This story is good. Like, really good. It’s got that perfect mix of brutal fights, deep world-building, and characters you either love or love to hate. The whole "Angels are corrupted humans" thing? Super cool. The Sinners being this ragtag group of overpowered misfits? Even cooler.
Style
The writing is sharp and immersive, when angels get sliced up, you feel it. The descriptions of New Order and the Ichor powers are detailed without being overbearing. The fight scenes? Absolute bangers. If you like fast-paced, cinematic action with a dark edge, this delivers.
Story
The plot is a wild ride. You’ve got fallen angels raining from the sky, a dystopian city on the brink, and a group of antiheroes trying to purge the world of its golden-blooded curse. The missions are intense, especially when the Sinners go up against threats like the Hag or Kira Association assassins. The pacing isn’t perfect, some chapters feel like setup, while others are nonstop chaos but when it hits, it hits.
Grammar
No complaints here. The prose is clean, the dialogue flows naturally, and there aren’t any distracting errors. It reads like a professionally edited book, which is always a plus.
Characters
Damien’s growth from clueless newbie to badass Sinner is exciting. His dynamic with Soren (who’s mysterious in the best way) and his rivalry-turned-whatever with Barnett is great. Sumi is terrifying (in a good way), Rita’s the lovable underdog, and Elmer’s the muscle with a heart.
If you’re into dark fantasy with killer fights, deep lore, and a cast of morally grey weirdos, Ichor of the Dawn World is a must-read. - WilliamWireRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Wow, this book is action-packed! Even the training sessions are filled with danger where people can get their limbs cut off and even possibly die. IOTDW is a ruthless world.
The setting is in an apocalyptic sort of world where heaven or “angels” are attacking humanity. The angels aren't good, or at least it appears that they're not, but they definitely hate humanity. The angels are trying to destroy humanity, or at least punish it, because humanity has in it's blood this Ichor (some sort of original sin) and this Ichor gives powers to people sort of like superheroes.
The main character of this story is a young man named Damian. The mentor figure, named Soren, sees potential in him (as you may expect) and takes him to join a team of warriors called The Sinners. And this whole group are sort of like a superhero team with multiple characters with their own personalities and each one manifesting their Ichor in different ways for their own abilities. Damien, who hasn't figured out his own powers yet, must slowly learn to fight and how to use his powers.
The Sinners must deal with the angels. The angels come in many different forms, some of them more like ghouls or like zombies and others more powerful. There's a hierarchy of angels and they'll have names like The Hag or things like that. To me this really gives me the feeling of a superhero team in a dystopian world. Each new enemy ups the stakes, growing in power, with some enemies seemingly invincible.
The writing is solid. It's in Damien ‘s POV, he’s the main character, but there are plenty of different interesting characters he engages with during the story.
The violence in this book is severe; people can have their limbs chopped off, they can be sliced in half, but this is sometimes OK because usually the characters (at least the powered ones) have some sort of regeneration process and we'll come back. But not in all cases, not all humans seem to manifest powers. Nonetheless this is a dark tale f - BeomJunKooRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A post-apocalyptic world of people with heavenly powers in their veins, angels descending from the skies like meteors for constant battle, and a group of fighters willing to save everything from all this madness - a thrilling tale of action, magic, sci-fi, and spectacle indeed.
I must point out that aforementioned action as one of the high points of the story, as its brutal and gritty details never fail to deliver. I noticed pretty much nothing to point out in terms of grammar, nice and clean. With the worldbuilding/lore, there's admittedly a lot of explaining and such, but not enough to significantly bog anything down. And the overall concept must be commended too, it's very imaginative; almost like cyberpunk Evangelion with X-Men.
As is the case with a lot of stories that focus on a large group of main characters, the ones here are also written diversely, possessing unique, recognizeable traits and personalities that stick with you; the good, the bad, the weird, the cryptic, and of course, the lil' zero-to-hero, Damien. Readers will definitely be eager to follow this journey of the so-called "Sinners" and see where they'll be led to.
Overall, a very dark but also very nice fantasy/sci-fi romp. - Christopher VincentRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I was completely sucked into reading Ichor of the Dawn World. Starting out, I was immediately thrown into the action and getting to know a multitude of characters. The gritty undertone of the story was compelling and mind bending in a way that fully encompassed me into the world they live in.
Style: This was spot on, no doubt about it. The pacing and action was detailed while refraining from being a slog to read through. I could feel the author's stylistic choices in how they were able to incorporate that into their writing. This led to an immersive and unique experience that I do not regret taking a leap of faith into.
Story: The story, oh, the story. I'm not sure how the author was able to think up such a wild and entertaining premise. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say the overall context of what's transpiring through the story was enough to visually build out what was happening in my mind. At the same time, it left me wondering what was going to happen next, but that could be the really good cliff hangers scattered through the plot. There were twists that I was not expecting, no matter how well I thought I had a grasp on the situation.
Grammar: While there were a couple parts of the story I felt were the slightest bit choppy, it was only small errors that a quick one or two word change could fix. Either way, it didn't take away from the experience, and I was able to blaze through the story due to how compelled I was to click "next chapter."
Characters: This was a true shining point for me. I live for character development, both in shows and books. Each character felt different and alive. There were wildly ranging defining features for each individual, and the author was able to shine more light on why those characters were the way that they were through bits and pieces here and there, giving me miniature stories to discover these characters through.
Overall: Fantastic story, one I fully expect the author to make thrive. If you don't believe me, jus - Cuori RoseRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This one hooked me from the start. Ichor of Dawn is one of the more impressive and original stories I’ve come across on Royal Road. The world-building is top-tier, dense, imaginative, and genuinely unique, especially for this platform.
The setting is dark and gritty in all the right ways. New Order, the last surviving city, is full of mystery and tension, and the blend of horror and fantasy is handled incredibly well. There’s a constant sense of unease, and the lore behind the divine blood, angelic forms, and creeping corruption adds real depth to the world. The Sinners are intriguing and well written. They’re flawed, complicated, and carry the weight of their pasts. What really makes this work stand out is how much it builds. It’s not just edgy for the sake of it. There’s real thought behind the themes, identity, sin, and transformation, and it all ties into the story’s direction, which is incredibly well written.
If you’re looking for a darker, more cerebral fantasy with weight, style, and something to say, Ichor of Dawn is absolutely worth your time. I usually read a lot of contemporary works, and typically don't like fantasy, but this work is different. I highly recommend it and this author's other works. All are very great! - Inkk001Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I should start by saying that I'm generally not a fan of anything involving gods and similar themes. But much like Shadow Slave, this work tackles the subject without going overboard, so it works for me. The story has a lot of potential and many strong points. First, the narration is impressively smooth. The descriptions—especially the combat scenes—are extremely well done, detailed, and easy to follow. The tension and overall atmosphere of the story come through very clearly.
Speaking of which, the tone is rather dark, but without ever becoming shocking or overwhelming. At the same time, it manages to retain a kind of warmth in its ambiance. That combination surprisingly works really well.
Another highlight is the psychological aspect of the story, particularly through Damien’s moral dilemmas and his psychological evolution.
The characters are also one of the story’s greatest strengths. Each one has their own personality, background, and relevance to the plot. Damien, in particular, is a very endearing main character, and it’s easy to feel empathy for him. If there’s one thing that could be improved, though, it’s the pace of his development. He goes from a complete beginner to a somewhat seasoned fighter in the span of just two weeks, which feels far too fast in my opinion.
Another area that could use improvement is the world-building explanations. The story tends to overload the reader with too much information at once—especially in the part with Kaluv. The info is too dense and not presented in a very digestible way.
All things considered, though, this is a fantastic work with one of the richest world-buildings I’ve come across on this platform. I’ll definitely keep reading. - AinoumRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story hits the ground running. Not in a flashy explosive way or with some “look at me, epic magic time” moment. It draws you in slowly, and before you know it you're immersed. It's pleasant to see such inviting, confient worldbuilding. You can feel it breathing around the characters. The magic and mechanics are handled naturally, and the plot progression feels very purposeful.
Characters
From the very first chapter, the cast will grab your attention. Each Sinner feels distinct. Their interactions are fun to watch and engaging. Damiem's character is pleasant and bounces well with everyone else's.
Damien’s power stood out to me The most. It feels earned, not handed to him or picking him. That makes a huge difference in a world full of “chosen one” stories. You can feel him fighting for every step forward, and it’s satisfying to see him struggle and grow.
Story
This isn’t a story that rushes through the plot. The story takes its time. You watch the characters climb, step by step. It’s slow-burn, but in the best way. The combat scenes are solid and tense. The reveals hit when they should. The writing trusts you to understand what’s happening without over-explaining and best of all, at least to me, is it doesn’t talk down to you.
Style & Flow
This stood out to me the most. The writing is smooth. It knows when to be serious and when to have fun. The lead can feel reactive at times, but it’s not often enough to pull you out of the story. Even when some group scenes could use a little sensory detail for short attention-spanners like myself, all of it is minor in the face of an otherwise smooth and steady read.
Overall
Ichor of Dawn is a story that intertwines weight and myth, well structured and well paced for those who like slow burn with explosiveness when it matters. The world is very immersive. The characters are interesting, sometimes unlikable, but still lovable. If you enjoy character-driven progression, tactical fights, and a story that takes its time but rewar - AncienthipsterRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Review for Chapters 1–14 of Ichor of the Dawn World:
At its core, Ichor of the Dawn World is a gritty, kinetic story of defiance, divinity, and moral corruption. Set in a city where god-blood grants both power and damnation, the story follows a misfit group of “Sinners” as they rise against a system ruled by Seraphim and Angels. In this second arc, the focus narrows to infiltration, ideological division, and personal struggles, combining espionage with revenge and layering action with existential doubt.
The author demonstrates a strong sense of pacing and emotional control. Combat scenes crackle with energy, tight, efficient, and cinematic, while philosophical or personal moments breathe room, often ending on powerful emotional beats. Dialogue, too, stands out: characters speak in ways that reflect their inner scars and hardened personas. Something is captivating about how every moment between action scenes feels on the verge of eruption, like walking on broken glass with bare feet.
Another major strength is the consistent tone of the world. Tarkkovet feels authentic: from its bureaucratic absurdities to its brutalist architecture and warring corporations, everything aligns with the same grimdark tone. The setting isn’t just a background; it actively engages in the story. Even humor, when it appears (primarily through characters like Indigo or Barnett), is nuanced and deliberate, often revealing more about the world’s decay than about levity.
Story — 4.5 / 5
This arc develops beautifully, with increasing narrative tension and moral complexity. The dual infiltration of red and blue factions is a clever structural choice, allowing the characters to investigate opposing ideologies and concealed motives. Chapter 13 sets the political foundation, while Chapters 14 and later introduce emotional depth. The satire in Khechol’s indoctrination materials is unsettlingly effective, and Elmer’s grief subplot in Chapter 14 amplifies the stakes without feeling unnatural. The only - WolfLunaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is a well written and engaging chapter that successfully builds tension, introduces new powers, and deepens the mysteries surrounding the characters and their world. The dialogue is functional and reveals character, and the plot moves forward effectively. With a few minor tweaks to enhance clarity and impact in certain moments, this chapter could be even stronger. The introduction of Damien's Manifest and the lingering questions about his fight with Barnett are particularly compelling hooks for the reader to continue.
Suggestions:
Avidia's Recognition of Barnett: The hint that Avidia knows Barnett from somewhere is intriguing but could be subtly expanded upon. Perhaps a flicker of a specific memory in her eyes or a slightly more telling phrase could deepen this connection without revealing too much too soon.
Clarity on "Angel": Rita's question about the "Angel" is the first mention of this entity in the chapter. Providing a little more context about what or who the Angel is, even if just that it was Null's opponent, would be helpful.
Null's Silence: While his silence after returning with the corpse adds to his mystique, a single line of explanation about the Angel fight, even a brief, dismissive one, could provide more context and satisfy the reader's curiosity slightly.
