Mage Among Superheroes

Description
Turlough is a mage. He also happens to be an orc, generally lauded as being less intelligent than humans. He was unfortunately born with the Curse of the Barbarian, meaning that he can’t level up except through combat- which greatly hinders his ability to show he can be a proper mage. In a world with necromancers, dragons, invading armies, and all sorts of other monsters he would still be able to advance quickly, but unfortuantely… that world is not his world. An unprecedented peace reigns across the land, and in the last several decades there’s been little use for people capable of fighting- and thus little reason for people to fight him. So when he sees a portal in his master’s study he takes it, hoping to find a horde of demons or something equally foolish to combat at low level. But instead he ends up in a strange city full of skyscrapers and people running around in colorful outfits. Superheroes- and of course supervillains as well. What dangers and opportunities could await him in such a strange and unfamiliar world? Only time will tell. Inspired by many things in the superhero genre, and Super Minion specifically- though while the setting will share some standard elements, it is an original setting that will hopefully be as engaging as many of the other universes. Schedule: One chapter each Monday/Wednesday/Friday, approx. 2000 words. Cover art courtesy of Sininenblue (Thanks!)

The main character is interesting and genuinely smart, not the "I randomly know things I shouldn't" smart. He is learning and every chapter from his perspective has been worth reading. - TankyouRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Alright for the most part I like the story good characters good flushed out world I think. Why does there have to be a word requirement and makes no sense - alSeenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really loving this story, the overall story is very original. Class system meets superheroes. I can honestly say that I started this only because I caught up on all my litrpg stories, but once I started, I couldn’t put it down. There are some slower portions, but the author does a great job in keeping those sections interesting. The fights are fun and energetic. Really loving the bad super hero names (for those who are just starting this story, know that it’s a running joke that one organization (well, maybe a few) do not know how to name supers well. Loving it). Please give this story a shot. You have a unique MC, a story that tackles a range of issues, while keeping the majority a riveting ride through superhero mayhem. 5/5.
- PennyLMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an intriguing, creative story that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. I also appreciate that it is clean. The author weaves science fiction, fantasy and a bit of slice of life together seamlessly. An orc that does not like orcs is an interesting metaphor to why we do not like parts of ourselves.
- Lady LoinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Maintains a interest for longer than expected New characters are cycled in and out organically and they are all interesting in different ways sometimes you can see the options that are present and almost feel the dice rolls that the author used to make decisions but there is a point to them and it does help keep the story good and interesting
- Sparks2020Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Okay, major points given right off the bat. This is an isekai story starring an inhuman (orc) magic user getting ressurected into a world superhero world. Dang, that's just plain cool.
Turlough is a surprisingly good MC, whose fish-out-of-water status allows for exposition when needed without getting too intrusive. I like the fact that he's not dumb but somewhat quick to react, so he still gets into trouble.
Looking forward to reading more of this story, especially given its inspiration and willingness to play against type.
Highly recommended. - Dr_NemoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Enjoying the story a gret deal. The mix of supers, aliens, extradimensionals, and others makes for a great comicbook feel. Seeing supers in none hero/villain roles is fun. The dichotomy between heroes adn mercs is also interesting.
The parts with from his home world will I assume eventually tye in, but for now they are less interesting to me. The singlemindedness of the character means there is very little exploration of other aspects of the city or world not tied to his job. THa tis a bit of a shame. I look forward to his friends pulling him inot other activities adn experiences. And I always want some romance, but that may just be me.
Looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing. - malinizgeldiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'm at about chapter 100 in the novel. 9 months ago, I left it on the 40th chapter and put it on the list to read later. I'm reading now after time has passed and frankly I'm bored. I think everything in the first 40 episodes was better. However, I agree that the level of the book is very high. I definitely recommend you read it, but as you progress, both the life chapters and the war chapters can no longer hold the reader.
- LOLsuitRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Does what it says on the tin. The MC is an Orc who chose the Mage class, but has a curse where he can't get experience except through fighting. And the fantasy world he starts in is low on fighting, which is why he take a portal one day... into a super hero world, full of skyscrapers and cars.
Suddenly he has a place where he can fight villains, gain levels, learn new spells, and life is good. He gains a familiar, and starts working for a super mercenary company. They don't get as much press as the official super heroes.
Its got fantasy, super heroes, super villains, and several kinds of fish out of water type stories.
The worst that can be said about it is that its many years old, so comments won't be responded to, and there are occasional stretches of time between levels where maybe the MC has to do a different kind of work for awhile (translation magic, teaching an apprentice, diplomacy, etc).
The powers of the heroes are varied, & same for the villains. Different missions and plot arcs keep things fresh too. It also helps that the MC is basically good. His magic is more intuitive than scholarly, but there are certainly training arcs.
Its good stuff! - nahojjjenRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Review as of chapter 11
The story is in its early stages so far, but the pacing has been excellent & quick. The basic checklist of grammar, language and spelling are all good. We haven't thoroughly explored many other characters yet, but they already have some depth.
The story claims to take inspiration from 'super minion', and I'd say the super-hero world and ignorant main characters do give off a similar vibe. Although In super minion, the almost goofy main character contrasts a darker, grim world. Wheras this story gives a kinder vibe. The culture clashes have been enjoyable to read.
I won't give 5 stars yet, as the story is just starting, and is still lacking some critical elements to become a truly good story, but the potential is definitely there.
In the stories continuation, Id like to see:
- A clear goal being defined. Currently the driving motivation is simply the main characters desire to grow stronger, which might be difficult to carry the story with.
- More worldbuilding. How is their society different, with aliens and superheroes running about? How common are they?
I'd also suggest changing the cover image, and maybe the title. The story content is higher level than its promotional imagery.
I'm looking forward to reading more.
