- NagulanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0“Flame” begins with a quietly emotional premise: a man facing the end of his life and a woman wrestling with dreams she never chased. The plot is personal, intimate, and slower-paced than mainstream drama, but that’s where its strength lies. The story does a respectable job of exploring human connection under pressure, particularly how two people from different worlds are forced to confront their vulnerabilities together. The author handles the subject of terminal illness with care, steering clear of melodrama, which is refreshing. However, the pacing does stumble at times, especially in early chapters, where scenes occasionally feel either too abrupt or stretched thinner than necessary. A bit more buildup around Isa’s internal conflict would deepen the emotional payoff.
The characters are written with clear emotional goals, though secondary characters could use more presence to enrich the world beyond Chris and Isa. Dialogue is natural, but occasionally the tone shifts too quickly, which may momentarily break immersion. Grammar-wise, the prose is quite clean — there are minor hiccups, but nothing distracting. Stylistically, the writing leans toward plain but effective, fitting for the story’s heavy themes, although some stronger descriptive language could elevate scenes even more.
Overall, “Flame” has the bones of an emotionally engaging and deeply human story. It could benefit from richer pacing and more attention to character depth, but it’s a promising foundation for readers who prefer character-driven drama over plot-heavy action.
