Description

Lea dreamed of leaving her home in Petalburg and going on an adventure. She wanted to see everything the world had to offer, overcome the hardest trials Hoenn could throw at her, and stand at the top among friends, rivals, and peers. She wanted a team of Pokemon that could stand against all of that, and she's wanted that for years. She wanted to go on a journey. Her dream has been on hold for two years. Lea has worked her ass off to help her sister keep their departed Mother's bakery afloat, and the store was starting to feel like a prison cell, from which there was no escape. Her best friend was getting ready to leave home on her own journey, and despite being happy for her, the coming shared birthday felt like a nightmare made real, of a dream being lost for good. Lea's sister decided to give her the best birthday present she could, and fired her, effective immediately. Pokemon Journey fic set in Hoenn following an Original character, if that wasn't already abundantly obvious. Story loosely inspired by I Will Touch the Sky Story has been posted to FFN as well, and I am currently in the process of posting to Archive of our own.(Current arc is subject to weird scheduling due to word inflation) Consider joining the discord -Here, Have a Cookie Discord

There are a rare amount of stories that tend to get me genuinely excited to read. They give me the jitters and a chill may run down my spine. I happily binge the story to the detriment of my sleep.
This is definitely one of them. Hoenn is by far my favorite region, and the team is uniquely interesting. If you like Pokemon fanfics that have good structure and prose, this is an easy pick. I tend to experience two types of stories: one that is good, but puts this type of mental strain due to awkward flow or writing, and one that is good, but is perfectly fine. Lines flow well into each other. This is definitely the latter. I should try to figure out why that happens in a more concise way, but that's just how I feel reading this.
Now, to be more detailed in my review:
Style: is good as per my above writings.
Story: I'm biased towards it positively. I just love Hoenn. This looks to be a more realistic interpretation of the game. Always happy to see that.
Grammar is good. I tend to be lenient with this one, because it's usually terrible, good enough, or great. I'd say of those three, it's around a 30-60-10 split in general for Pokemon fanfics. This is definitely in the 10. I would say to be a bit more cautious with the your and you're, but I'm not going to drop the score over that.
Character: I feel that you're portraying an accurate world and a solid cast of characters. But, what does it for me is the profanity. It sounds odd, but I prefer stories where the author is perfectly fine with actually dropping some curses. No weird, immersion ruining censorship? I'm elated. I have never understood why authors write "sh*t" or "f*ck". It makes no sense. Either blast it or don't write it at all. Find me a published book in a store with either of those two words with asterisks. I can't find any and it makes sense, because it looks god damn goofy.
Back on track, I have difficulty with stories that do angst and other sad pains. I also try to avoid classifying characters as being whi

Great story inspired by IWTTS, characters are great, lea is great protagonist and has her own fair share of troubles. May and wally also add dynamic to cast. Pokemon fights are great, we are also getting some overreaching plot.
Now the bad part is that the pace of the story is slow, I feel it is slower than IWTTS (at least in middle parts). I hope the author increases pace a bit after the current arc.
    Otherwise it is great story.

So, I came into this story due to a recommendation from a friend, and to start, seeing I will touch the skies inspired this had me nervous, as I have gone on record to say that story gets unnecessarily dark at moments, and there was eventually a point where I couldn’t continue with that story (Gengar’s evolution method in that fic is way too far, and in general ghost types are just… far too much in that fic.) No hate towards the creator, they genuinely understood that I was put off by the story when I left the fic, it’s just not a very compatible story with me personally.
However, none of my initial fears were ever realized in this story, and I found this fic to have absolutely none of the hang-ups that IWTTS has. The best way to describe this fic is that it has most of the positive and interesting elements of IWTTS, without the elements that made the former feel over the top and at times, edgy for the sake of it? The characters are wonderfully written, I adore the Pokémon, and while there were sections that were quite dark, they were warned about in a way that ensured I could still understand what happened without feeling like I was missing key information if I avoided reading the chapter in question.
The Pokémon in this story have such rich characterization, and sure, that’s partially because they’re allowed to talk, and be conscious and active participants in conversation, but regardless I was still able to tell how they felt even without words for the most part due to how they were described.
That’s not to say the human characters are bad either, far from it in fact, they get plenty of time to shine as well, and I really appreciate how the core three have been able to develop over time, it’s great to see.
All in all, a wonderful story, that in my eyes, far and away surpasses its inspiration.

This novel does a great job of combining the best elements of an adventure with a fun and exciting story in the pokemon universe. The MC and the many characters she interacts with are impactful and remain relevant throughout the entire story. The author does a great job balancing the adventuring and training side of the story with the more emotional and adapting-to-trauma parts of the story, which make some seemingly insignificant actions have a lot more weight when they're further reflected on.
A core component of the novel revolves around the main character basically getting brain-fried by a powerful psychic type near the start, and quickly evolves into a more interesting and unique pokemon adventure as she deals with her starter team, her trauma from this event throughout many chapters, and the unique insights it allows as she communicates with her pokemon team and even her friends / romantic interests.
The battles are well written and the context behind many 'random' events is revealed later on, making it a well-meshed and interesting story with a nice plotline. I really enjoy the dynamic between the character's different teams, as with the added benefit of understanding their speech, it makes for many funny and lighthearted moments, but also gives the pokemon a deeper edge of emotion and weight to some of their thoughts.
The plot is very well written with good grammar and a consistent story, and the struggles that the MC and her traveling companions face make reading interesting, funny, but also exciting when it comes to the more dire struggles they face during a battle or some of the random encounters along the way.
The story is great, and I have read up to the most recent chapter as of this moment. Definitely give it a chance if you like the pokemon genre, or if you want to read about a good journey throughout the pokemon world!

I'd be lying if I said I didn't click on this story for the title and cover image, yet intrigue over what could cookies have with a Pokemon story quickly gave in to surprise that I was actually reading something pretty good!
I would definitely recommend this for people who are fans of fics like Pedestal, IWTTTS and the likes. First-person, which might put some people off but is in my opinion very well implemented, and a cast of Pokemon and characters that are given enough love, more than a lot of other stories give. I haven't read it all, so there's a lot of fic to go, but I'm very satisfied with what I've gotten so far.

This story posts at 6am Pacific, I am not only waking up to read, but going to bed early enough to be well rested at 6am.
Style: Rough start, but everything I would have mentioned has been fixed, and most critically, stayed fixed.
Story: The biggest trap with Pokemon fics is we all already know the story. Beat up the evil team, get blessed by whatever legend, do well at the conference, roll credits. That trap has been handily avoided here, this is Lea's story that happens in Hoenn, not the Hoenn story with the player named Lea. The second biggest trap is avoiding changing the human side of things. Once again easily avoided, a good balance is struck between 'Pokemon are just built different' and 'different world means different science'.
Grammar: Great, I've had no issues.
Character: The strongest part of this story. The characters feel like people, the dialogue has awkward phrases and redundant statements (because it should, that's how people talk), they make silly mistakes, and have real reasons beyond 'then there would be no story' to drive their actions. The mons range from minimally sapient to full sophonts, depending on species, and genuinely contribute instead of just being accessories.

Early days yet, but as far as journeyfics go this one is off to a good start. The world and characters feel believable, the Pokemon and May have their own personality (even if their voices sometimes merge), and the plot is believable so far. Lea is in a similar role to Wally from Emerald and travelling with May. Sometimes the writing feels a bit rushed, but that might be the author trying to bang through all the essential starting elements of a pokemon journey.

I'm enjoying this a lot, granted I'm biased for my love of Mon stories.
Its a first person story, not isekai , which maybe due to the others I've been following has been nice change of pace. Not that Mon isekai aren't also good. Hoen region start and presumably there for a while yet but not exclusively Hoen native mons.
It has a good balance between story, characters and battling with no aspects feeling neglected. Though obviously some chapters focus on one aspect more then the others some times. Both Mons and Humans are developed, some more then others as of chapter 19 but I trust we'll learn more about those that haven't opened up as much as time and chapters allow.
Looking forward a lot to more.

Tldr; very obviously IWTTS inspired but I don't think it's a reskin and the quality mostly keeps up. I highly recommend if you like IWTTS or Pokemon fanfics in general, although it's not an SI fanfic if that's what you're looking for.
The rest of the review is more critical, not because I dislike the fic, but because I like it a lot and really need to get my frustrations out from how invested I am sometimes.
I've already wrote a lot about how I feel in chapter 21's comments, so I guess a few more things I've randomly caught that I have thoughts about.
I enjoy cheering for Lea. The starting story on why she wants to go on an adventure is one I find compelling along with how stuck she feels, and unlike this story's inspiration, I didn't drop it for half a year after reading the first 10 chapters before being convinced to pick it up again because A Journey of My Own's author gushed over it. There are issues with how other characters react to Lea imo, and her Ralts feels less like a child and more like an egotistical adult which feels a bit weird for a starter, but it's not always a bad thing.
Style got hit the worst because the writer relies really heavily on context and voice to let us infer who's speaking in dialogue. It would be okay if it were separate lines of back and forth with maybe 2 people at most, but there are several scenes where there's a real convo, a mental convo, a mental convo written like a real convo, and introspective thoughts, all with up to 4 participants. Not only that, but sometimes the dialogue lines are cut by other characters reacting, and it gets really hard to follow when something happens like
"Stuff said by Lea?" Someone else continued cooking, "More stuff said by Lea."
And for the more plain statements, I legit just let my eyes glaze over both because I genuinely cannot tell if it's Lea or the person speaking or maybe even someone else entire speaking, and trust that it's not too important.
At least so far, the really important scenes h

I've gone down the rabbit hole of pokemon fanfics the past year, and this one has quickly become a favorite up there with I Will Touch the Skies and Borne of Caution. The characters are fun, and I think it's the best fic I've found where the Pokemon are part of the conversation. It's still relatively early in the story, but I look forward to seeing where it goes.
