Description
In the eyes of the Sorcerer’s Guild, Inerys’ blood has been corrupted since birth. Born of mixed blood, she has two choices in life: toil away as a second-class citizen in one of the seven city-states or carve out a fringe life gathering precious materials for the Guild alongside her fellow hounds. For her kind, life is short and often met with a brutal end. Though for her younger brother, it doesn’t have to be. For him and what remains of her family, she risks life and limb hunting a forest few dare to enter. When desperation drives her deeper into the dangers of the Endari Wilds, she encounters an otherworldly force her mortal mind can scarcely comprehend. Her brush with death leaves her forever changed with a deep, ancient hunger she can barely control and a soul that threatens to tear her body apart from the inside.

- Scott W JamesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m really enjoying the story so far. It’s an interesting take on a cultivation/progression fantasy story with its own unique twist that makes me want to read more.
The story begins in chapter one with what feels like a prologue with a different character that focuses on worldbuilding. My only struggle in that part was that there was a lot of lore being thrown all at once that I had a hard time remembering. But once I reached chapter 2, I became fully immersed in the story as I met the protagonist.
The main character Inerys is engaging and captivating from her introduction onwards. Immediately she becomes sympathetic and someone you want to root for as an, if you’ll excuse the pun, underdog. She’s a hunter who struggles to provide for herself in an everchanging landscape. A smart, clear-headed character who forms strong relationships with those around her.
The grammar is fine. It is unobtrusive and serves its function well within the prose.
The style weaves between heavy descriptive prose that’s well paced and helps paint a clear picture of every scene to dialogue that is never filler or unnecessary. It all either advances the plot, adds to a character or reveals more interesting tidbits about the setting.
One minute there’s a break neck action scene and then in another there’s a slow but cozy slice of life style scene with likable characters that you want to spend more time with. - SpookyCrabsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am unsure how long I'd have to be reading on this website to be considered "experienced" but I've certainly noticed a theme with the some of the most popular novels, RPG stuff, game stuff. But I've always found the best stuff is original, and creative. This fits both to some extent. Some familiar things, cores and the such, but at least to where I am now, they are of little importance. EON is refreshing in the sense that it's not all action, all climbing to the top. Instead it features its characters to a great extent, and each is fun and unique. Keep up the good work
- D.N.A.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I mean, seriously, this story is highly recommended if you can read it calmly.
Why is that? Because from the very first paragraph, it's clear that this is a Fantasy story... High Fantasy, to be precise, with distinctive elements. It will make you nostalgic for books like Elantris, Rule of Wolves, etc., because the storytelling tone is very characteristic of Classic Fantasy!
At the beginning, you will be presented with an atmospheric scene with misty mountains, deepwoods filled with strange creatures, and an overall sense of wonder. By taking your time, you can appreciate the crafted world-building, from the way the fog lifts above the Breadth to the descriptions of the spider-rooted trees. And worry not, as far as I've read, no Grammar errors (bet author revised this story so many times lol)!
Also, keep in mind that this story is Slow-Burning! Just like other Classic Fantasy books out there.
In the first few chapters, we are presented with a gradual exploration of the setting and characters, revealing details about the protagonists' daily lives, relationships, and struggles in their dangerous world. You can't rush this kind of build-up! You have to savor it, enjoy the rich "Adventure," and also the multiple main characters like Rhydian and Inerys, each with their own lives for you to get to know them deeply.
When you reach the conflict, you're already in tune with the characters; everything will pay off!
But because of "the pay off in the end," perhaps at the beginning you'll be confused by some Terminology and Lore, like detailed names, ranks, and magical words (e.g., Talhavar, Puresoul, rysk, fullsilver), but this is indeed the characteristics of High Fantasy story, isn't it? Not everything should be info-dumped at the beginning, so... sit down, prepare your tea, and read!
As for me, personally, this story feels far, hiiigh above me hhhhhh
//itisacomplimentreally - SM BennettRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall, Empire of Night is a compelling story. It incorporates action, drama and fantasy very well. The dark moments are balanced with lighter touches, and the characters are believable.
The writing style is a pleasure to read. The story flows well. There are no issues with perspective.
The story takes its time. The beginning chapters are mainly set up, which I don’t mind because they are very well written and add to the overall feel of the world and tension. This is a complex world, but the important information comes at a good pace, so it never feels overwhelming. The plot is keeping me on my toes. Just when I think I know the direction it is going, there is a twist I didn’t see coming!
There are no issues with grammar, and the vocabulary is rich and evocative. I am only mildly familiar with Xianxia, so some of the terms were a little confusing, but I could follow along easily enough.
The characters feel fleshed out and are easy to root for. The minor characters are given depth and feel realistic. The dialogue is natural and flows well. Even the wyverns are beautifully written!
Overall, the Xianxia is not a genre I would normally read, but this my type of story! - FoundForesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall:
I’m enjoying the story so far, it is very well-written! Generally, the pacing is a bit slower than I would expect from an action novel. But that’s not a complaint. The action sequences, partially the first one, are very well done and help to build flesh out the world and setting. —5/5
Style:
The prose and style and very consistent and well thought out. The sentence structure is easy to follow and I find the word choice to be engaging, everything flows together in an elegant tapestry. —5/5
Story:
The story is engaging, and the mystery surrounding “The Dark Woods” is intriguing. However, at times the plot feels directionless. As of chapter 5, the main character doesn’t have a clear goal and there are no real stakes. It almost feels like a Slice Of Life, which may not be for everyone.
That being said, it’s early days and I suspect this piece is simply a slow burner so I won’t remove a full point. Great overall but I would like a clearer picture of where the story is going— 4.5/5
Grammar:
I don’t have much to say about the grammar largely because it’s flawless. Don’t think I’ve noticed a single typo or punctuation error—5/5
Character.
Characterization is very well done. Dialogue feels natural and the way charters interact with each other is realistic. Often, you clear idea of who the characters are to one another with out it being spelled out to you which is a telltale sign of excellent writing in my book! —5/5 - MeercatWhisperer112Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Is realistic high-fantasy an oxymoron? Because that's what this story feels like, with real people dealing with less-than-stellar circumstances and with consistent, understandable in-world rules. It's very well written, the world built around us through throwaway comments by the characters or small interactions, rather than large infodumps, and has a good amount of action to boot.
Style: The story is richly descriptive, with dialogue and action peppered throughout to break up the paragraphs. There's not issues with tense changes or 1st/3rd person shifts, and the perspective jumps are natural within the story. So far it's high fantasy, leaning into dark fantasy, with a more serious tone and few jokes.
Story: A lot of high fantasy deals with the hyperbolic: the best, the worst, the most intense. Empire of night starts at the human level, with realistic characters trying to live their lives as plot brews on the sidelines. The worldbuilding is intriguing, adding fresh takes on common tropes, and the magic system clearly has rules and principals without requiring a textbook to be able to keep up.
Grammer: No notes are good notes, and I have very little to say here.
Characters: Inerys is engaging and sympathetic, an oddity in her part of the world but skilled at what she does, practical, and determined to take care of her family. Her love interest is fun, charming without being cliche, and the romance seems like it will be an excellent sub-plot. Rhydian is currently a bit of an everyman - as the head of his unit, and mostly engaged in taking orders so far, he hasn't had much chance to show his own personality. But given the direction things are going, I'm sure we'll get plenty of him soon enough. - MontenegroRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Loving this story so far. The world building is great, from the lore in the prologue to the ever changing landscape that Inerys has to navigate as a hunter. Inerys is a strong, likeable protagonist and is presented in a sympathetic manner. The style is on point, switching between heavy descriptive prose to dialogue without ever feeling forced or filler. There is something for everyone; fast paced action and emotionally engaging, slower slice of life scenes. Grammar wise, there’s not much to say - it’s flawless and unobtrusive; letting the story flow naturally. Overall, I recommend this story and look forward to seeing where the plot goes.
- PizzaPizzaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Alright! Let's get into this review. To summarize it succinctly - it appears to be a dark, even gothic fantasy story about a woman who is turned into a monster by a powerful vampire cultivator.
Style/Story: It's still too early at this point in the story to really talk about the story, because it's all been setup. Through vivid and descriptive pose, the author lays out a world for our main character Inerys that is both dismal and bleak. Gathering materials for sorcerers at the outskirts of society allows her to barely eke out a living, and the work is fraught with danger and bleariness. Until the inciting incident, it felt like a bit of a slice of life story. Then, Inerys's life is quickly and unceremoniously dumped on its head as she's bitten and turned by a vampire while ranging in the woods.
From what I can see thus far, the story is a real standout piece for anyone who's looking for a story about vampire struggles and politics. The 'Sanguine Court' is set up to be a nuanced and multifaceted faction, and I will continue reading on past this review to see what the author does with them.
Grammar: The author is a self-professed obsessive perfectionist, and there's literally nothing I can see wrong here. Kudos!
Characters: For better or for worse, the story does suffer from some early pacing issues because the author puts so much care into character development. The characters are all - and I mean all three-dimensional and fleshed out well. Inerys is also set up to be a darling that you want to root for, and I already see beautiful shades of gray for the characters presented. - Rookie12Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review is based on the six chapters that were available at the time.
The story gives us a hint of what is to come with a very well made action-packed first chapter. Then we are introduced to our main protagonist, Inerys.
Inerys is a lively and goal-driven character, she is a hunter who always tries to find the middle ground when conflict arises in order to avoid violence. But she is far from defenseless and knows a thing or two about how to protect herself. Honestly, she comes across as very likeable in relationships with pretty much everyone.
The supporting cast for now is already extensive and intriguing. From Ruslan, the character from the first chapter, to the other hunters and their conflict with purebloods.
The worldbuilding is interesting. For the time being, most of the events are confined to a few locations, but we can already see glimpses of the outside world and the very well-thought-out magic system.
Curiosity drives the MC to excel, which eventually gets her into trouble. It is a little too hard to tell where the story can go from here because the MC has several routes to choose from, all of which are viable and look interesting, as well as her future conflict with her new nature.
The grammar and style are good, I found no serious mistakes no matter how hard I tried. Excellent job!
All in all, the story is pretty small for now, but I am giving it five stars because it managed to immerse me in this world and because the characters are so well done. - TheRealAlpha2Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0At first I'll admit I wasn't sure I'd be into this one as a Scifi person (who's only just started reading more fantasy because if Isekai mangas), but being new to RR I wanted to give a few authors a fair shot. What I found here was a well written and considered narrative.
(Editing my review for the newlt rewritten chapters) The new start spens a bit more time fleshing out our main character and her world. Once again I'll admite to not being sure about having to read trough this part but once again it grabbed me. It does introduce interesting characters and situations along with refining the main character more. It makes her more endearing and makes you want to see what happens next, especially since the whole story is being given more detail.
