Description
“The seals are broken. The Hells awaken. Take up arms, humanity. The ancient enemy comes once more.”
Those words sat at the top of a class selection screen covering Theo Tande's vision shortly after surviving a suddengoblinattack in his backyard.
Still, those goblins droppedmoneywhen they died. And he'd just been fired. He'd made stupider choices... Probably.
His wife, Rio,strongly disagreed.

The system is cool, I like the vibe it has going on, and the future reveals seem to hint at a lot to come.
The overarching plot is cool, and there seems to be a lot going on in the background fleshing the world out
Overall a great read. - LinkNessMonsterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like this take on a system apocalypse. I like it so much I used the basic premise as a set up for a little off the cuff RPG with my brother while we were on vacation.
It's exciting and engaging and definitely something I could turn into a whole TTRPG system although I think you could do a good job with Pathfinder 2e since that supports a choice each level even if it isn't a class choice like in this system.
I really like Rio and I suspect that the author does too given how many POV chapters she gets. I obviously don't know if this is true but it feels like the author doesn't like Theo. And I get it given how deeply stupid Theo is at the beginning. I realize that there needed to be some kind of reason for Rio to not know so that her part would work out but I want to find another way. Probably something like wanting to tell her in person so Theo could prove it and she comes home from the city early while Theo is dealing with the neighbor stuff? Whatever is done, I think making Theo less of a numbskull is important for the book. It feels like the author doesn't like Theo. Whether that's right or wrong, the fact that the feeling exists is the important part. - MetalheadreddRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I find this book rather entertaining. Simple premise but the back story of why it is happening gets revealed later. As for the story itself, imagine if an entrance to the dungeon of Diablo suddenly appeared. Even the loot drops and classes remind me a lot of Diablo. Overall I have not see many grammar issues and I binged what is available in a day. If you like games like Diablo and Path of Exile, give this book a try.
- Prowler777Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great new book by an up and coming author! His last series Artificial Jelly was great also! He blends an airy writing style with seriousness and fun in a believable way! Love how he pulls in recent pop culture references as well! I hope this is the start of a new series! Excited!
- DaftGamerRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Gotta say, I usually don't care for Gamer fics because they usually deep dive into the DPS or OP builds super fast. Here, we have a regular down-on-his-luck person that discovers a cave on hos property and is attacked and almost dies from low level mobs.
It's a refreshing take to examine how a person from our world might go about making decisions. Heck, the only reason that I took half a star off was because he seemed more concerned with how his Avatar from his class possibilities looked than what they offered (and this could be explained away by disbelief).
Really looking forward to seeing how things advance. - OvpaviaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5While the characters are likeable, what really sell this novel for me is the take on the blending of fantasy (D&D style with goblins, etc) in the modern world which is just not done in other stories. Guns and are a thing and are not dismissed ("oh they are not magical so they don't work but good old iron swords, pipes and sticks are ok").
Reviewing some other comments, you might find criticism on the characters, mainly on Theodore (the main male character). As far as I am concern, the decision he makes, while not the brightest, were not out of the world and it surely doesn't deserves scores as low as what I saw. Sure you can dislike him or how the author writes him to be but that also means that you won't like any other characters that don't go your way in a great deal of other stories too.
A good novel to pick up for either fantasy readers or anyone who would like to try reading something new and well written. - LittleinsanityRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0An enjoyable story that I binged the first twenty chapters of, while not a new idea, system apocalypse, certainly done in an interesting way with enough difference to make it feel new and entertaining. The writing is easy to read and flows nicely making it a nice story to binge. I usually prefer to wait and read several chapters at once but find myself coming back and reading each time a new chapter comes out.
- TajarimRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Another entry to the "MC manages to be an idiot while supposedly being intelligent" - trope. The story is told through the view of husband and wife. The wife so far is pleasant to read about, while the husband is a vain imbecile. The grammar is pretty good, though. So I want to give 2,5 stars while I give 3,5 since it could still get good.
- The OxRoyal Road★★★ 3.0The main character in this story makes problematic decisions inconsistent with the type of person the author introduced him to be.
He is described as a very loving husband, deeply concerned with his beloved wife and upset that they are unable to have children. So upset that he was having anger issues that resulted in his loss of employment.
He is also a lower middle class American homeowner as far as we can tell from the text.
When confronted with the reality of dangerously, homicidally aggressive goblins in his backyard, a normal person would contact the authorities and/or do everything they could to dissuade their beloved wife from returning and endangering themselves.
But the MC in this story repeated disregards the danger to himself, his home (probably his only significant asset of any real value), and ESPECIALLY the wife he supposedly loves so much. Repeadedly. As in OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Without in any way trying to dissuade the author from writing stories, the plot as written is forcing the MC to blithely make decisions completely inconsistent with normal behavior and with the behavior of a so-called loving husband. It would appear this is primarily to create exciting and dangerous conflict situations to move the fantasy/dungeon/LitRPG elements of the story forward, but at the COST of having believable characters.
Have a fabulous day. - petercoRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The MC is an idiot.
Which could be fine, honestly, if only some decisions were made by his intelligent wife.
But he's kept her out of the loop forever, and when she finally finds out about the goblin threat, it's because she's abducted. It looks like she's only going to stay alive via plot armour, and the *intelligent* decision the story has been building up towards will be made because of the needs of immediate circumstance rather than because this intelligent woman has the opportunity to plan out a build.
It's disappointing because it had a promising start, I was rather looking forward to the guy informing his wife and then planning an actual good build with an actual intelligent person. And the main characters staying alive because they deserve to, rather than because they happen to be the lucky ones.
