Description
The only way to level up... is to get likes. After four years working as a magical girl, Adah is a certified nobody. In a system where popularity equals power, she’s unknown and underleveled. All she’s got to show for her effort is one pea-shooter spell and a pig mascot who talks too much for his own good. She spends her days hunting pipsqueak monsters and her nights scrolling through the social media feeds of other girls living out her dreams of stardom. Forget saving the world, she’s not even sure she can save her career. That is, until her public meltdown goes viral. Suddenly, people love the unfiltered, foul-mouthed version of her. After rebranding as the dark magical girl Twilight Heartbreak, her popularity skyrockets—bringing with it new spells, new fans, and new threats. Thrust into the spotlight, she finds herself on the front lines of a war against soul-reaping monsters and in the middle of a cutthroat industry full of personalities that might be even more dangerous. Interesting viewpoint of a planetary invasion being met with infighting resistance instead of a unified front, 3d characters, magic system based on showbiz, slowly rising tide of threat from the evil side, which will eventually have to be faced, hints of yuri… very well done. You’ll be cheering for the characters as much as their fans will be.
- GhottyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love this to death. I don't know why anybody hasn't made an idol drama with magical girls before but good God does it work beautifully. It's hard to pin exactly what it is I love about it to be honest, it just... Works for me. It's cozy and I can't help but find myself ridiculously invested.
- Ice DiceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love this story. The setting and magic system feel unique while making perfect sense for magical girls. I have very little I could say that is negative though a few of my more major nitpicks are the treatment of mascots and the monsters (called curliters) in this world. I thinkg my concern with the mascots is more wortying so starting there all mascots are supposed to creatures with their own thoughts and desires but most don't show up to say anything making their extaince more informed detal that happens to corsponeded to their magical girls thought thiings have been getting a little better latlly. The Curlites lack any form of comucation so they will never be more than a "monster of the week" until the very end if I had to guess but due to popularty being tied intrscaty to magic we still get rivlas and villans from the human charctes and theorticaly the mascots eventually but as I stated before they are or less a backround element curently. Otherwise I love the characters and story to bits and plan to stick around to the end.
- VonFluffertonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An excellent story focusing on how magical girls in its world wage war both on the battlefield against monsters, and in the boardroom against those who would see them fade into obscurity. A genuinely amazing story that captures a very difficult subject quite well, with the action scenes having excellent tension and a wonderful sense for what’s happening, and the more calm downtime sections doing a phenomenal job showing you the characters as people, with their rough edges and stand-out traits highlighted without being in your face about it. While it’s probably not a story for everyone, not everyone likes stories that are lighter on the action, it’s one that I think anyone who is a fan of the magical girl genre should give an honest shot at!
- Zachary SchillingerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was looking for something light when I picked this up. It was definitely heavier themes than I expected but it still kept me invested and we get some CGCT out of it, though that mostly comes a bit later. There are definitely some mysteries to be uncovered in this story. I'm looking forward to what happens next.
- NelseumRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I always find stories linked to popularity interesting, and to be fair I think this one in particular is very good so far. Why ?
- The take on magical girls and magical girl industry make sense and is fun to read.
- I like the MC, we dont know much about her right now but the way she think and act feels real, she's instinctive and like the writer says, people love following a winning underdog.
- I will not talk about the other character, early as it is we dont know much yet, but the "rivals" are interresting and i have a soft spot to the other team member.
All and all a very fun read, cant wait for monday. - QueenInRagsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, when I pick up a fiction such as this one, I tend to expect a rather overdone punch to the gut, that really teeters between just the right amount of anxt and wayyy too much. And honestly, I may be leaning too much into my deep seeded craving for melancholy and sad emotion, but this fix was a bit lightly seasoned for me with regards to sadge elements. This is one of the few cases where I feel a fic could have actually been better had it leaned more into edginess ( usually fics really gotta tone it down)
I guess I just got used to magical girl fics hitting the depression gas hard and fast.
Overall this was a fairly competent take on the magical girl genre. Taking some interesting elements from other fictions and meshing them together for a fun ride.
Personally is it my jam ? No but its still fairly good for those who may enjoy the first few chapters.
Good job author ! - SilereVitamRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It was a very well thought out world, good characters, and interesting set of plots. I still have some big questions on the world and how it works, but I believe the author will deliver a good answer at the right time. The characters have their flaws and are believable, and there were a couple twists i didn't see coming.
- MixuniteRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Really enjoyable story. There are a few times where I did not like the direction certain plot threads took, but still, it remains very solid even if I consider certain things wasted potential.
There are some tropes I personally find stupid. The main team is composed of adults who have been working for multiple years, yet they complain like 12 year olds in some scenes. If you watch anime you know what I'm talking about.
Soo, I guess this counts as style?
The characters are decent. Not really explored in depth yet. Honestly I feel like they get built up as the plot goes. I mean that new traits and problems seem to get invented as the story goes on. The characters' psychology isn't a story focus, which I get, but I would prefer complex characters that are more built up from the start.
Story. What to say here? It honestly feels like a better version of an anime storyline. The odd mentor training arc. Challenging the other arrogant team. All of those have nice subversions and are much better executed compared to most anime(yay tropes got good writing)
Anyway good story. Despite any minor critiques I might have, it is an enjoyable read, one that I plan to follow as I am invested now :) . - NiktukuRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.59/10
Slow build, rough beginning that evolved into impactful and methodical plot development. A solid Magical Girl story with purposeful direction, good combat, good politic and geopolitics to sell the complexity of superheroing without compromising on the fun factor.
If you have questions for the first 25 chapters, keep going - I promise you Eri will delivers. One of the top 5 Magical Girl stories on Royal Road for me. Reminds me of The Years of Apocalypse in how deliberate and well-planned the plot development is, but it does suffers in style.
Style: Very good. It's not bold, but done well and gets flashy when it needs without overstepping; unlike certain other Magical Girl stories, Eri knows when to take a step back. However, we got many competitions lately, and this story is the weaker one in term of style so far. I am highly critical of styles for they can make or break MG stories, thus I cannot give it a higher score.
Story: At first, I was worried it may be a bit aimless, but once you get into the 'tournament arc' with DreamRise it hit it stride. Every events after seems to have a purpose and achieves what they needs to, giving you a glimpse into how the world reacts to Magical Girls and the situations with the Cruelties. I do have issues with how little we understand from the public's perspective, save for the fan chats, but that is something I'm sure it will be included more later. Solid score for now.
The big issue is honestly the brief amount of actual terrain and costume descriptions for earlier chapters, but once you hit chapter 60, it should all be much clearer.
Grammar: Few issues, though none that is too glaring.
Character: The most important aspect of any Magical Girl story. Adah is a good protagonist with tons of room to grow, especially her anger issue and growing leadership that needs careful training and motivation for growth.
I knock the score down due to lackluster introduction for the 4 main magical girls and their characterization, especiall
