- scarecrow.authorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story started as a nice, wholesome slice-of-life. I really liked the bond between the characters, especially Val and Symon as a cat and the banter was also very very nice!
Then, things change for the magick-er, if you will. A whole new world opens up, with a whole lot of potential and a bunch of new characters introduced. Not a lot of magick shown yet, but there were glimpses that showed lots of possibilities
The story is nice, it progresses smoothly and the characters are interesting, although most of them have not gotten much screen time. The twins seem interesting and hope we expand on them more. Same goes for Val's friends, but especially for the twins!
The only negatives, in my opinion, are:
1) the author was pushing too much the "wow, my cat acts almost as if it was a human!" thing. Yeah, there should be hints but I think there were a bit too many of them
2) grammar and the way of expressing things. The weakest point in my opinion. Personally, I did not mind it, and it can definitely be improved over time as the author improves their english skills, so, it should be getting less and less of a problem.
Overall, a good story so far, well done!
P.S. The bond between Val and Symon is so wholesome! - MoonlightGardensRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0A story that’s fine already, but could be a lot better with some editing.
Style (4/5)
Though there could be some improvements, it isn’t too bad. The flow between sentences and scenes could use some improvement. There seem to be a couple of random POV switches, which come off as rather disorienting. I’m not really sure if it’s style or grammar, but there’s parts lacking in the dialogue that don’t convey emotion well. There are places that could probably benefit from having exclamation marks or ellipses added, as well as a stronger tag word for the dialogue.
Story (4.5/5)
It follows Val, more or less a typical teenage boy, going from an ordinary life to realizing his potential for being a wizard. It generally does feel to be much more casual than an epic adventure in the making—there’s a few moments of action, but overall not a lot. I’m not sure if this is a problem with the story or the aforementioned style issues and possibly the grammar, though.
Grammar (3.5/5)
The grammar is definitely the weakest part of the story. It often makes sentences confusing and can be particularly jarring in some cases. There are multiple grammar errors in every chapter, but spelling doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Character (4/5)
The story features a handful of characters. There doesn’t really seem to be anything particularly noteworthy about any of them, or at least anything that catches my immediate attention. Everyone except for Val and Symon almost blur together and it’s difficult to remember who’s who. - Shizzle BlitzRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Life As A Newly Awakened Wizard is some good stuff. If you're craving stories where a fantasy world is hidden behind the normal, this would be it! The story has some LGBTQ+ elements as well, for those who are interested in it.
The main thing that I took away from this story was how interesting the world of it seemed. The magical world has its own set of rules and laws that govern it. Sometimes there are lore dumps, but they don't go on long enough to become irritating.
In terms of characters, Symon would be the most stand out . He's more experienced than Val, so he sometimes exposits to him about the magical world, but his cat like tendencies provide a bit of humor as well. He has history with the main villainous group, who i hope we get to see more of as the novel progresses.
Grammar wise, there are obviously mistakes, but I don't really mind them. Perhaps the author should do a once over when they come to the end of the first novel or however they want to structure it. And as it goes on, the author's descriptions do improve, so I don't have any complaints there.
All in all, it's good urban fantasy and I appreciate it, as well as recommend it! - WhiteRose-BlueSpaceRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I don't have especially much to say on this unfortunatly but I'm keeping this at a four because I do see potential here and I don't like giving any less than a four.
The main issues I have seen with the story so far is it's prose and how it sets up scenes as they are both rather minimal. There could also be some work done to improve the formatting but thats not a especially big issue.
But anyway, good stuff. Symon is fun so far and there is clearing a fair bit of effort that has gone on with the worldbuilding here. That I can certainly say.
But is there is some work done to this it could be improved signifigantly.
