Community Rating
Description
Waking up in an abandoned city is creepy enough, but immediately being set upon by nightmarish creatures when you have nothing to your name but the clothes on your back takes it to a whole new level.
Lanek will have to learn to survive in a post apocalyptic fantasy world without a guide, tutorial, or teacher aside from a distinctly unhelpful System. He is armed with a forgotten class that allows him to manipulate souls and animal companions that can evolve and grow alongside him in power.
He'll need all the power he can get if he wants to have even the slightest chance of carving out a new home for himself and his fellow survivors in the face of an overwhelming and mysterious enemy that threatens the gods themselves.

- Arawn DragonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: The story has a lot of tense moments and a bit of suspense that keep the intrigue gripping. The author does a good job of grabbing the reader from the beginning. Handling the tension, the loneliness of the city, and the destruction.
Story: Lanek appears in a new world, in an unknown room whose house is being attacked by a strange creature, from there on there will be many tense moments while the MC tries to survive and gets a weapon ....
(which I honestly wished he would get rid of it because I was suspicious of it at the beginning. And sounded like something anyone in their right mind should avoid.)
But little by little he gets more information about this world and the dungeon near the city, as well as the particular gods: the void and the primordial. This story has unique skills and good world-building.
Characters: Lanek, the main character is a normal guy trying to survive in a new world he knows nothing about. He tries to do the best he can with the little he has on hand.
I loved Kazuma, he's a good traveling companion (even when he makes fun of how bad the MC is at fishing).
The gods are a separate story, and it's fun to watch them interact with each other (even when they ignore the MC).
Grammar: I have nothing to say in this aspect.
In short, it's an intriguing story with a bit of suspense, that opens up many questions including the true origin of certain monsters as we see how Lanek and his new companion make it through their new lives and struggle to survive and adapt. - anthony59237Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, this story follows our MC, Lanek as he finds himself in a different world, a post apocalyptic world devoid of life so far. He navigates through a ruined city, fending off monsters, discovering how the system operates, and making spirit companions. It's been a pretty fun ride so far, as I read up to chapter 6.
Style: Style was good and consistent. 3rd person POV, Easy to read and straightforward. Plenty of insight into Lanek's mind as he traverses through the new world.
Grammar: Grammar is mostly fine and I did not notice any major errors.
Story: Story is pretty cool so far. It's just getting started with still lots to learn about the world, but the system is cool, the world is mysterious, and full of creatures out to kill poor Lanek!
Character: We only have our MC so far, aside from his spirit companions, but he is a solid enough character so far, who I'm sure we'll see some more growth from in future chapters. He gets a semi new lease on life, gaining a slightly younger and more athletic build after having switched worlds. He wasn't taking caring of his old body and was on his way to heart disease, so at least he has that going for him. He also has a furry leopard pal so far, that has his back, as well as the spirit, Caelis who helps guide him.
Overall, this is a fun and easy read and I'd recommend to any LitRPG fans. Great job! - septembersjudgeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When I began this story, I dove in blind, not relying on reviews but solely on the synopsis. Even with such minimal context, the narrative instantly resonated with me, drawing me into its world and its intricacies. The synopsis, while offering only a skeletal insight, hinted at the depth and allure the story held.
This tale offers a refreshing take on the isekai genre. What struck me most was the innovative approach you took, blending familiar elements with unexpected twists. I've come across many stories in this genre, but yours stands distinct. Your writing style, combined with the rich characterization, makes this a standout piece.
Lanek, in particular, captured my attention. His journey from a world of known concerns to an alien realm, where past worries fade away, mirrors the classic isekai trajectory. Yet, through your unique narrative style, you've breathed new life into this trope. Lanek's depth, layered personality, and the relatability he exudes make him a character readers will undoubtedly root for.
Beyond the characters, the pacing is masterfully executed. It maintains a rhythm that keeps readers engaged, building anticipation while ensuring they're never overwhelmed. It's a delicate balance, and you've achieved it seamlessly.
In conclusion, from its engaging storyline and well-crafted characters to its impeccable pacing, this story has left an indelible mark on me. I eagerly await each chapter, eager to delve deeper into this world you've crafted so skillfully. - sinfathRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It’s an interesting take on an isekai story. The setting gives the author a lot of flexibility, which I hope they take advantage of.
As far as the main character goes, I feel like he is reacting realistically to the situation rather than diving headfirst into thinking that this is amazing or no big deal with no real emotional adjustment. I mean, you would imagine anyone in this situation freaking out, especially once the weird sounds and baddies show up. I’m also a fan of not giving the protagonist a traditional weapon or making them some kind of martial arts master, he’s going to have to work and train to survive. Or, at least, that’s where I hope it goes.
The writing style works. I’ve never been a big fan of writing styles that go into the minutiae of even those things that are not important to the story, I prefer that the author gets to the point. Finally, the pacing is good so far, the author provides moments for the character to breathe and think about the situation without making you wait too long for the next event or action scene.
I didn’t notice any issues with the spelling or grammar.
All in all, a promising start to a new series and I’m pretty curious to see where it goes next. - DedlineRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am not a fan of LitRPG, yet I like this one. Because it didn't give the feeling of a LitRPG, but more like of a fantasy thriller one. (Kinda like "LotM" and "Shadow Slave", 2 great fics.) The atmosphere was eerie and intense, the character was scared, confused and curious in the situation (in short, relatable). Oh, and the cat was cute too. Let's delve deeper into this.
"Binder of Souls" offers a commendable approach to the isekai genre, making it highly accessible to newcomers interested in exploring the LitRPG/isekai realm. Aurathas's storytelling style deserves special mention, as it effectively immerses readers in his world. Right from the beginning, you gain a profound sense of the isolation and desolation of the starting zone through his writing. This creates a poignant connection, allowing readers to empathize with Lanek's predicament. The descriptions of combat scenes strike a great balance, providing clarity without overwhelming details. In sum, the narrative paints a clear and evocative picture, getting straight to the point, which is greatly appreciated.
The story, while not really groundbreaking, offers a refreshing take on the genre. "Binder of Souls" wastes no time on superfluous padding that often plagues isekai stories, opting for an engaging and efficient approach to world-building and character introduction. The combination of skills and stats adds a layer of intrigue to the plot, making it more unpredictable but also at the same time relatively logical. The story flows seamlessly from Lanek's arrival in the new world to his ongoing adventures.
In terms of grammar, there are no notable issues. But well, English is not my first language, so I would just let you decide that for yourself
The characters, particularly Lanek, are well-crafted. His reactions to various situations stay true to his character, keeping him grounded and relatable. From what I read on this site, many MCs just act and make weird decision for no reason at all, and then somehow - JokeshadowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Don't have much to say except the story and characters are fun and engaging. The LITRPG aspects are present and have reel importance and impact to the story without being overbearing. The world building so far has been interesting and I like how the mysteries surounding the story is slowly being unraveled. All to say that i hope this story is long one, since i'll be reading all of it. Keep it up author!
- WilliamGabriel10Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0When I began reading this story, I wasn't sure what to expect.
However, I was pleasantly surprised. While I am not ordinarily a fan of Isekai, this one is a standout. The protagonist, Lanek, is memorable, intelligent, and competent while still mortal. He reacts to his situation rationally and realistically. His interactions with the bleak world he arrives in are an absolute highlight of the story.
The plot is well written from what I've seen so far. The mystery of the dead city Lanek arrives in gradually unravels. As it does, you learn more and are introduced to the world efficiently but tantalizingly. The author does a good job of giving only a little information at once but not leaving you in the dark.
Lanek, despite being far more intelligent than most Isekai protagonists, is also only mortal. He often finds himself in grave danger, with a real sense of tension and stakes about things.
All of this makes for an excellent story. I recommend trying it out, especially if you like intelligent main characters. - Crusader ExodusRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This review is done as part of a review swap.
The author wastes zero time in getting this adventure up and running from the get-go. The first seven chapters are lean and aggressive in their approach: this reader greatly appreciates that! Many Isekai adventures tend to tip-tap between throttle and brakes: they tap the throttle for plot, tap the brakes for exposition. Binder of Souls leans hard on the gas, but sets up the world and environment in a manner that wants you asking for more as a reader.
Style and grammar are both five out of five for me as a reader. I did not notice any grammatical issues while reading, and the rapid-fire style, as mentioned, is a big plus.
Story also gets full marks! By chapter seven we have some basic tropes laid out: dungeon, adventurer's guild, medieval-style city, monsters, etc. What I appreciate is the "Whodunnit" style of introducing us to a post-fall society. Readers see and learn about Caelis in an organic manner, and it raises many questions in the reader's mind and drives engagement. Bravo!
Character is the weakest point, simply because there isn't much exposition about the character in the first handful of chapters. I like the fact they are self-aware of their situation, that's a nice literary shortcut that acts as a sort of fourth-wall handshake and acknowledgement between the protagonist and the reader. I deducted a point simply because I felt that there could have been a touch more character development in the opening chapters. Perhaps some more inner dialogue or object/place recognition might do the trick. I.E. "Oh, a weapon/armor/architectural style that reminds me of that game or story I loved/hated" could work!
Overall, I give Binder of Souls a 4.5/5, and I'm adding it to my reading list! - Z4NE134Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Binder of Souls is a solid approach to the isekai genre! The story is incredibly approachable and I would honestly recommend it to anyone wanting to get their feet wet with a LitRPG/isekai.
Style: Aurathas does a really good job of placing the reader into his world. Right from the get go, you get a great sense of how isolated and empty the starting zone is just from his writing style. Not only does the character feel alone, but we as the reader feel that as well and it just allows us to sympathize with Lanek’s situation more. The moments of combat were detailed enough to give us a clear/gripping idea of what was happening, while also not being overly descriptive. Overall, the picture painted in this story gets right to the point and I appreciate that a lot!
Story: While this story isn’t entirely “unique and groundbreaking”, the way Aurathas approaches the genre is really refreshing. Once again, Binder of Souls gets right to the point and doesn’t waste your time with unnecessary padding (this plagues a lot of isekai stories imo). You learn about the world and its inhabitants in a way that is both engaging and timely. I feel that the stats are also fairly interesting, combining certain skills in ways that I haven’t really seen done before. The story just kind of flows together seamlessly from Lanek’s arrival in the new world to his ongoing travels and that honestly just added to my overall enjoyment.
Grammar: Nothing grammar related to note. I do think a wider variety of adjectives would propel this story even further, but what’s currently present is more than enough to get the job done.
Characters: The characters so far have been solid! I think Lanek is fairly believable and his reactions to certain moments make total sense, keeping him grounded and human. His interactions with his feline companion Kazuma, were a welcome addition as well. I do wish there was a wider cast though, simply because I want to see how the author would handle a back n forth between a multitu - darkocean (J. L. S.)Royal Road★★★★ 4.0This is an agreed upon review swap with the author.
General thoughts: Even from the first chapter, this story has flair, I like all the questions it raises.
Characterization: I like that the hero stays calm in chapter one, and tries to figure out what is going on without losing his composure. At this time he's not under too much pressure and I wonder how he'll react if things were to pick up?
I wonder if he's going to become proficient with the weapon, or if later on he'll find others? If he does learn to use it, it'll be good for his character growth and confidence.
I appreciate that there's no overly long info dumps, so that's refreshing.
I adore that this is taking a nice dark twist right off the bat, without going into edgelord. :D
Style:
Places where the tension could be pushed a little harder, making it even better:
'He thought as he heard a crashing sound from the first floor, followed by another shriek'
In my personal option, I'd give this line its own separate paragraph as it's important, being that the tone of the story suddenly switched to fearful for Lanek.
The descriptions could use a bit more of a push, but it's a hard to choose between pacing and descriptions, it's a balance for sure. I like that the word choices the character uses are unique, it's a nice change from the norm. A personal preference is that the narration is a little more distant than I'd like. This isn't a fault, though.
World building:
I like that he finds a dagger on a chain weapon, is it a kyoketsu-shoge? Or maybe like a Sheng Biao? I love all things from the past. Another + for this story, you can tell research went into it and that, the author uses a light hand, very nice.
You can tell that there's so much more to come and that the elements of this world are being dipped fed to readers. I don't want to say anything about where the creature is at, as that'd give away the first chapter ending.
