Archmage Status (Action! Magic! LitRPG! Isekai!)
Community Rating
Description
Alex is an ordinary guy who wakes up lashed to an altar in a remote temple, in a fantasy world of a thousand islands. There are strange monsters, magic hatchets, arcane powers, and a motley crew of allies. Action, humor, and progression, too! Book 1 is complete, at about 160,000 words, and I just started Book 2. If you enjoy litRPG and isekai, give this one a shot!
What to expect:
* A steady build while Alex gains power. No OP.
* Violence and action, but sweetness and caring too: no sociopathic bloodshed.
* The vast majority of chapters follow Alex.Verylittle multiple POV.
* The rare death of a sympathetic character. (Sorry!) Plot armor is limited.
* No harem.
* Alex tries to be logical, but he's very human and not great at math.
* Good writing. Because I'm a good writer! But imperfect editing, because I'm trying to keep up the release rate.
* Nothing groundbreaking, storywise, but loads of fun!

Setting is good, interesting, I enjoy a lot when MC is fighting. Great dialogue, like watching movie.

- MozgovedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A really great book , I have nothing bad to say about it lol.
Isekai - well done
Magic - strange and we discover it with the MC together how it works
System - really strange in mysterious way
MC - likeable good guy
NPCs - some are really good
Enemies - nasty villains
Meta plot - save the world in a mysterious kind of way, we together with the MC have no idea how to do it.
Lore - mysterious quirks to how the world is made. World composition is part of the mystery.
All in all awesome book. - SolidstateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a very good story. The MC is a laid back guy, which gives it a lighter feel than many progression fantasy stories. The secondary characters are very strong, distinctive, and well written - but don't take over the narrative, which is a great balance. The writing is very good, with well written action and exploration.
The world is very creative, with numerous interesting species of intelligent creature, and I love the specialty of humans! The world being made up of floating islands gives a lot of room to expand and travel, letting the world open up if the story continues.
Thanks for the hard work on this! - Space253bRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Good balance of fantasy, comedy, and action. Unique powers and system without feeling forced for differences sake. Characters that feel like more than convenient plot devices. A world that you learn more about only when the character does, without feeling frustrating. This author has professional writing potential and this story is worth your time. 🤓
- hsteinvallRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I gave this a shot because I liked Meek. Turns out that this is way better than Meek was. Your loss if you don't give this a chance.
Mc seems relatable. Isekai formalities are handled smoothly and the retelling first-person perspective is chef's kiss.
Royal Road is a cool site but their minimum requirement on word count in reviews are meaningless and silly. - NicciNORoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5At first (the first 10 chapters) I wasn't quite sure. But I'm glad I kept on reading, 'cause the story and writing improved. I kind of like the MC, who feels human, fallable and not all-knowing, thus relatable - even though I disagree with some of his choices. That just makes it more interesting. The 'system' isn't be-all-end-all, but has a strong presence while not dominating everything. No overwhelming amount of skills, gazillion xp bars and counters, or whatever. Good. Also nice to see some (to me at least) new unique races and a somewhat different world setting from the usual.
A bit short chapters though, but that is made up for in release rate (for now).
I'm enjoying it so far and interested to see where this goes. Let's hope it doesn't spiral into yet another story where every fight is more over the top than the next. - VinRavenRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This is a pretty decent story in a rather unique setting, kudos for imagination all the way. The MC swings from totally inept to totally capable a bit too much, and the LitRPG elements are on the weak side, but overall it’s a fun read so far.
There are some rough spots where the MC makes you wanna drop it, but it’s worth sticking with to watch the world develop.
The editing is rather raw, so patience is needed to not overreact to the typos, missed words, and such, but those are all things which can be fixed by any half decent editor or good beta reader.
This story does come across as a first draft, as is common with many stories on RoyalRoad, but if nothing else it’s a great opportunity to enjoy an author’s creative process in real time.
I say give this one a shot, if for nothing else to encourage the creativity of an author who shows a ton of potential. - SterlingMalloryRoyal Road★★★ 3.0To keep this review brief: the story is relatively well written with the bones of a solid story, however the characterization of the main character is flawed.
The main character and his actions read like they were written with the sole purpose of being a snarky combatant, though one lost in the realm he was sent. The issues are that the actual decisions the MC makes, along with various sections of internal thought, are completely at odds with this characterization. Thus, he seems to vacillate between progression/Litrpg stereotypical MCs depending on the whims of the chapter rather than a cohesive character.
This phenomena comes to a head (for me) in a later chapter when he cannot understand the thought process behind using a captive as bait. It threw me out of the story completely. - ttsRoyal Road★★★ 2.5The premise and world building are pretty solid. Lots of thought clearly went into that part of things.
The problems all start and end with the MC.
Oh he starts off pretty realistically. The portrayal of him as a regular person, with no special cheats or previous knowledge, who gets transported to a magical world is pretty good too.
The problem is that he is T O T A L L Y not cut out for combat...and yet the author keeps forcing him into that over and over again very quickly. So, IOW, he has to save the MC quickly over and over again. He also very quickly, and unrealistically, has this process turn the MC into a bloodlusting battle junky.
On top of that he starts making the MC act like a idiot later in the story. And I don't mean making the occasional oopsy anyone could do. NO. We're talking sticking your hand in a blender while the blades are spinning because you think they're pretty levels of stupid.
To make matters even worse he has the MC not learn anything from these experiences...and just do the same schtick over and over.
If the author let the MC use more than half his brain, did a more realistic portrayal of his growth into a combatant, and stopped slapping in the plot armor this story would have real potential to be a 4 star story. Maybe more.
As is 2.5 stars feels generous but I did like the side characters and world building quite a bit.
