- SilereVitamRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I liked the novelty of it, and there is so much I want to know. Sometimes there can be a long period between a skill being attained, and the relevance of its implementation being shown. I think the characters are good, and the setting is interesting. There feels like there is a lot of world to explore, and I look forward to where it is going.
- dtracersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great story about a ship and it's crew in a new world. Still very very early but it looks like it will build up to a great adventure.
Characters are smart and reasonable which is really nice. But they are also still filled with humanity willing to help others. The crew is still "small" in that most have names. But not everyone. This book gives me the feeling that the crew will get too large to name many people and it is starting that off part way.
Good book. Y'all should read it! - ElvenkindRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really enjoyed it so far. Interesting premise, pretty good writing, good execution.I love the idea of a ship that is a nation unto itself in a new world. Loved the star trek namesake also.I enjoy how the focus shifts to other characters and how they find their niche. Find their place in the ship and the world. And because of their late initiation to the system they already have enough skill to earn advanced classes. There are annoyances, everyone speaks similarly. Be they normal civilians, veterans, ship captains, slaves. All sound like early 20s kid off the street. The Captain uses this same relaxed tone even when speaking to another -possibly hostile- ship over horn. Weird.Something that stands out is the lac of procedures. No Standards, SOP, checklists. It's jarring enough to be irritating. It gives the impression the Captain is winging it all the time. I know this situation isn't in a guidebook, but Captains are constantly confronted with new / strange situations. They are problem solvers. Also, overuse of the word 'got' (any use is too much really)MistressOP did a fantastic review. I feel no need to repeat what they said so well.Overall though. Love it. With a good editor it would be a great book.
- Eternal Red Mist AncestorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's hard to find a story with a unique concept, and even harder to find one done well. However, I seem to finally have stumbled across some hidden treasure. So far, this has kept me entranced in a way that hasn't happened in a while, and I've probably spent more time reading than I should haha. There are quite a few characters, sometimes making it hard for my pebble brain to keep up, but they all feel different and important to the story. I find myself excited when I come across any new information that increases the depth and intrigue of said characters. If you are looking for something super fast-paced, this wouldn't be it, and while I have had times where I wished that it could move a little faster, each event feels important and interesting.I definitely find myself curious and excited for where this story might go, can't wait to see what happens.
- Joeli Jason DitokaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0new reader - just a couple of dozen chapters in and can’t wait to see how the story unfolds… it is a bit of a slow burn but i’m enjoying the slow discovery of their new world and how things work… showing us through various pov which I also enjoyed - particularly antagonists pov…
- 1chipaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Just joking. This has nothing to do with the Love Boat. I didn't think I was going to like this story much, but I was looking for a different kind of isekai, and gave it a try. So far, I'm really invested and looking forward to see inventive skills and story development.
- Twin12243Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Really good so far! Up at chappie nine and im enjoying the litrpg aspects.
Something you may want to look back on in regards to the cruise ship sailing out would be cpmmunication with the PA (Port Authority) large vessels, like a cruise liner, would be in constant communication with the PA so the PA can coordinate its route alongside the several lther outgoing and inbound vessels coming in. What your captain did is likely very illegal by taking mattera into his own hands lmao. - JockeyOfDelayRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The pacing so far is engaging, with a good balance between story progression, worldbuilding, and developing the diverse cast of characters. The RPG elements are light, so there’s no drowning in numbers lol. The system doesn’t feel generic and I think it has a lot of potential. Grammar is good/fine.Overall, a unique and promising story that I had fun reading. I’m looking forward to see what happens next!
- KoboldPatrolRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5(as of chapter 40)
This story has a premise that hits many of my interests: Ocean, adventure, and numbers going up. A whole cruise ship (crew and their family only though) is isekai'd and now is cruising (hehe) through a fantasy world with a LitRPG system and magic. Adventure, yay!
"Behemoth of the Ocean" is a LitRPG story. Both the people and the ship gain skills from leveling, although so far there have not been too many blue boxes. There is an interesting mechanic with skills to either go wide (many weak skills) or deep (few but very powerful skills), but we're only at the beginning so far. It seems that the author has prepared a serious amount of world building, with different countries/powers acting in different ways, I'm looking forward to learning more about it. I feel that the main characters (i.e. the people from our world) are having it too easy to learn about the new world; somehow they met people who are able to info-dump them instead of them having to find out the mechanics by trial and error. Word choice is good and the narration is okay. Grammar and spelling are okay too. The story is in third-person style, following the captain. I'm a bit torn about the storyline and pacing: It hints at interesting stuff, but it also has lots of stuff happening that feels a bit too much for the little time that has passed in the story. It's been, what, two day only? Phew...
The cast is rather large (half to full dozen of important characters), which is a bit confusing right now. Their personalities are a bit different from each other but it's still a bit too early to say much about the individuals. It seems that some people are done rather well (security chief) while others are a bit lacking, though that might be a deliberate thing (captain?). The ship is slowly becoming sapient which, so far, is done well.
All in all, this might become a great adventure, if some of the initial hurdles get smoothed out. Since it is about the ocean, I'm rounding up to half stars. - MistressOPRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Initial ImpressionsI do not want to give away too much, but the first thirty chapters have been insanely good. However, the writing itself is not super strong. It could use some content edits for flow and clarity. There are moments of drama and world-building where the language is not rich enough to carry the weight of what is happening.EmotionalBeatsandSakugaMomentsYou can feel the author trying to hit those big emotional beats. They are the kind that should read like sakuga moments in anime. In books or animation, sakuga is that moment where the character looks out at a vast, unknowable world and it pulls at your heart. Everything slows down. It is the same beat you see in all good fantasy. Think of Dune when Paul is staring at the endless sand. Anime and cartoons spend large parts of the budget enriching those moments. There is a scene like that in this book, and the idea behind it is great. The setup and the potential are both there. You can tell exactly what the author was reaching for.The problem is that the beat is not fully fleshed out. It is missing that breath, that pause, and that sense of awe that makes sakuga hit the way it should. Because of that, the moment lands flat instead of landing deep.CharacterConcernsThe captain can get a little annoying sometimes. He takes on too much guilt and not enough responsibility. It becomes distracting because it feels self-serving and selfish with other people’s lives. It is not enough to ruin the story, but it is enough that you notice it.Personal EnjoymentEven with the rough edges, I am ready for whatever comes next. I would even be down for a farm on the boat. These chapters have me hooked.GenreVibesandComparisonsOne of my favorite series is Star Trek: Voyager. What sucked was the backlash it got at the time. Now people love it, but back then, they hated Janeway and the crew. I always loved the concept of a ship acting as its own country while trying to survive in the void. That idea is so cool. This book feels lik
