- luda305Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a great read. I'm not one for contemporary urban fantasy, but the author is wonderful at creating characters. The deuteragonists here are incredibly, bleakly real: like kids I knew growing up. They've had shit for lives, but they always seems to pick themselves up again.
The story behind when a new episode of shit begins for Melanie, possibly the worse in her life. From there, she meets Kendo and the pair end up in the other world, Alice in Wonderland style. It's an inhuman world, and has all the wonder and terror of the fae of old.
That said, the story is clearly divided into two parts: through chapter 6 and after it. The first has a strong sense of story, and it looks like a typical heroes journey where they come back after getting some macguffin (magic?) or possibly just working out their feeling. A budding romance isnt amiss. The second part begins with a very brave decision on the author's part. From there though, it's not clear what the arc is meant to be or how it fits into the overall story. Perhaps some question on the willingness to destroy? Certainly in part something about coping with your feelings, or not, though this was a significant theme of the first arc. In any event, it also bears mention that the author is excellent at constructing psyches of emotionally wrought characters and having them go through the stages of grief. - RznRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This is a pretty bleak premise as the blurb suggests - it is very short so I do not want to spoil it. My main issue with this piece comes from the POV snapping and way information is revealed. The beginning shifts strongly, reframing everything by the middle and then again by the ending. When it opens with a 'you' element it also becomes a bit of a mental shock that prevents immersion. Those elements kept me from getting into the piece and the shifts added to that.
