Mythical Contract [A LitRPG Action Story]
Community Rating
Description
Jujutsu Kaisen meets OG Naruto in this fun, action-packed LitRPG!
Rui Payne must get stronger if he wants to remove the Fallen Star Curse from his body!
In a world where humans and mythical creatures can form Contacts for mutual benefit, there are those who would attempt to make their own Myths for personal gain. These manmade creatures are called Curses, and they are the unpredictable, dangerous versions of the beings they were made to replicate.
Now that he's escaped from the Cult of the Fallen Star, Rui Payne has only one goal: Remove the Curse from his body. Unfortunately for him, that's impossible! At least, that's what he thought until a strange man approached him with a proposition...
Why should I read your story? I'd rather read Cradle again.
Thanks for asking! My favorite kinds of stories are ones that can balance action with good character building and fascinating worldbuilding. I've been perfecting that skill over the course of my writing career, and Mythical Contract is the end result of that pursuit. This is the part where I give bullet point expectations, but I think the first chapter gives you the best idea of the story's tone and mood. Instead, I'll list a few things that chapter won't explicitly tell you.
Not Crunchy- This isn't a stat block heavy story. You can turn your brain off and relax while reading this.
Fast Paced- People have places to be! The story is written so that the plot progresses every 5 chapters or so. I want to respect your time.
Accessible- Goes hand in hand with the first bullet, but Mythical Contract is a LitRPG you can read even if you aren't particularly a LitRPG fan. You won't be overwhelmed by the System elements.
Despite all I just said, I know every story isn't for everybody. If you're curious, I say read the first six chapters. If it hasn't captured your interest by then, it just might not be for you. Which is fine! I promise... Anyway, thanks for reading this far. I hope you enjoy the story!

Style
Written in first person POV and the pacing was just right. The author effectively used the elements in the story to propel the story forward.
Grammar
I have spotted no errors.
Story Score
The story was unique, despite the claims of being inspired by anime titles. Still, it holds on its own. I read more than five chapters, not the fact that I didn't understand the story but to know more how the story progress.
Character Score:
I see that the character has reluctance in using his inner ability. The moral conflict of the main character is intriguing. It is relatable and felt similar to Naruto and other anime I see.
Concluding Note
It's a fun story in overall. I have seen that the author had making a good pace to the story, there is a balance in the information given to the reader, interesting characters. Thank you for introducing to me your story, it was a fun read and will definitely follow for more. - DimensionalWriter27Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pretty solid story overall, the inspirations for it are clear to see from a mile away, but with their own interesting take which makes then fresh.
Style: The writer's style is a peculiar one, it certainly aims for a style similar to that of a shonen manga/anime, but I can't help but feel it doesn't commit enough to be like a story that could fit in Japan? I think if it wasn't for the lack of the use of honorifics I could see it being less noticiable.
Grammar: I honestly didn't notice anything out of place here. The language and word choice were both on point, and I didn't notice any punctuation mistakes. Granted, English isn't my main language, so although I can vouch for being perfectly readable, I can't say for certain if it has perfect grammar.
Story: The story begins right in the middle of the action and I am certain that it is going to keep that up as it continues. Dropping readers into a situation where the dangers, power system and how brutal it will be is established pretty early on. Although I admit I did get a little lost on not knowing what kind of world this was, I wouldn't even be surprised if the story wasn't even happening on Earth due to the lack of explaining on what IS this crazy world with even crazier monsters. Thankfully, the characters helped me forget this problem.
Character: So far, there haven't been many characters introduced or gone into depth with outside of Rui and the Fallen Star to a lesser degree. As for Rui, he feels like a weird mix between Sasuke's edge and Naruto's internal monster, not bad...in fact, I'd argue it can be good, but certainly different from the norm. - Dylan KingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0"The Mythical Contract" is a captivating start to what promises to be an interesting ride. Heavily inspired by Jujutsu Kaisen, this story wears its influences on its sleeve, and that's sort of why I love it.
The writing style in "The Mythical Contract" is vivid and engaging. The author's use of descriptive language, especially during action scenes, really helps to bring the story to life. The detailed fight sequences create a clear and immersive picture of the Mcs struggles. The blend of internal monologue and external action keeps the narrative balanced, making it both introspective and thrilling.
The story begins with a bang, throwing the reader right into an intense battle. This immediate immersion into the action hooks the reader's attention. The plot hints at deeper conflicts and mysteries, such as the nature of the Curse and the protagonist’s past, which adds layers of intrigue. The conflict between the character and his abilities, his reluctance to use them etc. is a common trope for a reason, and it's well executed here.
The characters are well-developed and intriguing. The protagonist, struggling with his inner demons and the external threats, is both relatable and compelling. His moral conflict about using his Curse adds depth to his character. The secondary characters, like Fallen Star and the surrounding humans, are also well-crafted, each adding their own unique flavour to the story. The interactions between these characters feel natural and help to build a rich, dynamic world.
The grammar in "The Mythical Contract" is solid, ensuring a smooth reading experience. The sentences are well-structured and free from noticeable errors. The dialogue flows naturally and reflects the personalities of the characters effectively. This strong command of language helps to maintain the reader’s immersion in the story.
Overall, Mythical Contract is an excellent start to a heavily anime inspired story with some simple litRPG elements that make it an excellent starting p - LitRPG AdventuresRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Mythical Contract: A LitRPG Action Story is exactly that: a story full of action. We are immediately thrown into a battle scene and learn the main character has a special ability he views as a curse. He fights on, both physically and mentally and we get to see that this will be a multi-fronted story right away.
Style: The story is told in first person, past tense point of view. This is perfect for getting to know the main character. As far as the LitRPG style, Mythical Contract is on the light side, and that is by design. You still get the gaming elements, but don’t have to worry about crunching numbers or keeping track of damage done with each attack. Me personally, I like that.
Story: Without giving anything away, this is a unique story where the main character struggles with his own “gifts” as well as the monsters he must face.
Grammar: The grammar in Mythical Contract was good. I’m not overly picky with that, but I didn’t feel like there were any mistakes that pulled me out of the story. That is all I ask for in a good Royal Road read.
Character: The main character is flawed (literally – he has a curse) but he uses that to his advantage when needed. It shows his resourcefulness and makes you wonder if he will ever overcome the curse or just accept it and move on with life. - PeterRobertsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: The story centers on Rui, who possesses the Fallen Star, a Curse that grants him supernatural abilities and has a distinct personality. This Curse leads to an internal struggle for Rui, as he balances its power with his own morals. The setting includes a diverse world of factions and supernatural beings. As Rui interacts with characters like the enigmatic Yugo, the plot explores themes of power and morality.
Summary: In "Mythical Contract," Rui's journey with his Fallen Star Curse is both thrilling and morally complex. The story delves into his challenges and relationships, particularly with the mysterious Yugo. The world-building is rich, with a unique magic system and vividly described action scenes. Rui's internal conflict adds depth to the narrative, making it a captivating read.
Character: Rui is a well-developed protagonist, torn between the allure of his Curse's power and his own ethical beliefs. His interactions with Fallen Star, which has its own personality, add a unique dynamic. Yugo's character introduces an element of mystery, further complicating Rui's journey. The characters are engaging and add depth to the story.
Grammar: The writing is clear and free from major grammatical errors. The dialogue is natural, and the pacing keeps the reader engaged. The story's language effectively conveys the characters and action, making for a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. - RainyLiquidRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well I've read all that this story has to offer so I think that I'm pretty qualified to leave a review.
I'd like to start by talking about one of my favorite scenes. It's our first look at the power system. The main character Rui, sacrifices a limb for the ability to control fire. That in my opinion was a pretty neat way to set up the overall theme and power system of this world. That being a system that involves around contracts.
So what is this story exactly?
Well in terms of style it is very over the top and animesque in nature. Characters have very anime sounding names such as the MC who is literally called Rui Payne. There are times when this can get a little to over the top, but also times where I feel the series doesn't commit enough. Action scenes are written almost like something straight out of a shonen anime, but the characters and a lot of the ways they talk and react feel more western in nature and there are times where it clashes. That said it is still worth a read and the fight scenes are pretty good.
The story in turn is a little cheesy but I wouldn't say that's a bad thing. As said before it is trying to mimic a shonen protagonist. It even mentions this in its bio. My biggest issue with it is at times I am unsure what is fully going on. A lot of information can be dropped on us without a moments notice while also some information is briefly explained about and not clarified and werl are left to put it together ourselves. This can be done well at times but there were a lot of moments where I was more left confused on the plot. What I did understand I greatly enjoyed and am excited to see more of for sure.
That brings me to the characters Rui, and the Fallen Star Curse. My only real gripe here is that it is almost a rip off of Naruto, or Yuji. Powerful demonic force that is able to help the young MC out when they need it. Unlike those stories though the Fallen is almost like a secondary character. In Naruto we rarely see the 9 tails early on. In JJK S - RavensFantasyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style/Story: The story follows Rui and his Fallen Star curse/ability on an exciting adventure. The story has a unique magic system that seems to give each character a slightly different ability. Rui, was given a curse that has a personality of its own and often talks back to him which makes for a fun read. This curse appears to be the source of his magic abilities making for a unique character.
The story gives enough detail into the scenes and the abilities at hand, that helps the reader visualize what is happening. The dialogue and fight scenes are done well! The overall prose, paragraph length, and chapter length was great to me.
Grammar: I did not see too many grammar mistakes, if any at all. The story was written well!
Characters: As mentioned above, Rui is given a curse that has a personality all to its own. Rui is able to talk to The Fallen Star through telepathic means which gives the ability/curse a life. Later on we get introduced to Yugo who seems to have taken an interest in Rui. They form a partnership of sorts that I can only hope is for the better and not the worst. Rui overall is an interesting character, with an interesting capability that has me interested to see how it gets developed in later chapters. Especially if he continues to utilize his magic and grow in power. We are given a bit of his backstory early on which helps us understand why he wants to rid himself of his ability. Rui is an enjoyable and well-developed character to read.
In Summary: Mythical Contract was an enjoyable read that contained a unique source of magic, great fights, and an interesting main character! Nicely done! - longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Review as of Chapter 1.8 Wrath Strike
Story:
This story is a LitRPG that reminds me a bit of my own writing. It is definitely my beloved LitRPG/Progression genre, but it is enough unique with its world building and naming that I would imagine it turns some people off- IT SHOULDN'T. No shade here. I wish more stories would take a unique look at the genre. Okay enough on that. This story follows a cursed Rui Payne as he fights interesting creatures. There is some cool interactions between these creatures and the humans (contracts, curses, etc.). I dig it.
Style:
The author is right up my alley, as I've already said. The world building is unique without being overwhelming. Descriptions and fantasy elements are cool, but don't take me out of the story. There is a mix of dialogue and internal monologue that I find is essential when I write (and read).
Characters:
You got Rui as the MC. He is a bit torn between getting more powerful and fighting the curse inside of himself. For support, you have Yugo and Averyl. SPOILER: Yugo tries to recruit Rui and is extremely powerful, but Rui isn't too sure about it. Avery is that nurturing / maternal character in Rui's world. I like the back and forth and again, give a gold star for the interactions between characters.
Grammar:
My least favorite category to score, but it is one that can cause a huge problem. If you story is amazing, but the nuts and bolts aren't good, no one will read your story. This isn't a problem for this story. The grammar and structure is great. I actually enjoy reading this story, so I feel like the grammar and punctuation must add to it for me.
Overall, I love it, and I hope that you give it a chance. You will like it too! - sinoutRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0*This review contains some minor spoilers*
I’ve never watched Naruto, but I did read a few volumes of Jujutsu Kaisen. Mythical Contract being in some respect similar to the latter was one of the reasons I decided to pick this book up. And I'm glad I did!
The story takes place in a world where evil creatures known as Jikininki terrorize the population. Special organizations have been formed to battle them. The main character is an eighteen-year-old guy named Rui who fights Jikininki. Rui has a little secret—he is a Curse User, which means he has some kind of supernatural being trapped inside him, known as a Curse and named Fallen Star. Tapping into its power, he can receive incredible abilities that let him defeat Jikininki without breaking a sweat. However, he resists the temptation to do so. Curse Users like him risk losing control over themselves if they excessively tap into their hidden powers. And Rui wants to avoid that at all costs.
In a later part of the first story arc, he encounters Yugo, a member of an organization known as the Seekers. His level is 500, which makes him much stronger than Rui, whose level is only 20+ at the moment. He knows Yugo can kill him easily if he chooses to, and even utilizing the Curse wouldn't be much of a help in such a scenario. However, Yugo is not looking for a fight, instead he seems to be willing to assist Rui in leveling up and becoming stronger faster than he could on his own. Despite some initial hesitations, Rui ultimately agrees to accept Yugo's help who seems to have ulterior motives for training him. What this partnership will entail remains to be seen in later story arcs.
The story kicks off with a gripping action scene and maintains its momentum throughout. It grabs your attention right away, holding your attention with suspense and mystery. The narrative leans toward a PG-13 rating rather than an R, featuring occasional brutal and gory moments but without focusing on graphic details. The story is well-balanced bet - tobascoasakoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A solidly written piece of work. It clearly draws a lot of inspiration from anime/manga as per the description but this works to its credit. The characters and setting, that while use clear tropes, are used in a fresh and original way. I understand the lack of honorifics as this is not translated in the first place in many modern works anyway. As a former head of localization, I can assure you this is common place.
The story is fast-paced with lots of actions, giving little time for you to breathe. It starts you off right at the deep end with the overhanging danger, the magical/power system of the world that sets the limitations and logic of the world. I would argue that this is not in fact shonen, but closer to seinen, in the way it goes about this.
As for the grammar, I could see no massive errors or things that would detract from the reading experience. That being said, it could benefit from an editing pass to tighten up a few things here and there.
The characters are well done, especially the relationship between Rui and Fallen Star. It has the temptation for more power going about that makes for a healthy tension-filled relationship. On a personal level, CAPS for the dialogue works for short bursts... but I just find it a little difficult to read when it is long series of sentences.
The dialogue between characters feel a bit Western, but that can be forgiven by looking at it through the eyes that it was very well translated from the original source materials [haha!]. Later on we meet the powerful Yugo, that acts as a measure of Rui's progress and the goalpost for our mc to aspire to in a way [swords just clang off him].
Despite its few flaws, Mythical Contract was a very enjoyable read and I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of the various genres represented within! You will feel like you are meeting old friends!
