Description
“Stole a staff? Me? Pfft. No. This is… uh, family heirloom. Passed down. Very magical. Very legal.”Meet Vaelira. Ice mage. Adventurer. Definitely didn’t steal her master’s staff. (Okay, maybe she did. But she had reasons.)
She left home to prove herself—and maybe freeze a few things on purpose. So far? She’s frozen her boots to the ground, scared off a rabbit with an ice spike, and gotten kicked out of at least one village.
But every misfire is a lesson. Every awkward success is a win. And with a sarcastic ranger at her side and a dream too big to abandon,
Vaelira is determined to become the great mage she swears she is. One spell at a time. Preferably without freezing anyone else.
The Heart of the Northwindseries blends fantasy comedy with old-school adventure — messy spells, stubborn heroes, and just enough sword & sorcery to keep things exciting.

- YokemRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dear Author,
Reading novels like this is the reason one reads stories on these sites at all. No annoying systems in sight, no cliche characters, or giant loopholes. I have literally no complaints, and I tend to write critical reviews more often than not.
Thank you for publicizing it.
With best regards,
Yokem - mila anemoiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is absolutely refreshing! As a voluntary beta reader, I've had the privilege of exploring the world Miyokari built. And it's been such an enjoyable experience.
When there are so many dark, heavy, and grim stories, Heart of the Northwind gives you levity with absolutely just as much heart. Vaelira is such a perfectly imperfect character - she makes me cheer for her but also groan at her bravado. And I absolutely admire her for that. Some may think she gets on her own way to achieving what she wants. But Vaelira sets out to prove the status quo isn't always the only way.
The banter is seriously awesome and the unique magic system leaves room for wonder and surprise.
This is a refreshing and engaging story about camaraderie, determination, faith in yourself, and the promise of adventure. - Nestor1079Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Narrative style: For me, the narrative style was a little hard to immerse myself in. What did the towns look like? What do the forests look like? What did her homeland look like? The place she lived at? The place she studied at? She's an ice elf, does she get cold? What was her home life like before she snatched and ran? It was difficult for me to immerse myself in the story without knowing what the world looked like.
It's also difficult to really get an intuitive grasp on how much time has passed between thrilling adventures. Perhaps a “It had been a week since their encounter with the necromancer...” or phrases like that to help establish a timeline would work.
Grammar: Zero proofreading noticed! Fantastic.
Characters: The characters could use some polish. Or lack of it, actually. It's hard to pick out unique character quirks between them, and that makes it difficult to differentiate between them unless I see their names in the text. The banter is fantastic, but some abrasiveness would help. It’s also hard to pick up on individual motivations.
Overall, the story is worth being read, and worth being shared so that others can read it. I don't typically follow stories on RR, but I'll be following this one. Keep up the good work. - ViolentViolet41Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Pretty good so far, a couple mistakes here or there but nothing egregious. The characters seem pretty well done, and the world so far is good. We haven't seen too much, but it's still early days, and the main character isn't big on the lore so that feels right. Overall a nice little story!
