This story has an interesting premise and is competently written and could be a great story.
But then there’s the main character. He is completely uninterested in anything the story is about and has to be forced by circumstances to do everything. From using the available weapons in face of deadly enemies to actually managing the kingdom itself and its people.
It’s not character growth to have him betray the main promise of the story. It turns every sequence from a fun exploration/survival/leadership challenge to the other characters managing the spoiled whiny child, wanting out from the story, making him incredibly unlikable. Fix him and you’ll have the start of something great here. But until then I will skip this story.

Interesting concept and great writing. The characters are well written and have depth and humanity. enjoy the concept more than I thought and look forward to where this story goes. Action sequences don’t feel mundane nor do they feel robotic or overboard, spells and physical combat seems to be realistic and well fleshed out. The base/territory/city building is amazing.
I know the author had a child on the way but share your dad with us kiddo, we have a story to read!

All right hands down. This is one of the books that surprised me and how well it went about trying to translate civilization mechanics into a book. I'm only chapters in and I'm already sad that there's only four more chapters left to read. Which if you understand that I had to pause to do this because I like the author and I wanted to let you know that this is an excellent book then you understand my problem. When people insult a short person, it's because there isn't enough of them. This is my major critique. There is not enough this book out yet. And I would buy this in a heartbeat if it was an audiobook.Story this is a 5 out of five for me. The story is strong. It follows a brother who was destined to be some sort of cleric of the realm as the third born to a king.Grammar I have no problems with this. 5 out of 5.Plot/character. William raines knows what he's doing. I repeat he does know what he's doing and I want you to go under this blind understanding that Kingdom builders are a fun that sub genre.Style this one knocks out of the park. It's a 5 out of five.

If you like typical strategy/4X games such as Civilization and clones, and want to read about a kingdom made of hexagons slowly expanding over the map, then this is your book! ;D
It has an interesting premise as well as mechanics, the plot will take its time to advance (On the current chapter the kingdom is still pretty small, if it can be called a kingdom...) but so far it has grown in a good direction!
When I read this story I think of: Civ, Kingdom: 2 Crowns, and all of the hex strategy games from the flash era! So... If you like any of them, go for it!

While there are some parts that seem to be unclear, the author has answers and is kind enough to respond with clarification. If you accept that there are reasons why some things may not be clear initially, the story has a strong foundation and clear forethought. It's a solid and unique start to the kingdom building genre on this site. As long as the Author is willing to continue to edify, they'll have a long term reader in me.

There's a lot of great elements to this story, but I do come away from scenes not enjoying their execution, and its exclusively around dialogue.
It just feels very point A to B. There needs to be more there to help develop the characters and make them feel more like people actually interacting with each other.
Its hard to get invested in any of the characters when they feel like NPCs.

4 stars for what I feel this could or should be.
I think the story has a lot of potential but it feels like it was originally about the third son, who was completely unwilling to rule, and has been incompletely edited to be about the second son that went into the wilderness to found a kingdom.
It's often jarring. For a warrior, the MC is way too often mentioned to be "unpriestly" or "priestly". For doing exactly what he had planned, he sure seems to not have thought things through. Was he the one who knew about the plan to found a kingdom? Then why is his brother mentioned as the one to have studied how to do it?
I really want to like this series, but I'm getting slapped by confusion again and again. I feel it needs a bunch more editing and it will be *chef's kiss*.

I really like the magical mechanics at play here, the collection of essence and use of it to power "kingdom cores", etc. But it just does not quite work right. The pacing feels weird, and tension has been at pretty much maximum the entire time. The guy's dead brother(?) despite occupying half a dozen chapters of angst seems to be mostly forgotten now? And the group of survivors from a destroyed camp seem determined to fuck things up further... There were a couple murders. And now dealing with the situation that "his people" attacked and murdered some elves by trying to lie to them about it. Well, people in desperate situations I guess. But it feels like no meaningful progress is being made and no matter what happens next the situation is just going to get more precarious. It'sstressfulto read instead of fun. The story was better when it was one guy vs a giant monster, and I'm really not feeling the kingdom building aspect yet. Admittedly, he is young and in an incredibly stressful situation, and that excuses some number of fuckups, but at this point it's just getting painful to read instead of fun. I would have enjoyed it more if there were at least one reliable ally who could take physical form instead of the core spirit. The best part of the elf arc is inviting them to a meal. The rest is tooth-grinding. I also haven't seen any real depiction of orthodox religious belief except 'void bad'.Wish I could more clearly point to the vibes that grind my gears here, but I can't.

Let me be blunt and direct w/o niceties and distractions: From the initial plot consistently to recent chapters, some characters actions range from unlikely, illogical to outright stupid. Could be intentional, i wouldn’t know, but it triggers me. Worst so far is the „fair“ fight where the MC intentionally holds back his powers, risking being killed, then resorts to throw sand into his opponents face, but still refusing to use his powers.

None of the characters seem all that interested in being in the story or any of the goals. Every conversation is them having opposing goals and then a fight scene. The worst part is how much angst the MC has and seems to entirely focus on to the exclusion of his own stated goals or motives. Lots of exposition that doesn't explain anything? It was a frustrating read so far and this is supposedly the updated version. Too much is being packed into each chapter and so none of it gets an adequate or interesting explanation.
