Fair warning dear reader, this is an 'unfiltered' story, sometimes sweet, others bitter, touching some heavy subjects or problems, like crime, war, betrayal, pride, politics, revenge etc set in a Epic Fantasy backdrop with shades of Grimdark. In its heart of hearts though, it is an adventure. The Old Realms saga is only published on RR for free. It is in the author's plans to publish it on Amazon and other platforms at some point. Agreable writing, colorful characters (team Emerson ftw), battles, politics and adventuring all packed in this excellent story. And the high res map is a nice plus.Thank you Grimdux.
- Chevalier_9292Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0To put it simply this is a very very good story on par with the best on the market even eclipsing some of them, you can easily write a tv show from it even a series of movies(if you get to do it eventually do not let them bastardize it like everything that comes out these days)
I tend to pick on bad things and put them into the reviews that I make. Here there are so little that I think of them as divergence in preference mainly regarding the inspiration for the factions that populate the world but in time we will probably learn of them as well and how the current makeup or the world came to be.
One warning as with all stories that have thousands of pages it requires patience to read and most importantly you need to understand the world. Maps and the glossary helps with that so keep referring to them in order to better understand when you move from POV to POV. They are placed on every chapter when POVs need them so you can be easily informed
The good news is that you have 5000+ pages as of writing this review you will have weeks of good binging ahead of you.
Happy binging. - DarknesiusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is hands down the best epic fantasy series on royalroad. The world building and characters are well fleshed out and the books could easily be published. That we get to read this for free is insane.
That this series is not more popular I blame on the trend of game lit and short attention span of the readers. Sure, with epic fantasy you need some time to get into it but once you see how every storyline connects its awesome.
Give it a try, you definitely will fall in love with Glenn and Jinx, not to mention all the other characters. - GozindRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0English is not my native language so bear with me.
First of all, this book is super complex. Many things happen slowly yet surely.
Everything you would expect is inside here. The journey? The war and military? The politics? Or the romance? And even some nonsense from a silly to spectacular are here. The emotion of happy, glad, excited, or also longing, sorrow, anger and sad can be felt.
Also the detail for everything is crazy. Mad respect for that.
When something happen, it happened no matter what it is. Little to no plot armor fo lead characters.
Also, there's a big map to guide you through this book.
The writing it's not one dimension storytelling and can be overwhelming for some early reader (myself inculded lol) because different POV make it more confusing. I recommend read the author previous book to introducing the background of story and characters as well as familiar yourself with author style. Nonetheless it's unique and interesting.
The characters have a 'breath' for themself. Theirs emotion can be felt alas for myself. They can be lacking in many ways. Some error of judgement or anger that's out of control can be felt. Emotion, habit, personality and background each of every characters is unique and surprisingly for the side characters they're not hollow either. But maintaining a lot of characters can be confusing lol.
Overall, this story is just like jigsaw puzzle where every pieces it's important. Interesting and fun. - HorstRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of those titles that seem too good to be posted on RRL. This work here qualifies as professional work through and through. If you're up for some medieval warfare and GoT style intrigue and politics across continents you'll find yourself enjoying this. Also includes tons of swearing and wonderful language.
- JustawayRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In about 2 and a half week, I’ve read all chapters including the prologue and I can confidently say it’s one of my top 10’s.
I started with the prologue of course and even though the story gets really interesting in the books after, I was hooked immediately. Fleshed out characters all with logical, emotional, selfish, good views on te world around them. No goody two shoes or characters with plot armor. Anyone can die and through the loss of important people around the main character(s), they grow.
i love the roguish, close to antihero type of MC that is portrayed by Glen and enjoy reading his chapters most of all. While I’m mostly in it for the plot and the character development and dialogue between the many interesting characters, the, sometimes, long battles scenes i often just skim.
the grammar and use of wording is great, like a proper book and not some amateuristic style of writing where only the most basic of words are used to portray detailed scenes.
just give it a try, you’ll love it too!! No way around it, thank you Grimdux! I’d love to see you continue this story for a long time and while at times I was reading it and though that around chapter 550 you’d be done, i’ve now got the feeling that we’re only halfway there which is great. If you start a Patreon, I’ll get a membership! - Major VexRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While the first book in the series was more background building the next (2?) start to really develop the characters with a diverse group of heroic, idiotic, funny, cunning, "dohh!!" and more personalities.
Multiple plots that intertwine like a pit of snakes make for constantly changing pace and feel to the story that keeps you interested. This is one of the better written stories on RR.
During the writeathon challenge sections there are a few grammatical and spelling errors likely do to the author trying to get his story down but it doesn't hinder the story and that is to be expected. I would anticipate he would fix these quick as readers point them out as he seems to respond quickly to posts and has so done while I am reading this.
I highly recommend this book if you like this tried and true genre of kings, queens, knights, idiots, relegious zealots, clueless characters, heroes that sometimes die, humans, dwarves, weird other races, and last but not least a bit of magic.
The maps are good too albeit a bit hard to jump from one to next at some times.
NOTE: i don't usually write reviews here because i have a problem with the whole scale and how it's done here. i really don't like that a 4 star review is considered bad and you're forced to say something is way better then it is or doom the author, . well such is the millennial culture of likes, swipes, thumbs (stolen from Ebert in a time when there were only 4 stars in the world and a 3 was good and a GPA of 3.3 would get you a magna cum laude and you couldn't even get a 4 because that was the top and things were graded on bell curves and there was no such things as extra credit or bonuses for taking advanced placement which really were just called classes at that time), and whatever other hollow praises people need from strangers these days to feel good about themselves. I digress, keep up the good work. - QueekRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Looking for a novel that can be purchased in bookstores? Look no further! This story is a cut above the rest, with an articulated plot, intriguing characters, and a beautifully imagined medieval fantasy setting. To fully appreciate the story, it is recommended that you read the first volume.
The second volume continues where the first left off, unraveling the mysteries that were introduced and introducing new ones. As the story progresses, the connections between the different characters become clearer, gradually piecing together a larger, more complex narrative.
One of the author's storytelling techniques is to use different points of view, which may seem disorienting at first. However, as you become more familiar with the characters, this approach becomes more effective, allowing the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the story's multiple layers.
The author avoids big, boring introductions that can detract from the overall interest. Instead, each event is introduced in a clear and engaging way, and the characters are characterized in a spectacular manner. The characters are not static, but rather develop subtly over the course of the story. For example, Glen makes choices that he would not have made earlier in the story, demonstrating a realistic character arc that enhances the reading experience.
Overall, the quality of the writing and storytelling is consistent throughout the book, and the author's attention to detail and character development make for an engaging and satisfying read. Don't miss out on this gem of a story!
NOTE: The story is intricate and detailed, which is a characteristic of the epic fantasy genre, although it may be overwhelming for some readers. The story starts off slowly and requires patience to put the pieces together before understanding what is happening, which is a plus for some readers but may be a negative for those who are used to more immediate reads. - SomeRandomBadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author is gifted at examining their own world through a literary lens, and this shows regularly through historical writings peppered into the main text. The authenticity of these sections really help sell the reality of the series.
Overall the story is told from many points of views with some excellent and surprising perspective being provided from both the "main characters" and the side characters. Even the side characters have complex and realistic inner worlds, making it hard to root for one in particular at times.
The political intrigue is realistic and well explored, pulling heavily from real world problems and solutions over the years.
All in I would consider this one of the most "scholarly" works on royalroad and an absolute treat. - TheExtra7Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love Kingdom Building Novels and Also Nothing to king.
It has both also other types of smaller sections.
this gem, I will say this is a well rounded, from start to finish novel. Once more with feeling. It is a story with a start, a middle and a finish, which isn't an easy thing to accomblish or find here.
It isn't easy to find a good story even from published authors.
