- CoffeeInMyDreamsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Apocalypse Trigger is a High Fantasy, OP reincarnation story that scratches that itch. It’s unlike many other stories on Royal Road that focus on the protagonist’s rise to power, be it through the use of a cheat skill, knowledge from another world, or an unfair blessing from the divine. This story follows the journey of an already-developed character as she navigates an unforgiving world, using her brain instead of her considerable brawn (the brawn being a comedic mechanism that sometimes tips the scales in her favor), to achieve her goals after a political fall from grace.
I believe this will be a banger for fans of the genre and many others who aren’t usually inclined to indulge in wish-fulfillment, OP power fantasies, as the story has quite a refreshing approach. I’ve read all available chapters (up to chapter 10), so I’ll break down my thoughts, as to why you should give it a go, according to Royal Road’s scoring criteria.
The author's style is refined and pleasing to the eye. It’s evident from the get-go that KeeperAbra has put in long hours honing their craft, as is reflected in the fact that they are able to express scenes as succinctly and engaging as they are. The prose is pleasantly smooth and creates an immersive experience; just the right amount of information about environments and descriptions is conveyed to guide your eyes comfortably through the story. Third-person omniscient is the narrative style of choice (with some perspective shifts), and it works perfectly to highlight moments of humor that would have otherwise been lost; as well as give the reader insight into happenings that characters would not have discerned due to the limits of perspective.
The story is wonderfully refreshing. With the foundation lain by the opening chapter, —which works very well to set the scene and provide a feeling of scale to the world— we follow the antics of our protagonist, who is a princess from a fallen noble family, as she toils to restore a fragmented empire. A - Traversing the DarkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At a glance: Apocalypse Trigger is at its heart a story about unfulfilled desire - and about guilt. It's an Isekai that uses the genre to explore these themes in detail.
Detailed review: The story follows Cadenza Mor, reincarnated warrior princess who unknowingly ushers in an apocalyptic flood of monsters in her new world. Cast out by the very people she swore to protect, Mor now vows to right the benighted world and restore her honor and name.
This premise works well to immediately hook us and have us root for Cadenza as a character. She's strong - mentally and physically - but needs to win back the love of her people. Its about reputation, not brute force, and that provides an interesting slant through which to view her actions and decisions.
Cadenza as a character is interesting too - polite as befits a princess, and battle hardened as befits a warrior, she stands out and we're on her side.
Other characters begin to follow her as the tale expands - my personal favorite being Floorboard, the magic imbued slave serving the princess. Its a good idea to bring out several different perspectives through which we can view both this grim world and Cadenza's actions, and Floorboard definitely provides that.
The style of the story is to be expected from a light-novel-esque Isekai: dialogue is mainly how we receive information about about the final bastion of humanity, the City of Blanco, slowly but surely. While this works well, it would be interesting to delve into the history of the place more through some dedicated backstory chapters.
Overall I'd recommend this ongoing story. There's a lot of room for development but the character work is the key defining trait. If you're interested in well conceived characters looking to right the sins of their past, you should pick this one up.
