the Mc, like he’s an ex fbi agent that had a conscience, got fired for it then had to become an hardened assassin and has been for a WHILE like YEARs and has pretty much evaded black op hit squads and has worked his way up to kill CEO’s and senators and it’s even stated he can only do this thanks to his planning and professional mindset.
THEN the system comes and he turns into A GOD DAMN HORMONAL TEENAGER that can’t plan or use his skills properly even though he’s been killing for years and almost dies instantly also he’s INSTANTLY is paired up with a girl who he can barely communicate with and NOT be horny and blush, like it’s almost disgusting how such a good template of an Mc was just crapped on and continues to be crap.
so basically good template of a novel just remove the Mc and put someone competent and can actually communicate with females and not be a hormonal teenager who can’t think and tries to bang anything and bang good novel again - DecadoRoyal Road★ 1.0I was very much enjoying this story right up until the end of book six which I found to be utterly terrible.
Thoroughly killed any interest I have in reading about the system, the world and any future events or arcs.
Four Stars removed accordingly to reflect my annoyance at such an unsatisfactory conclusion.
