The story is rich with detail, the characters are fleshed out and the plot is so much fun. Keep it up man!
- OlinoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is Letterly the GATE we wanted.
Real living people in the millitary, No 900 year old teenage goth lolies, Near Sci-Fi world, enemies who are alive and wont just charge straight in, acctual world building, Real history, even some moral choices.
Some grammar mistakes here and there but the author will fix them if you tell em.
Perfect in every way.
When I discovered this I was like on another GATE fanfic or replica but 7 chapters in it was clear that unlike GATE where Japan did zero attempts to save their people the US, hostile took over a trade city where their people were kept as slaves to save them.
Just perfect in every way Imaginable.
Did I mention this story takes place in 2050CE where. Although It does not have many sci-fi things that could be possible by then like caseless ammunition, It still has good amount of sci fi stuff. And I bet the author cares about this story as they completely researched everything they put into the story. And unlike GATE there are threats for the US forces like demons and magical monsters. ANY way Id recommend that you give it a try till chapter 11.
I am writing so much because advanced review wont allow me to post my review until it has two hundred words. - OmarzkieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Due to the author taken his time to finish his latest chapters, I reread the story from the start. Gone reading a lot of summoning and gate fan fics. I almost forgot the story of American Gate. All I can say, it's the best gate fanfic depicting 2050 US military so far.
- SoleranRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As another review says, this is basically GATE but the portal opened in New York City. There are many plots similarities between the two, but enough differences that make this new and refreshing. There's not a heavy emphasis on a single main character (and no harem!), the world is well thought out, and sci-fi tech adds a new dimension to the story that I personally like. The supernatural is also much more prevalent in this world, with magic spells and beasts being an actual threat to the mana-less Americans.
The earlier chapters are a bit rougher in writing than the later ones; it's nice to see the author improve. I particularly favor the removal of the wiki-style blurbs and integrating lore more directly into the story (show, don't tell). If the author wants to keep them, maybe have them written as in-world reports or summaries from the scientists or others? It could be neat seeing a news article trying to introduce a world of magic to the American public.
Also a personal take, but I like that this avoids GATE's sexual assault tropes.
If this story interests you, definitely give it a read up to chapter 11. I'm looking forward to more! - TasrielRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5While the earlier chapters do have some minor issues, the story as a whole is quite a good read.
While the title definitely shows what inspired the story, and some of the earlier happenings line up quite a bit with the GATE series, the similarities end after that.
While the Rontaks are predictably helpless against 2050s America (not that it's a bad thing; this kind of stuff is part of the appeal of GATE inspired stories), the local magical creatures pose an actual threat to the Americans, and give them a very good reason to seek out the magical resources and technology that the other world offers instead of simply bombing them to oblivion and leaving with their rescued citizens that the Rontaks kidnapped from their world.
Which leads me to one of the really great aspects of the story: The author's attention to world-building. A lot of thought is put into all the different aspects of the other world, as well as America, which is very welcome. The conflict between 2050s America and the other world is well thought out, and no interaction between the two powers happens without reason. The magic system is well thought out, and can also eventually be used to make some pretty nifty magitech. Not to mention the thought put into why the fantasy races (elves, dwarves, etc.) exist, which I won't get into due to spoilers :)
All in all, the story is a nice take on the "portal between two worlds" kind of isekai, and I look forward to when the author releases more chapters! :D - C-DogRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5American Gate simultaneously satisfies my itch for the GATE anime but at the same time does it's own unique world building and story.
My only complaint is that the fantasty races reactions to the American army are not explored enough. Some small talk or comments from the minatuar or centaur people would've went a long way, just being one of my examples. - Chris5GRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall a very good start to this story. It delivers what the title promises and is entertaining so far. I’m curious on how the military is going to handle the magical beast that are impervious to bullets as well as how the empire will manage to mount a resistance once the military gets serious.
- GreenSpace40Royal Road★★★★ 4.0It’s an okay story so far. Not super great but something to pass a half hour. Some of the scenes are a little out there with the number of American soldiers mentioned. The author should increase the number of soldiers sent through the portal and make it a joint service operation with unit/characters from most service branches like it would be in real life. The style is a little flat and there is too much tell and not enough show but I’ve seen way worse. The world building parts are great but should go in a chapter called world building or similar. It taking place in the future is cool and does make it slightly different from other gate influenced works. Overall, I would rate it a 4.0-4.1 so far.
- Because0789Royal Road★★★★ 4.0The story is decent and the writing is actually pretty good. That makes the author's insistence on info dumps at the beginning of nearly every chapter disappointing.
They treat it like a D&D campaign where the players would know about this stuff and/or the DM can't count on what the players do or what questions they will ask. This is a narrative story. You are the author. You get to decide how, when, and what to tell the reader. Not only that but this is a bunch of info the characters in the story don't have but now we the reader do. Info dumps like this are just lazy and actively hurt the reading experience. Just throwing information at the reader isn't real world building even if they call it that. - BudgiePRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5A fun GATE like story. Yes, the author avoids the tropes of the aforementioned tale, but the overall plot is still mirroring the events of the show so far, which leads me to believe it will have the same long term issues.
I applaud the authors efforts in creating an original world and near future technology for Earth Forces to employ.
Initially only the Marines are involved in military action, and it feels lonely without the rest of the Armed forces for a time. Strangely absent, given the existential nature of the alien threat, are America's NATO allies.
I'm not sure if the images I imagine in my mind in anyway match the author's intentions because the prose dedicated to describing the scenes that action takes place in is insufficient.
I don't know if such a large named cast of characters is needed. All the three dimensional characters so far are from the 'Empires' side, but that is OK. The Earth forces are all 2 dimensional characters so far.
