Description

In the real world, Artemus had worn many masks. Once draped in the dark cloak of crime, he had shifted to the warmth of family ties, dreaming only of a silent sunset to his days. But even in twilight, shadows from the past have a way of stretching long and seeking their due.

Suddenly thrust into a realm where the mechanics of video games intertwine with the horrors of one's deepest nightmares, Artemus finds himself at a crossroads once more. With a player’s interface at his fingertips, and stats, quests, and loot drops framing his every move, will he choose the righteous path of the hero, the treacherous allure of the villain, or simply embrace the chaos that always seemed to be his true calling?

Dive into the pixelated heart of this LITRPG / GameLit saga, where our protagonist stands balanced on the knife's edge – not quite the savior, far from the destroyer, but always the wild card. Join Artemus as he levels up in a world that doesn’t just reward skill, but also spirit, and where being unpredictable might just be the greatest power of all.

Better Than a Hero by author Gemini Sin is a litRPG themed novel following Alphonse, an experienced member of a criminal organization, as he finds himself in another world, following after the repayment of an old debt to the powers that be. The story is numbers-light for a litRPG, but makes use of system elements. The protagonist is a funny guy, and I enjoyed his segments the most, as he verges toward an over-the-top personality, which keeps you watching as he punches bunnies. (They know what they did).
All in all, if you are interested in a quirky low-numbers litRPG, you should give this one a fair shot! =)
