Adventurers' Guild Craftsman [Cozy/Cosy Crafting Fantasy]
Community Rating
Description
A cosy crafting story about a dwarf who works for an adventurers' guild. The good news is he's got a secure job where he gets to make cool things with his newly acquired master craftsman class. The bad news is, he's got amnesia. So, he's going to have to relearn a bunch of the stuff he once knew, but he's got friends and skills to help him along as he works it out. If you're a fan of cosy fantasy, or shows where people make or repair things, then hopefully you'll enjoy in this story. "My quiet blacksmith life in another world" was a big inspiration for this, as were a number of cosy fantasy or crafting stories on RR that I'm looking forward to sharing in the authors notes as I go along. This is my second ever story and I really appreciate any constructive feedback.

- Tori JonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The author of this neat little story has chosen the nym of Strictly Worse, because he says that he became convinced he could do at least as well as the worst stories he'd read here. I'd say he's definitely above average among the web-fictions I've read.
In a lot of ways even though I'm reviewing this at the last chapter the author has posted, I still feel like the author is just starting to get the tale underway. With that statement in mind if you're looking for a fast moving adventure this story definitely isn't for you.
This story is about a craftsman who is suffering a case of amnesia due to a magical accident or perhaps overextending his magical ability, so he is doing things as he goes along on what might be called hidden knowledge, that is that he recognizes that he understands the process he is doing, but he doesn't always recall learning the original process and sometimes he is almost relearning his abilities by experimentation. Thus he doesn't know what he can or can't do. - ZebraUnicornRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style:
Strictly Worse is aiming for a cozy fantasy vibe with this story. And overall, I would say that they have managed to achieve that.
There is a certain comfort to be found in reading about the vividly detailed workflow of the MC's day to day. Right from the first chapter, it is clear that a lot of thought had been put in to the 'crafting' aspect of the story. Which is important since the story is called Adventurer's Guild's Craftman.
So in that sense, the core tenet of the work is firmly established.
The fantasy elements of the story is also quite pronounced as well, with your usual fantasy troupes in play, but with sufficient depth as to not feel generic.
Where it falls short however, is in presentation. Strictly Worse has a penchant for extremely dense paragraphing, which makes for a very uncomfortable read on mobile devices where I tend to consume my fiction.
This wouldn't really be a problem were it an average high-fantasy story or if this was on paperback where such a formatting is more commonly seen. But for a story aspiring to be 'cozy', this is becomes a real sticking point.
It's a quick fix though, since the writing is good enough that one could easily just go in and separate the longer paragraphs into more easily digestible chunks.
Grammar:
There's not much to say here other than the grammar being generally immaculate. Or at the very least, I didn't spot any obvious mistakes during my readthrough of the story.
Overall, I also like the wide breadth of vocabulary being employed in the writing of the story without it feeling too pretentious as a lot of fantasy stories tend to be.
Story:
Right off the bat, it was clear that a lot of thought was put into the worldbuilding aspect of this fiction. One can easily sense the yet unrevealed depths of the planning that was involved in the crafting of this world, even if the scope of the story is somewhat confined to the vicinity of the Adventurer Guild for now.
It is unfortunate then that most details are deliver
