- DorkamongusRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a very biased review for a friend. Even then, I think it's pretty good for a first solid effort. There's room for improvement, of course, But I think it's a solid start and a very interesting premise. Hawl is a good MC, with his personality (or lack thereof :D ) showing through well in his actions and words. Read it, give my buddy some good tips. I want to see this do well.
- corvin9550Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5The best comparison I can think of to your story is a book by the name of The Blood Jaguar, which is an amazing read. The initial hook is excellent, introducing Hawl as an emotionally repressed and traumatized wolf in a society that idolizes strength born from suffering. As someone who was reduced to stoicism and suppressing emotions as a defense mechanism, it really speaks to me. I hope to see more of Hawls internal struggle against showing emotion and vulnerability, and learning to open up. He has an amazing potential for character growth and the sections where he is the focus are definitely my favorite.
I would have to say that so far, Reea and Mauor are your weakest developed. Reea, mainly because she comes off as very shallow (intentional?) and only focused on sexual conquest. If her shallowness is intentional, I want to know why! I really would like there to be more depth to her character, but so far we don't even know too much about her political leanings, much less backstory and deeper motivations. I want to know the reasons why she is so focused on jumping from one relationship to the next. What happened in her life to make her like that? Does she feel remorse for breaking hearts? What is she really looking for? How/why did she become a hunter? How did she get her Telling (this goes for the others, too)?
Mauor is mostly a background character so far, and we know so little about her so far that I kind of expect her to get killed in some fashion. She does have potential, and I really want to see how she develops, but narratively it might fit to have her come to an end that causes conflict/intrigue and thus reduce the characters to focus on?
Wouf is quite fun to read; his Telling brings forth a lot of questions that I hope to see answered eventually, but again, we don't know too much about him. I think its hinted that he has a family and potentially a mate, but it's not been explored more than that. His politics and bigotry contrasted by his pl
