- Detrius VimesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So good. I'm at chapter 10 and I love it so far. Starts a tad slow but it really picks up
- Futhark the ElderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Until now, I’ve had two favourite stories on RRL, stories I check daily for updates: Arcane Emperor and the splendidly-named Randidly Ghosthound.
Now I have three favourites. As original and well-crafted as my two favourites above are, just so original and well-crafted is Endless Online. What a pleasure to read!
The protagonist has a satisfactorily strong character, and is driven by the most important moral imperative for men: Defend those you care about. This remains the consistent theme throughout. Those who studied undergraduate writing courses often have their heads filled with drivel about ‘character development’. Well, when a character is based on traditional virtues such as loyalty, honesty, and the moral imperative mentioned above, then that character needs no development. So any critic blathering on about a lack of character development in the story would be far off the mark. Character consistency is much more important, and we have that throughout.
While the story is based on the familiar formula of an MC who ends up in a gamelike world, the details are novel and the magic system different from any I’ve seen before. This system even allows for swords and sorcery to co-exist with spaceships and laser weapons. Brilliantly done!
One can only hope that the story continues beyond the first two books. My compliments to the author. - InsignificantRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly this might as well have been a published book. Everything that makes up this book has been perhaps the greatest read I've had on this site in a very long time. I very much look forward to seeing where this goes from here on.
Definitely worth your time. - MAJmufinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This novel will question your grasp on reality itself!
I highly recommend this novel to any fantasy lovers out there, I have yet to see a fantasy novel take a spin like this. - MutatedRatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This novel is a brilliant gem I am glad to have stumbled upon.
Top-notch storytelling with a unique premise. Unblemished grammar, an insane release pace, and l o n g chapters. Each character contains a differentiable, unique personality.
Give it a go—I guarantee you that this novel will not dissapoint. - isominRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This fiction truely has the potential to become one of the most popular on the site, certainly after a bunch more chapters are released and it attracts the attention of the binge-readers.
So far the story has managed to pay incredible attention to detail, as well as moving at a pace that would satisfy most readers. Some may find certain sections too drawn out which can be excrutiating for a novel that is released chapter by chapter, but most should be satisfied.
The characters so far have been likeable (or if their character is meant to add some conflict, the perfect mix of a cautious asshole who is only looking after their friends) and all contain that essential hint that there is more to them than we see which would make for some fun exposition later.
So far, it has been really enjoyable and I hope this continues. - FalseLuckRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Really good story, I suggest you read to at least chapter 12.
I ended up dropping it because the character interactions really bothered me. - MattajRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I will be honest, after reading the first couple chapters I wanted to drop this story due not being to my taste but I couldn't. It was simply to good, too much of addiction that made you want to read more. Sometimes I enjoyed it, sometimes I hated it.
I finished first book and a little bit more than 10 chapters in book 2 and I must say that this is a pretty good story. Fairly dark but not too much. It feels like it gets lighter in second book but I am not sure how it will end. Characters and the world are pretty good, believable and some aspects of world building explains different things that occur in other stories like how technology usually cannot exist together with magic which is pretty interesting. And good grammar to top it all produces a good book that may be enjoyed by many.
Long chapters mean lots of time required to read which on daily basis I do not posess so I decided to be happy with what I read and give my thanks to author but I am sorry that I will not follow this story as it develops. I wish you (author) the best of luck and for all the readers, have fun! - trollfullRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Thoroughly enjoyed it. Took me a few chapters to really get into it, but it has great imagery and is cleverly written
- KenodoxiaRoyal Road★ 0.5Don't let the reviews fool you.
Firs of all, what is with the characters. They don't grow. They have been with each other for the past however long and fought together. Val saved them on many occasions. They are utterly one dimensional. The captain and the bog soldier does not have any personality. Gregor is just a dick for being a dick's sake. The elf or highlord is dry as a cardboard.
And Val. He's such an awkwardly written character. He feels really fake. The writer is trying to portray him as this broken badass. But the writer fall short. His actions does not show his motivation. It's like a really bad over the top, campy actor trying but failing to play a young broken soldier. And I think the writer knows this, and tries to compensate by writing this long, disjointed and awkward inner dialogue.
And don't get me started on the flashbacks. There has to be rule somewhere that you can't have this many flashbacks in that size story or something. What the hell. Flashbacks don't make your character more rich. Not in this amount. It's like there's a convenient flashback that somehow ties into every chapter.
That lead me to the chapters. They contain too much useless information. We, the readers, can understand or relate to the characters in a given situation. You aren't supposed to write everything. We can surmise that what someone is thinking or feeling from the given dialogue or his actions. You don't have to spell out every little detail. Don't pander to us. The readers aren't stupid.
The paragraphs are too long. It's almost like the writer is aiming for a word count. Like he's deliberately trying to make the sentence or paragraph longer.
And, the rpg mechanics seem like they were added in after the fact. There are no consistency with the exp gain. If it were removed, it wouldn't matter. And I feel, it should be removed because it does not have any bearing on the character or the plot.
Overall, this fiction needs a major rewrite.
I would give it a 2 out of 5 for now
