Description

Samantha Pearsson was supposed to have it all. All the powers, all the knowledge, all the skill, and an entire team of similarly superpowered androids to back up what should’ve been the heroic career to define a century. Just as her creator intended. Unfortunately for Sam, a freak earthquake put a quick end to that. What possessed her idiot creator – a man with the power to build androids, not underground bunkers – to build his laboratory in the middle of nowhere, under loose forest soil, right next to a fault line? Samantha didn’t know, but what she did know was that in that decision, his dreams and her destiny died a quick, inglorious and (for him at least) painful death. Unfortunately for the earthquake, Sam was still alive! Sure, she only got one measly little power, a fragmented and corrupted database, no skills whatsoever and a skeleton of a personality, but so what? From her understanding, people have started with less (as babies) and if they could become heroes, why not her? As long as no one finds out she’s an android, of course.

Incognito has an excellent balance of everything that makes a super hero story fun to read. Interesting super powers are explored, in particular the protagonist’s ability feels distinct from many other shapeshifters characters. The fight scenes are great, the interpersonal drama is juicy, and the world building feels fresh and original while taking inspiration from other works in the genre. But most of all, I think the author does an excellent job building anticipation and subverting expectations which keeps me hooked.

Quick review notes: the spoiler boxes contain relatively light spoilers, but I'd still recommend not reading them until 3.13, which is when I'm writing this review. Also, and this should probably go without saying, but 5 stars doesn't mean I think it's the perfect best thing ever. It's just that 5 stars is a standard "I like it or better" review on Royal Road, and I don't want to damage the rating and discoverability by breaking from standard. More people should be reading this.
Samantha is an utterly charming protagonist, and the concept of an android having to learn how to be human is inherently compelling, and a good potential source of drama. There is not a whole lot to be said about her character yet, as she is literally still developing her personality, but there is a super solid foundation and it's fun to follow her point of view in the meantime.
A lot of the comedy comes from Sam's lack of understanding human and social norms. This isn't particularly surprising comedy, the fish out of water character is a common comedic trope, but that doesn't make it any less amusing, and it got a genuine laugh out of me on more than one occasion.
It spends a surprising amount of time focused on civilian life, something I appreciate, as I feel this all too often gets overlooked in superhero fiction. Even more impressively, it manages to blend these two sides quite well. The civilian and social time is what contributes most to Samantha's growing sense of self, and it so it doesn't feel like wasted time whatsoever. It also helps that all the side characters and their banter has been fun.
In addition to this, a number of the people Samantha knows in her civilian life are revealed to be superpowered themselves, and mutually unaware of the other's secret. As more pieces get added to the equation, it puts a sudden change on how the reader views the character, and it gets more exciting to see how it all turns out.
I think the real stand-out aspect of the work so far, that gives me

Binged it in one day, thoroughly captured by the pemise, story beats, characters/characterisation and more!
I love a story that keeps you on your feet but doesnt try to overcomplicate the narrative and lose you, and this one does exactly that.
Sam is a genuinely intriguing MC, beyond the presented premise of her superpowered android-ness. She's also really likeable and not a dum dum, with clear quirks that seperate her from everyone else and with the potential to become even more in the future.
Other characters have their own clear voices so it doesnt fall into the trap of one dimensional set pieces solely for the story to move along and they don't rely on the MC to be a living creature in the setting! Oh and the settings a great take on the super hero theme, with well developed history that isnt just dropped on your head randomly in big chunks so it feels like you're learning along naturally with Sam which feels great.
I really hope you continue with this story author, and I recommend it highly to whoever reads this.

The story has only started and I haven't even caught up to the latest page yet, but I can tell this is a great start.  I've seen nothing likely to offend readers, it is suitable for all ages so far, and there is a little bit of mystery and anticipation building over exactly how "artificial" the main character's identity really is, and how it will be when they have heroic intentions leading them to be genuine in their development.  That is the closest I come to spoilers.  I am hoping for a bit of action eventually, which is hinted at, but regardless this is totally cool and well written at its start.  I hope to update this later when I've read more and the story nears completion.

Not even sure why this needs the MC to be an android. Aside from not needing to sleep and a video recorder in her head there really isn't anything that sets her apart from a regular teenage girl. She does not learn or adapt quickly. If anything her android lack of creativity makes her worse then average at how to approach things. It's not a bad read so far but its all kind of just underwhelming so far
