I'll keep it brief. Outside of applying the most stringent nitpicks, this read was overall one that did keep me invested from the beginning. The character descriptions are light, but descriptive enough that you still get a pretty strong form of the characters in mind outside of looking at the cover art. Their interactions are also very well written, the dialogue beats that accompany them are not too long or too short, nor too numerous or too few, they are just right to add necessary movement and action in-between lines of dialogue.
Speaking of, most of the descriptions, particularly those referring to scenes where the creature does initially release its cloud of poison, or later the effects of the poison with Kai at the table or in bed, the pain inflicted on the characters, its effects, are well-written, they help you understand exactly what they're feeling.
This descriptive aptitude also applies to the environment, while it wasn't needed, there is attention in giving the town its own shape without being too intense on details. It helps the feeling of these two moving through an actual and real town. It may just be me though, but I appreciated them.
As for perhaps the only thing that did stick out as a minor negative, was the lack of regard the government officials gave, and even the joy they had in finding the dead bodies and recording of the beast. Perhaps it is due to my own bias about the stereotypical "the government doesn't care," but I feel like a bit more humanity could of been used, that while the scientist did express joy at the new discovery found on the camcorder, it wouldn't of been an insidious smile that crossed their face, but rather a hesitant smirk, as while they did discover a new species of Vita Carnis, people had to die. That is just me and my opinion.
Overall, I'm giving a high rating because this was just fun to read. It was nice to sit down and just go through this story dedicated to what Darian Quilloy has made. For whatever comes next, I wi
