The story takes most of the cast from the Immortal Stonekeeper book and runs through a new case at a fast pace. In just a few chapters, they have been knocked around and the focus narrows. In a rather whirlwind of events that act as the opening, it becomes clear that there is more than one side at work here. The story is interesting, but there are a lot of elements and not enough description and space to really settle into each revelation. Jonathan's confusion becomes the reader's confusion - and the effect holds for a significant part of the book, but whether or not it is a good thing I leave to others.
It is possible to put together the pieces and solve the mystery before it all comes out in the conclusion, yet the motivations and identity of the players all come together in a bit of a clash simply because the POV is limited. The ending itself is fine and thankfully not rushed. It was an interesting story which would never have worked without having read Immortal Stonekeeper. With that being said, this fast-paced fantasy mystery novella does work, but enough of the focus is on the handful of set locations that it doesn't traditionally 'urban fantasy'. The story can get a bit messy in spots, but it finds itself in the last third!
