- Darius DrakeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am, generally, not a fan of Fanfiction, primarily because I have a dislike of authors messing with things that are cannon, and the admittedly few attempts I have tried previously did that immediately as the story's central "Gimmick". But I picked this story up out of curiosity & found out that this story not only doesn't do that, but effectively tries to keep EVERYTHING from Pokemon Media into the story as seamlessly as it can.
If you know how much media Pokemon has created over the years, you know that's a big ask, even within the relatively limited confines of this story.
The story follows the MC Joey, who is someone (possibly an Author Self-Insert) reincarnated from Earth into the Pokemon World. Specifically into a the body of an orphan future Youngster named Joey living in Saffron City before Sabrina took over the Gym. This is important as Sabrina, the future Gym Leader, is a Youngster alongside Joey, showcasing that this story is held notably in the time leading up to the events of the Kanto Games. Potentially the Generation 2 Remakes, but more likely an amalgamated world of all Pokemon Media carefully woven in a way that makes sense.
One of the story beats is about Murkrow in Saffron City, and that's all the details I'm giving as I don't want to give spoilers.
I am typically critical enough of everything that I avoid ranking extremes, but I do feel like this story earned it's 5 Star Rating. - AtruAlligionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Give this story a shot. The author writes well and has some good humor thrown in so you wont be wasting your time. What I really appreciated that is different is how well thought out the world is. It's not just thrown together like other fanfics but tries to pull together the pokemon world as we know it by explaing why things are the way they are without straying too far from the pokemon that we know and love.
- CamekeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great story with a unique take on what it takes to become a trainer who doesn't have the backing or sponsorship of a notable source.
Author seems to have really thought through the type of world he wants this story to be placed in with information placed throughout the chapters that give you an insight into the workings of the region
I hope to see more :) - ISDRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This wholesome little gem of a fanfic is a friendly little adventure to read. It is an Isekai but doesn't take itself too seriously nor is it trying to be one of the many "clever" subversions. Instead we have a charming junior trainer plot full of equally pleasant banter.
Our main character is a cheeky Pokemon fanboy "Fish to Water" type of Isekai protagonist; his upbeat attitude keeps the story flowing nicely. Our supporting cast includes a number of named characters, new trainers, and of course Pokemon. As is a must in a good Pokemon fanfic, the adorable little monsters have indivudual personalities that shine through dispite their nonverbal physiology.
The plot isn't very far in yet but, to avoid spoiling much, I'll just say it takes place shortly before the events of the gen 1 games. If you're a Pokemon fan this is a very pleasant light read. - Knight-of-DreamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was very fun fic to read, it immersed me from the get go, its a very anime style of writting but with it being pokemon I think its perfect.
Joeys journey is fun to read and fun to follow. A few unexpected moments and some comedy midway through. Glad he uses his meta knowledge.
A lot of other fics do not use it. Sad he doesn't believe in capturing cool pokemon but from where he from as a youngsters its understandable he wants patners.
He sticks to his personal beliefs in finding willing partners which I can respect. - LanteanjRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts off with a patient and calculative MC Joey on the day of his Youngster license exam.
The youngster system is well fleshed out and logical. Although we see some cracks in it as the young whippersnappers are too annoying towards the older trainers.
The Pokémon feel alive and the interactions are amazing. The make believe conversations between Pokémon are a good comedic addition. The setting is realistic and does include Pokémon death as well.
Story is realistic with ups and downs, there is no rush to catch 'em all or to min max the Pokémon to catch. The grit and determination of Joey and his Pokémon towards the almighty grind is admirable.
The journey that he goes through and the growth in relationship between him and his Pokémon is great fun to watch and follow!
The slice of life parts of the story are really wholesome and are a welcome addition to the story. As the story is Pre-canon we get to see the earlier parts of journey of some of the characters in the show.
Did not find any major grammatical errors. There were some spelling errors which have been edited out.
Hope we get to see the culmination of Joey's journey and maybe beyond! - LiteraryWhoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm not sure the SI part of the story is really necessary, or even not detrimental to the whole. That said, for now it mostly just contributes to the humor, and helps the MC get out of scrapes he otherwise wouldn't. Bit of an easy out button for the author, in case he ever gets himself written into a corner? We'll see how it plays out.Regardless, the rest of the story is great. There are too many poke-fics about battle geniuses steamrolling their way through the gym circuit, and not enough about underdogs struggling their way to greatness through failure and misery. The MC here probably lost more matches in these first 50k words than some do in a full million. I'm not sure the author will really be able to pull off a proper scrappy underdog story, but at least he's actually trying.
- RaddddRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Short review because I just stayed up way too late reading this. It'sreally frikken good. I was starting to think well written pokemon fan fiction didn't exist. You can tell the writer understands what they're doing on a deeper level than most.Also... the fight scenes. How are they so good? Normally I'd be skimming through, but the battles here really jump off the page. Maybe because the move sets and situations are simple and grounded. Anyway, I look forward to more. Highly recommended!
