Description
In "Grimoires & Gunsmoke", fantasy collides with the modern world in an epic struggle for power and survival. An emperor born from divinity and a dragon, holds aspirations for his own ascension into godhood. In a twisted act of ambition, the emperor orchestrates a deceitful pact with a devil, setting in motion a quest to harness unclaimed souls from another realm. His pathway to divine ascent takes an unexpected turn when a rift opens up in Ohio, bringing him face-to-face with a resilient human community unprepared to bow to a new deity.
As magic clashes with machinery in the skies and fields of Ohio, alliances are tested, friendships forged, and the true cost of ambition laid bare. Witness a battle where the fate of worlds hangs in the balance.
Will the emperor's ruthless quest for power triumph, or will the unrelenting machines of humanity prevail?

I love how the author touched on every dimension of battle, from the air battle, to the ground forces to even the enemy side. This has got to be one of the best stories I've ever read because I haven't been hooked this hard since reading mushoku tensei. Overall, phenomenal work and please keep it up!
- Badger-writingstuffRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Pretty solid and enjoyable story
Great characters though grammar is a little rough in places. Though it's not enough to ruin the enjoyment and despite the grittiness it has some great comedy elements, can not wait to see more from this story and to see where it ends up going. - DougheyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Ohio Incident Arc was really great, with the multiple POVs, and the description of the battles, especially the air battle between the Magicverse's air units versus the USAF and Air NatGuard was incredible. The worldbuilding of the other side was awesome, setting up not just the view of the otherworlders about Earth, but also their motives, capabilities and characters. Then, the Battle of Ohio ends, and suddenly things hit like a concrete wall as the action ends to give way for the more detailed worldbuilding, it's quite a bit disorienting, especially with the introduction of Yana. But then the build-up skyrockets, with Article 5 being triggered, the exposition about Emperor Varian's plan and actions, and then boom, Operation Tolkien hath begun.
Now, I won't say much about Op Tolkien as it isn't finished yet, but I am enjoying the current tone and pace of the story, but it felt kind of too little happens, but, here's hoping it ramps up into something crazy.
Overall, 5/5 for me, if I lost my memories of reading this, I would be destined to read this again. - GohakenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this so far, not too heavy and not too light —it’s just right :-) There are some proofreading issues but I don’t really care about that; I’m here for a character driven, fun-filled and fast-paced action adventure with plenty of “Ha ha!” moments… not to be an editor.
- IdeonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0What if the premise of the GATE light novels wasn't completely wasted in jingoism, anime cliches and nerfing the f*ck out of the magic side? You would get something like this story. This time, its an even fight.
Magic is appropriately scary and mysterious for the Earth side, as it should be, while sometimes it can pale in comparison to sustained artilery and machinegun fire, its not by much all things considered, but magic has many strategic means that were not fully realised becouse of an initial arrogance, what im saying is that magic is a real threat in this novel, unlike in GATE.
It doesn't mean magic is all powerful and unstopable, there are limits to what a single mage can do, and just becouse magic can probably do just about anything, it doesn't mean the wizards know how to do it.
Earth's strenght is in its organization and the sheer strenght of their weapons, while its not as esoteric as magic is, the magical side is still unnerved by what they can achieve with their technology, things like radar, faster than sound aircraft and satelite reconnaissance makes their skin crawl. Also missiles. Lots and lots of missiles.
The main draw of the story for me is that this is an actual war, there's back and foward in the fighting, alliances and strategies, neither side is properly "Curbstomped", while Earth does repel the initial invading forces (kind of), it doesn't mean it was easy, neither side was prepared for the other.
That said, please, do try to endure the initial Fairy chapters, personally i think she belongs in a blender, but on the recent chapters it seems like her attitude will get toned down periodically, and since the rest of the story is so well writen, who knows? Maybe i will end up liking her the best by the end of the story. - KaywyeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Anyone who has ever served in the military will connect with this story. I will say I was nervous when I saw the concept for this story. Having served in the military myself, I was worried that the portrayals and interactions would be...inaccurate. I needn't have worried. The author has either served, or done some serious research to come up with authentic feeling military relationships, and I for one, am here for it. Good writing, good characters, good humor. Give it a shot. Or a fairie will bonk you on the head and call you rude. Lol
- RJVeilRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the best science vs fantasy stories I've read, the characters, humor and writing are all excellent, the only inaccurate thing in the story is the kobolds + goblins living in the sewers..... Sewer systes, specially the ones beneath large cities are extremely dangerous places for multiple reasons including toxic and corrosive gases, lack of oxygen and diseases (and there's also the problem of only a few tunnels being large enough to walk through).
- RactusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Did you watch the "Gate" anime and thought "I wonder what would happen if it opened up in America instead"? Have you seen the launch trailer for the game "Kingmakers" and though it was cool?
If you answered Yes then you should definitely read this story, if for some reason you answered No, then go ahead and read it anyway because it's just that good! - TheGun2514Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love the series so far, especially the banter between the special forces soldiers. The world building is great and the characters are interesting and have a lot of depth, even the characters that are only around for a chapter or so. Keep it up can’t wait to see where the series goes.
- highblast21Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Similar pretext as that one anime called Gate: JSDF fought here. But in contrast to that japanese hentai degenerate clusterfuck, here we're seeing it in the America Fuck yeah perspective. Less hentai, same degenerate clusterfuck plus the usual military dark humor we all know and meme. Another constrast is that the invading otherworlders are actually competent. The issue of Modern Weaponry vs Fantasy Bullshit is more or less even, with earth having a slight edge in efficiency, accuracy and coordination.
A bit of parallel to Gate is that one of the major characters is SOF, green beret to be exact, so we got to see some recon elements plus knowing berets, economic distabilization is gonna be at play. Cloak and dagger shenanigans. Though political maneuvering from both sides is still shown here and there so we as readers are abreast with the macro side of things.
Speaking of characters, author clearly is either a former military servicemen or did an extremely detailed research on the military. We get to read terms and knowledge privy only to those who are either military studs or military nerds. I'm not from the military so I can't be 100% sure if the terms and knowledge are accurate, but it does add a certain level of immersion. But you can bet they kick elven ass.
Story is constructed in a 3rd person narrative style but has done more show than tell, so gruesome scenes are abundant and dipictions of rape and other mature things are all on the table.
All in all a surprising yet delectable experience. If you want to see modern weapons vs fantasy fight but got bored watching the fantasy get curbstomped into oblivion and want a more even fight, at least until earth humans inevitably figure a way to curbstomp the opposition, you got yourselves a treat. 10 out 10 will shoot again!
