In 1950, a red rupture split the sky open and changed humanity forever. When the rift vanished, nearly sixty percent of the population awakened supernatural abilities. Cities fell, new powers reshaped society, and from that day forward most people manifested their abilities at the age of sixteen. Power became status. Power became survival. Alan Winchester is the son of the world’s top ranked hero, yet when his generation begins awakening, nothing happens to him. With no abilities in a world built around the superhuman, he turns to science and works inside his father’s organization, believing he can still earn his place another way. Then he discovers classified files: illegal experiments, disappearances, and murder cases hidden behind the image of heroism. After a chain of violent events forces him out of everything he knows, Alan travels to China searching for answers, training, and a different path to power. What begins as survival turns into something far more dangerous as he uncovers forces tied to the original catastrophe that changed humanity. Death. Corruption. Revenge. In a world ruled by strength, Alan will carve his own. - JustlazyreaderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I just caught up on the first volume and honestly it feels like a mix between Invincible, DC style heroes, and a bit of The Boys with the corporate side of HeroCorp. The opening Red Bloom event was solid. It throws you straight into chaos and shows how powers changed everything instead of slowly explaining it. I liked seeing different countries reacting because it made the world feel big from the start.Black Mentis is easily the strongest part so far. He comes off like that top tier hero everyone depends on but you can tell he is tired of the system and doesn’t trust HeroCorp at all. The meteor scene was a strong intro because it shows how powerful he is without needing a long explanation. Then switching to Ben as a father and husband makes him feel more real and not just another edgy hero. The HeroCorp stuff is interesting too. The rankings, the fake PR moments, staged fights, and secret experiments give heavy The Boys vibes. The flashback chapters help explain why Mentis hates the system and why he keeps playing along even though he clearly wants to break it. it feels like a darker superhero story with a strong main character and a lot of tension building behind the scenes. I’m curious to see when Mentis finally turns on HeroCorp because it feels like that moment is coming sooner or later. Definitely has potential if the pacing tightens a bit and the conspiracy angle keeps growing.
- CD AcostaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I always like to read a story where the author is passionate about the genre they are writing in, and I can definitely tell this author knows superhero stories and does justice when writing them!
There is a lot to like in the story as there is a good amount of action and the author does a great job of detailing the stakes that the hero must overcome. But also he shows how powerful the hero is, but I like the description of the hero's power and think it is done well.
If you are interested in a superhero story then I think you should definitely try this one! There are not that many of them in RR and this one is a really good one! - A_Shutin_StorytellerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A superhero story always feels good, It hits a sweet spot between a conspiracy thriller and progression fantasy, keeping the stakes personal while the world-building stays massive.
The "Red Rupture" didn't just create a golden age it created HeroCorp, a corporate machine that treats saving lives like a scripted PR stunt. Seeing the world through Alan’s eyes, a "powerless" kid in a world obsessed with rank makes his journey from weak to strong feel earned. It isn't just about getting powers; it’s about navigating a morally grey landscape where the "good guys" are forced to maintain a facade just to survive.
What really stands out is the cinematic atmosphere. The author makes the "awakening era" feel more like a haunting curse than a gift. Characters like Black Mentis add so much depth; he feels less like a shining symbol and more like a tired weapon who has seen the machinery from the inside. The writing is punchy and vivid, stripping away the fluff to focus on brutal fights and the slow reveal of illegal experiments. If you want a superhero story with actual teeth and consequences that stick, you need to be reading this.
Overall a really great read. If you are interested in starting you are definitely not going to regret it. - Jonah BreRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wanna say this is an absolutely great story so far. The first chapter is insanely atmospheric and a really good start. The descriptions are great, and I'm a big fan of Black Mentis. Gravity powers are cool. I also like how this story has a kind of to be hero X vibe to it, with how controlling the media is of everything, even making stuff up. Also has a mix of the boys in there as well. I do feel for Mentis. The story also flows really well. It's easy to keep reading, and personally, I thought the dialogue was really good. This story had a lot of promise, but it does need a tune-up in a couple of places.
Mainly, I believe that the spacing is a little excessive. Each sentence break has three or four spaces between them, which provides a lot of empty space. Cutting the space would do a lot of favors. Outside of that I didn't have any problems reading the story. I will say that it has a slow start after the first chapter. Lots of world-building. That is far from a problem as what is expanded on is absolutely necessary. Overall, I don’t see why this story doesn’t deserve five stars. At least for now. - DaoistWenMingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There is a lot of potential wit this novel, and you can see it especially in the first few chapters! The characters are interesting and unique in their own ways, and the narration is done so well that the reader can't help but be drawn in. Looking forward to how this story develops!
- David360Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Death Punishment: Quest for Vengeance opens with a very cinematic premise. The Red Bloom catastrophe that suddenly gives humanity supernatural powers immediately creates a chaotic and dangerous world, and the first chapters do a good job showing how drastically society changes after that moment. The atmosphere of the opening is intense and almost apocalyptic, which makes the setting feel large and unpredictable.
One of the most interesting aspects of the story is the contrast between the public image of heroes and the darker reality behind the system. The presence of HeroCorp and the hints of corruption add a conspiracy element that gives the story more depth than a traditional superhero narrative.
The action scenes are clearly one of the author’s strengths. Battles involving characters like Black Mentis are described in a cinematic way that makes them easy to visualize and gives the story a strong sense of scale.
At the same time, the narrative also introduces a more personal thread through Alan Winchester. Being the powerless son of the world’s strongest hero creates immediate tension and raises interesting questions about identity, expectation, and revenge.
Overall the story blends superhero action, conspiracy, and progression elements into an ambitious opening arc that promises a much larger conflict still waiting to unfold. - Devil_annaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just finished the opening chapters of Death Punishment Quest for Vengeance and the Red Bloom event in 1950 straight-up gave me chills. That sudden silence dropping over the whole world, the sky ripping open like a bleeding wound, people freezing mid-step while birds drop dead and powers start exploding inside everyone—some gaining insane abilities, others just collapsing—it felt raw and apocalyptic in the best way. The way the author jumps around the globe showing random folks in Paris, Seoul, Cairo, and everywhere else losing their minds (or their lives) really sells how the entire planet changed overnight.
Then we get to Alan Winchester, son of the world's top hero, who hits sixteen and... nothing. No powers at all in a society where strength is literally everything. Watching him try to prove himself through science inside his dad's organization only to stumble on the classified files about illegal experiments, disappearances, and straight-up murders hidden behind the shiny hero PR? That twist hit different. It turns the whole "legacy kid" trope into something dark and personal fast.
The blend of gritty superhero world with revenge, cultivation training in China, and supernatural conspiracy is a fresh mix I haven't seen done exactly like this. Alan's weak-to-strong path feels earned because the corruption runs so deep, and the grimdark vibe (real consequences, no one safe, heroes who aren't heroes) reminds me of The Boys mixed with some classic cultivation revenge arcs. The fights I've seen have weight, the mystery around the original rupture keeps pulling me in, and Alan already feels like a solid anti-hero who's willing to burn everything down for answers.
Writing has a cinematic flow that makes the chaos pop, though a couple spots could use a quick polish on grammar or sentence rhythm. Overall this has serious potential if you like dark superhero stories with conspiracy, brutal progression, and a driven MC carving his own path. Already followed and can't wait t - DimensionalWriter27Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0From the chapters I've read, I can immediately see the inspirations from other deconstructions of superhero media, with corporations being the ones in charge.
The opening is chaotic, throws you immediately into the action with the Red Bloom event, showing when powers were first discovered and the consequences of it all, instead of telling you. With the countries' reactions to it believable enough for me.
Style: Pretty good. The story has some slow moments, but it makes sure to quickly pick itself up before it risks becoming dull.
Story: A heavy focus on mystery and intrigue. Makes the world feel alive, with the story promising a complicated world. It's pretty well-structured.
Grammar: I found it to be good. English isn't my first language, but as I read, I think it flowed well enough from word-to-word.
Characters: The author made them work even though there's clearly a lot of mystery to each of them. The fact that this has multiple leads is a plus in my book. Characters have their own motivations and goals, with them running into conflicts of interest on occasion, causing lots of delicious drama!
Overall, a pretty nice deconstruction of the superhero genre, will keep tabs on it. - CopiousCopiumRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Right off the bat, the story immediately highlights what it does best, and that is to paint a vivid picture of the world it takes place in. A mysterious event took place and in the wake of it superhumans popped up around the world left and right. It's simple, chaotic, and most importantly, intriguing.Furthermore, it serves as a great contrast for the next few chapters as we are introduced to HeroCorp. Where the atmosphere from the first chapter died down a little, becoming more sterile and controlled without losing that tension and danger. And that is in part due to the characters especially Black Mentis, and the circumstances surrounding him.He has a rough and unfriendly disposition, but he has softer side to him as well. As much as he dislikes HeroCorp and the shady operations happening underneath, he knows that being rash would only put those he care about at risk. It raises the stakes and I'm all for it.For the grammar, there's nothing wrong with it. It's short and snappy like a comic book and I personally have no problem with it.Overall, it's a great read and I am interested to see how the rest of the story and the conflict it had set up would unfold.
- LiamsiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Clear revenge-driven superhero progression with a gritty “the system is rotten” vibe and an MC who actually has momentum. The writing moves fast, the stakes stay personal, and the escalation feels earned. I also like that the story doesn’t pretend the hero world is clean or fair, it leans into consequences and the ugly side of power. The setup is easy to get into and it keeps pushing forward instead of stalling. If you like power growth, politics, and payback, this is an easy follow.
