Alex meets a mysterious woman named Rinoa on a train to Diaedem Harbor. They bond over their shared interest in writing, and Rinoa hints at a local urban legend about the Undead. Later, as Alex reaches his new forest home, he encounters a series of chilling events, culminating in a life-and-death struggle with a cloaked intruder.

During the confrontation, a spirit attacks him, and a woman named Scarlett Leonhart reveals herself as a malevolent force with an unusual interest in Alex. He takes a grievous blow for her accidentally, causing Scarlett to claim Alex as her own... whether he wants it or not.
