Description

In the Shimurian Empire law surrounding magic is extremely strict and all those who are not priests of the Dragon God cannot use it unless they have gone through rigorous training and passed the appropriate examination.

All those who do not comply are executed.

When a young rogue mage gets caught stealing from a jewelry shop, a kind soul intervenes to give them a second chance to prove themselves deserving of their life and their exceptional talent. As if having to achieve in twenty-four weeks what most people need years to accomplish wasn't challenging enough, they will also cross paths with people who have... other plans for them.

Rogue mage(previously 'Heart of the mother') is a coming of age adventure set in a high fantasy world rich with lore, focused on the main character's journey to learn the secrets of magic, uncover a deadly fate and rally people to their cause on their unwilling crusade against The Mother. Along the way the cast will expand with more people on their own journeys, all of them deeply interlocked as they grow and learn together what it means to defy destiny.

You can expect:

A character-driven plot.

An unfolding narrative as the characters learn and explore the secrets of magic and the world at large.

Plenty of action.

Themes of belonging, grief and perseverance.

A non-binary main character and other LGBTQIA+ representation.

The Shimerian empire shows to be an interesting and envolving land where pulls the reader to know more about their laws, system and characters. The interaction and dialogue are well executed, portraying well the characters: their worries and traits. I am cheering for the main character to achieve their goal and to heat more about their parent’s backstory!

This was a fun read for me. The story was strong and well-paced. Angehl does a good job of building anticipation for what is to come without info-dumping or overwhelming the reader with too much detail.
The dialogs are where this story shines, and my biggest complaint is that it takes too long to get to one.
While the action scenes in the opening chapters are well done, I think they sell the story short, and it would attract more readers if it opened with a dialog.
Lu, the MC, is a fun character, but tens times more so, when they are talking with someone else. The banter with Nauzet is delightful as Lu comes across as a tough, streetwise, but caring character. (A “save the cat” moment would magnify this by ten!)
There are a fair number of grammatical issues in the story, but none of them are critical. Mostly a bunch of missing commas that the average reader won’t notice.
The biggest issue with the writing is that in the non-dialog scenes, there just aren’t enough new paragraphs. Generally, there should be a new one with every subject change (meaning acting character).
And it could stand for better proofreading as some words are missing, and some phrases are clunky. I’d suggest the author either reads it out loud to themselves or uses some sort of TTS, just so they can hear it.
This is a ‘they’ pronoun story, which can be tricky to pull off. Generally it works, but can be a bit disorientating during the opening few chapters.

This is a fun and engaging read with a strong, well-paced story that builds anticipation without resorting to info-dumping. I love the world the author created, it is richly imagined with compelling laws, systems, and characters that draw you in.
As someone who looooves action, I found those scenes to be well-executed and easy to visualize. They add a nice sense of momentum to the story without feeling overdone. Lu, the main character, is particularly enjoyable and I am loving the banter between the characters. The writing style is enjoyable and flows well, my only nitpick is a few missing commas here and there.
Overall, this is a promising start with great potential.

A good introduction to a story. Of course there are points to be emphasized. I believe that these will disappear as experience increases. After all, the most important thing for writing is to always keep writing and never stop. In this way, success can be achieved and thus no regrets will be felt for an unfinished story.
