However, she is growing more and more torn by her tendency to sympathize with the human victims, causing a rift between her and the other Sirens. She does participate in the bloodshed due to a duty to her tribe, but all of that may change when she sees the man of her dreams aboard a viking ship that she is drawing to its demise. Author Note: I’m sorry I have a crappy AI cover. I can’t afford a real artist to make a cover right now but I do want to support a real artist in the future when I have the means to. I guarantee that my story is 100% human made. I do NOT use AI in ANY part of my writing process, for better or for worse. I don’t know if that matters to anyone, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case it does.-Thorn

- Eva_EverquillRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a wonderfully immersive fantasy that pulls you in with vivid descriptions and a deeply imaginative world. Throughout the narrative, the setting feels both magical and tangible, as if the siren realm exists just beneath the surface of our own. The author has clearly invested a great deal of thought into the world building. The society of sirens is rich with politics, hierarchy, and attitude, offering a darker and more complex take on these mythical beings than one typically encounters.
One of the most impressive elements is the wide range of characters. Each feels distinct, with names that are thematically tied to the underwater world. The cast is large, but it’s easy to keep track of everyone due to their unique voices and personalities. My personal favorite is Ripper, the orca, who truly lives up to its name by tearing through every foe with flair.
I also appreciated the subtle inclusion of real-world facts, such as the fascinating detail that sperm whales sleep vertically. These elements not only enhance the fantasy but also add a layer of realism, showing the depth of research that has gone into the story.
The pacing is steady and fits well with the level of detail. While there may be minor technical hiccups, there are no glaring grammar issues that pull you out of the story. The author is keen to address any mistakes, which speaks to their dedication to honing the craft of storytelling.
If you're looking for an immersive fantasy with depth, heart, and a darker edge to sirens, this is a must-read. - God of LiesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.01st Chapter review - though I intend to read more! The author lays out the situation swiftly - a tribe of mermaids (sirens actually), migrated, a merman romantic interest on the horizon, but the tribe's attention is caught by a human ship (prey!) and the MC's attention by a handsome giant on board! All fairly standard Little Mermaid fare so far, though it is nice to have the ring of familiarity. But that's only the starting point! Ariel never devoured a human after filling it with spikes like a pin cushion! Bloodthirsty sirens these are, and we get to see their attack against the human ship... an attack that can only end one way!
But our MC is unwilling to partake of the bloodshed, and is immediately at conflict with her kin... each siren has their own power set, and some are very powerful indeed...
It's a fantastic setup with lots of hooks, and the action is breathtakingly described. I loved some of the fishy details such as jellyfish-painted nails and claw crab hair clips. If the author is not female, he is doing a good job writing one (or many!).
The 1st chapter ends in a hook which I won't spoil - and hooked I am! I shall update this review once I have read more!
My only criticism is perhaps that there is a lot of exposition at the beginning - this is a double-edged sword. It sets out store rapidly (a very RR style!) and perhaps this is good, but can be a bit dry, and I personally prefer more show than tell. But this doesn't last long before the action begins and the stakes are raised, so it's very forgiveable!
This is quite a new story, and I am excited to see where it goes next! - ZayricRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've just read the first two chapters and I'm genuinely surprised by how much I like this story. It has really caught me off guard.
The story is very well written and flows effortlessly. The descriptive language is incredible. I feel like I can see everything that is happening. The characters also feel real, and without giving too much away, I already know which one's too hate.
We get a good sense of the current events and what has led to them, and also the inner workings of the mermaids- the politics, rivalry and expectations.
The best part of the story for me was that it plunged straight into the action, no slow build up. And yet, it still felt subtle and elegantly done. No over the top theatrics, just well written and clear.
The powers and abilities are well described without being overbearing. There is a sharp line between beauty and brutality mentioned-
The part where melody's beautiful nails become claw like talons. This serves as a sharp remined that melody is not human. It also raises the question- is she more of a monster than we are lead to believe at this point? is she just curious about this human? or is she just rebelling against her true nature and hasn't fully accepted it.
I'm really keen to follow how this story progresses. Glad I found it early!
Can not fault it. Will be following!
