Description

Being a magical girl doesn’t pay, but being her rival might. Between working unpaid shifts at her mother's failing diner and struggling her way through senior year, Luc works as Magical Girl Gadget. Whipping up magical tools and fighting to do more than entry level jobs, every dollar she makes goes toward keeping the lights on at home. She doesn't have time for friends, and especially not rivals. Which is exactly what the mage commissioner's daughter, Marie Blanchet, wants to be. In the middle of Luc's most recent job, the new magical girl shows up, scalps her job, and declares herself as Luc's rival. Luc ignores it, until the commissioner gives her an offer she can't refuse. Luc doesn't have star power, but Marie does. He'll enter them side by side into the influencer fund, and pay her to be his daughter's rival. If she can make Marie shine, she has the potential to bring in bonuses that could change her life. She just had to be content with being the moon, not the sun. What to expect: - resourceful MC - toxic yuri - coming of age - slice of life/slice of action - occasional multi-pov - eventual poly (not harem) - posting M/W/F (plus some extra!) Update: Finally getting chapters up onPatreon, and thediscordis set up!

A grounded take on magical girls: magic is everywhere, its use is regulated, and magical girls are basically social media influencers (except they actually benefit society). The story itself is a close-up of the lives, shenanigans and drama of a handful of high schoolers, but the thought that has gone into the world at large is evident in the writing.
So, the lives, shenanigans and drama? In a word, juicy. We've got people awkwardly trying to understand each other, we've got the consequences of different upbringings, we've got unfettered whimsy that makes me giggle until I run out of air, and we've got what at least half of you are probably here for: a budding lesbian romance! It's the sweetest thing ever, I've been going "squeeeee" about it for so long already.
Also, I want to give a special shoutout to our main protagonist, Luc — full-time trauma bean and autistic icon. She has enough issues to share with the entire class, and it's a heart-wrenching delight to watch her work through them with her friends (if she can allow herself to call them that). The way she's a deer in headlights when faced with social shenanigans is immensely relatable and portrayed in a way I can't remember really seeing before.
If I had to find something negative to say, it'd be that one of the characters in the main group takes a long time to get much characterisation at all, leaving his presence kind of negligible, although that's very much how he is in-universe, too. Also, I keep noticing typos, but they aren't too distracting; on the whole, the text is evocative and doesn't take effort to read.

This is a nicely written story and I can say if you like the premises then you won't be disappointed. It's got likeable characters in a pretty cozy story and is quite satisfying to read. Already enough is written that it's good enough to read standalone. Both the writing quality and grammar are good, nothing to criticise there. Overall, definitely recommend if you like the premises!

What I like most about this story are the interesting characters. The focus is around two rival magical girls with very different personalities, and a lot of the fun comes from seeing those personalities interact. Other characters are also uniquely different, except for the main character’s childhood friend’s girlfriend’s brother, who mostly seems to tag along as a very relatable fifth wheel 😆
The magical jobs/wildlife encounters are not too violent; almost slice of life with a bit of relatable danger. No murder hobos to be found here!

Toxic Yuri between a girl who is obsessed with her crush and a girl who thinks the perfect girl is just a rich showoff
    and they're magical girls.
i have loved every single moment of this story so far and i get excited every time i see a new update

I view the magical girl web serial genre as having come in waves.
This story is in what I consider the new next generation following on the coattails of the giants that proved theres an interest in the concept, but coming to the scene later does not make it any less worth reading than the works that came before.
Misfit is telling an engaging story that blends traditional magical girl tropes with a misanthropic loner lead character who has been burned by society too many times not to growl and bite the hand of friendship when it is extended towards her, and I am absolutely here for the journey of self-discovery, healing, and somewhat toxic co-dependant yuri I expect that to lead to.

Very happy I stumbled upon this - its fantastic.
All of the characters are given personalities, not stereotypes of one's or an idea of one - a genuine personality with flaws and unique perception of the world and of others and they interact with each other in that way.
The world building is good so far, nothing so concrete or overexplained but is shown through the way characters inhabit it.
A enjoyable writing style, very easy to just read and read, with no noticeable grammar or spelling errors.
The story as of this review is still fresh and doesnt have many chapters, but I have high hopes for it. Especially the romance part

The Mc Luc is not nice™ to put it bluntly, she is blunt and brash and severely overworked and under payed, Marie is a rich nepo baby, with the expectation and need to be great to be a super star, so she works herself to perfection. They're both awkward, over workers who dont have friends (in Luc's case she doesn't trust the so called "friends" she does have, sad girl) and theyre mean to eachother, Marie because she's awkward and thinks its what rivals do and Luc is because she genuinely dislikes the persona Marie has, gah its very good and I can see a hundred ways it develops into something fantastic and I cannot wait to see how the author chooses to do so !
The worst part is that I have to wait till tommorow to read the next chapter

A tale that speaks of the past of my friend. This is a novel crafted with love and care building a soft magic system where anything can happen. The main driver tho is the relationships and wile the title of toxic yuri is there ot is quite misleading. This is a story about a person trying their best, getting over their biases, and making connections with other.

I found this story after searching for Yuri which is one of my best decisions I’ve done. Reading on Luc has been a great experience I caught up within a few days and I’m excited for what you got planned. I don’t have any experience with toxic Yuri I believe so I hope nothing goes too bad with Luc messing it up.

I happened across this story and its a gem. The main character, Luc, is a down on her luck magical girl who really wants to move past this part of her life. Then enters Marie, the rich girl who makes her life harder and more complicated, but also gives Luc the opportunity she needs.
At this point in the story I can't really say the Yuri is toxic, it really feels wholesome and cute and it makes me feel good inside. That might change later, but I really like how its shaping up to be right now. Would 100% recommend it, the character growth, plot, and setting are all fabulous.

(Tl:DR worth following despite its moderate perceived flaws in execution)
I very much enjoyed reading up to the current chapter per 03-02-2026 d/m/y
While reading i encountered a number of stumbling points where i felt information was sprung on me as reader that was known among the characters before, but not communicated.
The pacing is bursty with a rise and fall in tension which on it's own is enjoyable, but combined with not being sure i have the appropriate information it leaves me uneasy.
For example the social media thing was introduced very early on and rarely mentioned again until it was revealed that Luc made "an amount of money" from it. prior to that i was very unsure about Lucs economics which i mostly still am. This vexes me as her struggle for self-determination is heavily reliant on her economics and as such i struggle to gauge how it's going.
Luc is clearly an unreliable narrator, but it is hard to tell when i am reading her version of the world or objective reality. Which may or may not be intentional and i wont detract because of it.
Maisey frustrates me, she goes from overbearing jokester to heartfelt apology and back again so quickly i am left unsure of her sincerity. Her exuberance overshadows much of the cast, like light pollution drowning out the dimmer stars. I would like to see other characters take the initiative in driving interpersonal dynamics, with less pushing from her side in those instances.
Luc frustrates me, but for what i assume are intended reasons which i wont detract from my rating.
Her stubborn refusal of ANY outside help being antithetical to her desire to leave her hometown behind. An interesting dynamic of self-drive and motivation meeting trauma and self-destructive behaviour.
For a character whose power-set is disposed towards pre-planning i do hope she becomes better at that. the "always prepared" tagline was invoked once when the social media stuff was introduced, but has been invoked in a limited fashion.
