Blood for life and life for magic.
At the age of six, Kizu was kidnapped and raised by a crone living deep in a tropical basin. Rescued ten years later, he returned to his negligent parents and former childhood life only to discover his older sister both disowned and missing.
After his homecoming, his parents quickly signed him up for Shinzou Academy. Three years behind every other student his age, he was ranked as the overall worst student in the academy. With a cut-throat student body and mysteries around every corner, Kizu must climb the rankings if he wants to discover the truth about his sister's legacy.
There will be blood. There will be curses. There will be academia.
(Think Harry Potter school setting with D&D/Mother of Learning inspired magic...with a bloody twist)

- yagathaiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It seems like it's really difficult to make a magical academy story that doesn't immediately devolve into a half dozen tired cliches. I'm happy that this story doesn't do that, despite the title. It has solid characterization, a nice balance of action, slice of life, and progression, and a main character that is neither unbelievably stupid nor unrealistically powerful and wise. I'm really happy I stumbled across this fiction!
- HarrisoneCalzoneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As mentioned this book scratches that magic academy itch. I've come from reading over 90 chapters in the original upload and I'm already noticing improvements on what was already a well written webnovel. So expect good grammar and prose. Something different about this one is the unique origin for the MC that affects how he interacts with the other characters in a big way, so if you like an MC who's clearly good at what he does you'll enjoy this.
- HughgentRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm enjoying this story.
I'm coming into this without reading any of the previous version.
This is an easy read. I blazed through all the available chapters within two days. I really enjoyed the pace of things. There's a minimal amount of backstory for the protagonist, but we are taken through said backstory in the early chapters. So I think it's a perfect amount for what has happened already.
I also really like how internally consistent things are. Magic costs something, and that cost affects the characters.
I think this story is worth reading. It's enjoyable. - IncognitoQuestgiverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've copied most of this review over from the previous draft.
It's a good story. While I really have enjoyed it, I am a bit annoyed that the author decided to relaunch. It's annoying. But the writing flows better than before and there is enough new stuff that i guess it makes sense. tbh, I'm mostly skimming and looking for the new stuff. And she's releasing chapters quickly so I thought I might as well just paste my old review here.
It's very much a Harry Potter kind of story. If you're looking to scratch that itch, this is for you. (Better than some actual published Harry Potter clones I've read). It keeps the spirit of the genre without getting too troupey or following the same stories. But it also has power scaling and ranks within the school. I'm interested to see what she does with it.
I like the fact that we got to the magic school quickly (though I notice already the pace seems to be slowing down a bit. But that's fine). I like the faster pace in comparision with her last story (The Last Topaz).
I like the animal companion
Note- I like the new foreshadowing that's been set up. - Xerxes145Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0If, as I did, you were to judge this book only on its admittedly cliché-sounding title and seemingly derivative premise, you will be shocked by its quality. Here is a great story that is simply so much fun to read. The author playfully pokes fun at genre tropes and isn't afraid to indulge in the humorous wackiness that makes magical school stories so much fun. That said, the worldbuilding and character development are surprisingly deep. I couldn't stop myself from reading both Book 1 and Book 2 in less than a week.
Let's start with the characters, including our main character, Kaga Kizu. Each of them is a lot of fun. There is plenty of comedic relief, alongside slightly cartoonish villains somehow remain terrifying. As a spirited wacky witch-child with a penchant for pushing the boundaries, Kizu is engrossing to watch develop.
The magic system and world at large feel like a great collection of fairytale classics that somehow comes together into a cohesive and plausible world. Tiny details about the reality of living in a world of monsters and magic really flesh out the premise. It's clear that the author has had a lot of fun developing every detail here. It feels lived-in and expansive.
I will note that the plot is perhaps a bit generic and predictable. There is also an element of simply enjoying the setting of a magical school that isn't necessarily streamlined or captivating, but it is far from entertaining. In this regard, I think the book fits well with its genre peers, not far from Harry Potter (though with added realism and a completely unique touch of wackiness) or the Kingkiller Chronicles (though certainly less literary).
All in all, I would definitely recommend this fiction, and I will be following this author closely. - caerulexRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So much of what makes magic academies a fun trope is that they're weird. The most obvious example is Hogwarts, which is extremely unique and memorable, with lots of peculiar quirks, dangerous zones, forgotten passages, etc.
Blood Curse Academia (BCA) succeeds in capturing a similar charming quirkiness. One of the professors is a turkey, for instance, but in a really funny, "How did the professor's spell go so wrong and turn them into a turkey?" kind of way. Nobody knows the full story. The turkey is married to another (human) professor. Will the turkey ever un-turkey themselves? I was rolling reading about the turkey prof, and there were lots of other random details I found similarly hilarious.
Also, if you like the HP trope of crazy unexplored stuff in the basement, BCA has that in spades. There's a magic labyrinth underneath the academy and it's full of monsters, though most people never go down there and just don't worry about it since it's all sealed up behind a door. Yeah, just casual crazy magical academy stuff.
I've mostly just focused on the general academy premise/tropes, so I'll focus now on the characters. I really enjoyed Kizu's perspective. He's a talented MC who learned magic from an OP witch, but just lacks the actual book knowledge to do well on placement exams. He also has a strong drive to improve and uncover the mystery of what happened to his sister, which I found made for a good balance of more slice-of-life magic school elements and "why was my sister expelled and disowned and nobody will tell me why" mystery (that leads to darker, more serious adventure).
The writing is a cut above, now even more so after extensive professional edits.
I highly recommend it to people looking for a fun magic academy story that really captures what makes that trope so great. - weewRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is very much a slice-of-life kind of story. There are good characters, an interesting setting, some intriguing mystery to motivate the main character. It kind of has some Harry-Potter-esque school shenanigans, but at the same time everything seemed to move a bit slowly with relatively low stakes.
It's just not for me, to be honest, but other people may enjoy it more. - AssmosesRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Book 1 - FANTASTIC, I loved book one through and through I might have a couple gripes but nothing I can remember directly off the top of my dome.
So far everything I had managed to read after the introduction of
Anata(?) the MC's niece. I hate that trope with a passion of the woefully unprepared MC having to take care of or at least house and keep safe and HIDDEN a child while still having to do a bunch of absolutely life threatening challenges and adventures ontop of anything else the author wants to make the MC juggle at the same time.
and as said in another review it gets a huge focus on relationships and the MC being this cringey bad at flirting dude while he still very much should not be doing that shit right now and honestly just meh. Might be for you but no longer for me - BluetorcRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The start of the story is excellent and I originally rated this 5 stars. It has an interesting and unique MC in an unusual situation with suspense and action. I particularly love that the MC acts out of his unusual past in realistic ways. The author put a decent bit of thought and effort into the main character and it shows.
However later on, There is very little suspense and it becomes more of a slice of life series. There is a lot of focus on relationships/characters but they are not particularly done well: they don’t feel real or have depth. The story just sort of loses its drive, and while it still has a plot it is very slow and mainly focuses on relationship development. - Slightly_MorbidRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5First, this book isn't bad at all. As RR readers tend to give five stars for everything, I felt I needed to start with saying that. The origin story of the main character differs from other stories, the Academy part promises quirky teachers, diverse students, a medley of interesting classes and there's a mystery of a disappeared sister. All good.
My main problem fifteen chapters in is that I haven't gotten any reason to care about the main character. There's no real personality established, he walks around with a complacent attitude to most of every. All interactions with others have been at surface level. His background should have made interactions more interesting, but while it makes others curious, he himself is quite bland.
His background also spoils part of the wonder of a magic academy. There's no surprise, giddiness or excitement of learning magic. It's more like a going to a new lesson in algebra. They go to a class for learning shielding magic and everyone within minutes have small shields up for running as a matter of fact. There's hardly any introduction to class. Can everyone use magic? Don't even have to learn how ton harness it depending on for what usage? Without the excitement and wonder of learning magic, some of the fun with a magic academy setting disappears.
My main problem is that the book hasn't really gotten me interested enough to continue, despite all the good things to say about the writing. Were I younger and perhaps more part of the target group, then perhaps I would have connected better.
Regardless, I think the author is on the right way and hope they will continue to write. Not giving the story longer time might have been my mistake.
