- fangbjornRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far this has been a fantastic piece of work. Johnathan is an interesting character and it is fun watching his internal struggles and growth throughout.
I've spent several nights now reading instead of sleeping when. I should have and look forward to seeing where this goes in the future. Can't wait to see how this arc ends either. - FictionFanaticalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not Bad, not bad at all. I’ve only read about 20 chapters but it has certainly piqued my interest. The character is a tad bit bland, but that is the only bad thing about this story I can really think about. The progression is really fast, perhaps a bit too fast at some points, but it is a LitRPG so what can you expect.
UPDATE:
It has been exactly 203 chapters since my first review of this story, and I’ve got to say that it has really, really improved. From the overall story and depth of the MC to the action/progression of said character. I especially like the scenes in which the MC develops his runic knowledge and know-how. I am excited to see how the story continues to progress and see how traveling to different circles work. My only concern would be that as the MC travels from one circle to another, that the story gets repetitive. It hasn’t happened yet, and I hope it never does, but this story could easily devolve into ‘Mc defeats circle lord, is transported to circle # 2, amasses more power, MC defeats circle lord # 2, is transported to circle #3, and so on’ So far there is no evidence of that happening, and the story has only gotten better as time has progressed. Here’s to 200 more chapter, and perhaps many more. - TURKY MANRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Bro i need more chapters of this pls
THIS IS PROBLY ONE OF THE MOST ITRESTIN WORLD BULDING STORYS I THINK I HAVE READ GOOD NOVLE MUST REED I WENT INTO THIS BOOK SCEPTICAL BUT GODDAM IS IT GOOD TRUST ME BRO YOU WILL LIKE THIS BOOK I SWARE ON JA - The ChaliceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A pure and simple progression power fantasy, Hellbreaker delivers on just about everything you’d want walking into it. Being summoned and victimized for it, immediately sent to hell, this story starts pretty much perfectly. Hell is treacherous, especially in the beginning, but Jonathon has hellish powers to match, more or less. It seems that the main character’s powers will get progressively broken as he struggles to survive in his path to break hell itself and I am all for it. There’s a lot more to hell though, as Jonathon explores further and meets other damned souls, bringing him a whole new slew of trouble.
Story: The story is solid. Of course, we only get a tidbit of his life before the harrowing journey ensues, the author wastes no time in whipping Jonathan around. There’s a lot of secrets looming on the horizon and powers far above him as he works his way up from the bottom, with maybe a little bit of an advantage. We’re never left bored as there’s danger around every corner and each one makes him stronger. Even during low-level fights, they’re always intense. With so far to go to reach the devil’s doorstep, no matter how fast he improves, there’s always something stronger waiting. I thought the holed up dredges of society dotting the hellscape broke up (or spiced up) the action really well with an interesting world that comes together great with the nature of Jonathon’s quest and new life. It felt like a natural way for hell to be.
Style: Hellbreaker knows what it is and delivers. The LitRPG elements are clear and not overbearing, with a nice, simplistic use of tables that doesn’t kill the immersion and make me stop to scroll around. The pacing goes well with steady progression and different goals popping up as the world opens to us. It felt real fluid to and keep me reading just as fast. Descriptions were well written and never out of place or verbose. The story is gripping and entertaining in a way that kept me turning pages and smiling after each scene.
G - sinoutRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hellbreaker is a portal fantasy LitRPG where the main character of the story, Jonathan, is teleported to a fantasy world by one of its gods. Before he can choose one of the standard classes, the god gives him a class that is significantly superior to all the others. However, a little later on, one of the god’s brothers kills Jonathan, and he finds himself trapped in the Infinite Hells, this world’s version of Hell. To get out of this place, he now has to descend through the circles of hell, eliminating each one’s guardian, and then defeat the Devil himself in the very center. And so Jonathan’s exciting adventures begin!
This book has everything that one would expect from a good LitRPG: plenty of action, fights with monsters, character progression through gaining XP and leveling up, diverse skills and abilities, and whatnot. The story overall is pretty dark but not without sprinkles of humor woven throughout. The story is quick-paced—after a short prologue, the focus shifts to Jonathan, and the main events immediately begin to unfold. The story grabbed my attention immediately, making me flip the pages quickly. The story is fast-paced, with vivid depictions of the hellworld and its monstrous inhabitants, effectively bringing this world to life in the reader's imagination. The book is well-written, showcasing good grammar throughout—no complaints in that regard whatsoever.
The first several chapters that I have read so far really piqued my interest, leaving me eager to dive back into the story. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who relishes well-crafted, action-packed portal fantasy LitRPG. - Hannibal ForgeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall Score—5/5 Stars
Hellbreaker is a straight forward and direct journey into the deepest abyss of one man's sheer stubborn resolve in the face of unimaginable hardship. Our hero, Jonathan, has managed to not only be isekai'd—but simultaneously murdered upon 'spawn', as well. Cast down to Hell by a vicious God, he is forced to survive in a multi-layered nightmare of reality where everything wants to murder him. In essence, he's sent to Australia on steroids. Jonathan must navigate demons, danger, and a landscape that wants to kill him while seeking the completion of his ultimate objective: to kill the Devil himself. I found myself enjoying Hellbreaker, though it isn't what I'd call a breakthrough in literary genius. I have some few reservations, but none are enough to really warrant a star reduction. Its premise is uncomplicated, straightforward, and simple—and as I have said in past reviews, there is beauty in simplicity. Hellbreaker embodies this to the letter. It is a joyous, vicious, masculine ride-along for one man's crusade to punch Hell itself square in the jiggly bits, and I, personally, loved it.
Style Score—4.5/5 Stars
Hellbreaker loses half a star here simply because the System style bothers me, personally, due to its use of strictly improper grammar and simplistic formatting. There isn't enough to differentiate it from the remainder of the text, and the ratio use of colons ([Name]:[Description] instead of [Name]: [Description) bothers me deeply. This is a personal thing, of course, but one I can't help but feel I am not alone in nit-picking—and I am nothing if not self-destructively honest in my reviews. DabossUnberogen has genuinely crafted a world I can invest myself in, and other than this one but prominent recurring issue, I can safely say that his style of writing is exactly up my alley. He focuses on punching things in the face, and that's just fine by me.
Grammar Score—5/5
Given that my only nit-pick about grammar is an intentional stylistic c - Daoist Whispering WillowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like the grimdark elements!
They are done well, and normally, I do not enjoy LitRPG. However, it's done in a way that is enjoyable!
I hope to see the story progress! The fast growth is very impressive and not unwarranted. Explore the depth of the character a bit and the story will go even further.
Keep it going! - VVVVVVRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Hellbreaker is a progression fantasy set in hell. Through the story, our OP MC cracks a few bones and discovers a system with more personality and facets than you might think from the first few chapters. I haven't gotten that far but the author has shown that there's enough material for the story to not fall off and become bland.
Hellbreaker lives off its “hell-yeah” moments and systems to draw in the reader, and the story is well-written.
Relationships, emotional arcs, and character depth; the story is not interested in those things, which is not an issue since that’s not what this story is about. The MC backstory is barely there and the side characters are lucky to have more than a short description and two lines of dialogue. In my personal opinion what I would want to see is that the story leans heavier into its themes. Have the MC be more metal. Dare to be even more splatterpunk and carry that punk energy.
From what I’ve read Hellbreaker has a lot of potential, and it did get better the future in I got. I think the ideas presented can lead up to something cool, and interdimensional hell has a lot of potential as a setting. - RednyteRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5If you've already read the synopsis, you know what you're in for. A brutal, violent, and punchy tale of revenge against the gods and breaking hell.
Definitely worth a read if that sounds at all interesting to you. The action is nonstop, relatively well written, and although some readers find the MC to be OP I don't personally feel that's the case. At least, not to a degree notably above the genre average. - PoogabonriferRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0To begin with, I am about halfway through the Kindle release of the first book, and already purchased the second. This review may come off as mildly scathing, but it's really meant to be a series of suggestions for improvement to the author. I bought his books and intend to read both of them, as long as things don't spiral downhill much more than they have, but I'll start my review with what I like. There will be spoilers ahead (mostly in the cons section), so read with caution. Also, I typed this out on my phone, so I apologize for any typos.
PROS:
1) The author clearly knows how to write. He has good grammar, can write dialogue well despite most of the book being from an internal first person perspective. The pacing of fights is well done, though not always well thought out. Overall, the readability of the story is pretty good.
2) Pacing is maybe not the best for how the story should go but it is well done for how the storey does go. The MC doesn't immediately jump to level ludicrous, nor does he remain super low level forever. Despite being fairly OP, the author has not really intentionally held the MC back in ways that are super obvious or contrived (one of my pet peeves).
3) The MC's internal thought process is well written. Even when I think the character could be written differently or better in terms of what they actually think, the words flow well and don't seem too robotic or overly eloquent like I've noticed in many other stories. It seems like the author is writing the words themself without overly relying on Grammarly or something like ChatGPT.
4) The first third of book 1 is phenomenal! We get a MC who is prone to excessive introspection. He gets into his vehicle accident because of this and almost dies multiple times because of this. But it's one of the core traits of the character and he sticks with it, and writes it well for a while, until he doesn't. The cons part of this will be immediately below.
CONS:
1) The MC is initially introduced as a very
