- 0_Dark CrowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reading till chapter 27, have to say that I am loving it.
A beautifully written, emotionally rich take on the tower progression genre. It stands out for its introspective style, strong character work, and storytelling.
Anilith, the MC, is a refreshing change—strong, grounded, and deeply human. Her journey, especially her bond with other characters, adds real heart to the story. The worldbuilding is deep and subtle, with a Tower full of mystery and meaning rather than just power-ups and stats.
The writing leans a bit poetic and literary, which might not be for everyone, but if you enjoy thoughtful prose and meaningful progression, this story rewards your patience.
There is action, and when it hits, it hits hard—but this isn’t a nonstop fight fest. It’s more about tension, choices, and the internal battles as much as the external ones. That said, when combat happens, it’s exciting, grounded, and well-choreographed.
Don’t expect stat blocks or shallow wish-fulfillment. This is about growth—the kind that happens slowly, painfully, and meaningfully.
So, ultimately, I have to say it is highly recommended for readers who want character-driven fantasy with long-term vision and emotional depth. If you're tired of hollow grind fics and want something that sticks with you, give A Legacy of Blades a shot. I’m all in.
5/5 - Brunzy90Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Want a story that will have you going "just one more chapter" until that nighttime read turns into the sun cresting the horizon with birds chirping as you question your life choices? Then this read is for you.
The characters are well written with banter that will leave ya chuckling. The story itself is interesting enough to really pull you in. The sections that seem to depart from.the main story are included for good reason, they hold information and clues not just fluffing the word count.
Definitely one of my favorite stories I've found on RR. *fades to black with cries of MOAR* - Damien SilverblightRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Where do I even begin? Well, first of all, if you're not sure about reading this, do yourself a favor and do it! What the author has written here is really something special and I've enjoyed every moment with it.
Style:
To say I felt immersed in the world of A Legacy of Blades would be an understatement: I felt like I was right there with Anilith and her family preparing to leave for their long journey, like I was there at the ancient holy grounds, and finally, when Anilith was transported into the tower. I could hear, feel, and see everything Anilith did in vivid detail, which was a treat.
Grammar:
I typically don't pay much attention to grammar as, as long as it's not egregious, it doesn't take me out of the story.
Story:
Everything from the Tower itself to the mysterious past of this fractured world, A Legacy of Blades promises a deep and compelling story with much more to discover than what appears on the surface. There is quite a large twist in chapter 7 that I honestly didn't see coming, and if that's only a taste of what's to come, then I am very excited to see what comes next.
Characters:
Easily the strongest part of the story. Anilith immediately endears herself as the main character, a loving older sister who has taken on the role of Mother, who seeks to prove herself worthy by taking on the challenges of the Tower and gaining the promised power within.
Easily my second favourite character is Olina, Anilith's little sister. Her few POVs we've gotten so far have been a gem, and she's incredibly endearing, just like her older sister. - Damon HarkerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0so far so good! really imaginative, unique yet familiar in all the best ways. picture painting is also really good, finding it easy to visualize the world in which we are reading about. fascinated to find out more about the world and what kind of perils exist within it!
There is a certain level of reflection I find in our own world with this story, and other stories like it. I believe we all have our own hero's journey, where we all strive to become the best versions of ourselves in order to triumph over life's obstacles. I believe that is delivered very well here, searching for glory and attaining new skills to improve not only our lives but the lives of our community. It is refreshing to have not only a female protagonist but a charming one at that! I like how there is plenty of room for the reader's imagination, because in the end isn't that what it's all about? I also find there are wonderful quotes that reflect truths in our world, such as children being "the warriors of hope". The future is always uncertain, and sometimes hope can be the greatest weapon to face it. After all it beats the alternative!
Also love the action, not too grotesque yet filled with excitement. Good old fashioned battle sequences! One small thing I think could be improved is a little more clarity in dialogue, sometimes I am not sure who is saying what. Also I appreciate that the little girl's viewpoints are askew due to her young age, but I think a little more definition could be used in order for the reader to have more of an understanding and avoid confusion. Like I said, very small but worth noting in the name of transparency!
The rapidity and consistency in your writing shows not only great dedication but real potential in the expansion of this wonderful universe, the sky is the limit for what can happen next which I believe is one of the best parts about reading and of course, writing! I have only high hopes for this story, keep up the great work! - DrThreeAMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A story wrapped in mystery with a beautiful history that is hinting at an even more grandiose plot, yet to be seen. Ancient ruins lost to the winds of time, lands fractured from cataclysm long smoothed away. Heroes and history remaining only in the minds of those dedicated to the passing of such important tales.
The story of Anilith, the apprentice Blade Weaver, begins with mystic wonder and a headstrong determination to protect her village and keep her loved ones safe, even if it costs her life and limb. Her family, her younger brother and sister, are the most important things to her, other than her blades. With a destiny greater than she can perceive, will she overcome the Trial?
I myself have only just began a small taste of the plot, but quickly find myself excited to read more. Each chapter leaves just enough taste that turns into a craving desire for more to come.
I'm finding elements from some of my favorite plot devices from other pieces of fantasy literature, ranging from The Wheel of Time to the Tales of Earthsea. Anyone that is curious about seeing the new great fantasy writers of our age and their humble beginnings, please, pay attention to this story.
With a consistent release schedule, and a clever mix of wit, this author will not waste your time. - Gogo737Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has been an intriguing introduction for me to the tower progression subgenre. Recently entering the world of Royal Road from a more traditional sci-fi and fantasy reading background, I found this story interesting in concept. No stat blocks or quibbles about points drag this story down, like other related subgenres.
The first several chapters of the story lay the groundwork for the deep, lived in world the characters inhabit. Hints of untold stories and treacherous, dramatic pasts show the author has really done their work with thoughtful worldbuilding.
The author's style does tend to wax poetic, especially in the earlier chapters, but there's a meaning to the words worth paying attention to. After these early chapters, the story really starts to pick up a s the tower element is introduced. Without spoiling anything not mentioned in the blurb, I saw the story as headed from the Scottish moors to a Tron-esque run, but high fantasy-themed, realm. No skill trees or XP interfere with the organic development of the main character, but instead solid storytelling and philosophical musings. Interesting, original character designs (especially Razhik) add exciting flavor to the interior world, hinting at mysteries of the true nature of the Tower.
This story is truly worth investing your time in. I'm quite interested to see where this goes! - MilcRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm loving this story. The buildup and the pacing are done very smoothly. I'm trying to think of something to compare it to, and all I'm coming up with is something like Wheel of Time. It has that feel of history and depth that puts it up alongside classics of the genre, imo.
There's an ensemble cast who are introduced in a gentle and natural way, while the focus remains close to the MC, who is a very engaging character. The side characters are all well fleshed out, and the pre-existing relationships, the quirks and nuances of human interaction that make a story feel alive, are all laid out in a subtle way that avoids info-dumping.
The style feels very high fantasy to me, thus far. There's clearly a deep world here with a rich history that is hinted at and teased. The prose is great, no complaints at all. Likewise, the grammar is very good.
One common issue for this kind of story is that introducing several characters so quickly can sometimes be a challenge. Having to learn more than a couple of new characters per chapter can often leave me a bit confused until I'm deeper into a story and know them all well. The author avoids this pitfall neatly. The characters all come through as distinct and well-realised right from the start.
Thoroughly recommend giving this one a go! - XenionRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There’s a natural rhythm to the way the characters and the story interact that genuinely tickles the right areas of my brain as I read. The pacing feels intentional, with each moment carefully designed to reveal just enough to keep you curious—but never too much to give anything away prematurely. The writing style is unique but still feels familiar, like a voice you somehow recognize even if you’ve never heard it before. It’s the kind of storytelling that feels like it was crafted by someone who deeply loves the art of writing and building worlds.
Every chapter that’s been released so far shows clear thought and planning. There’s a depth to the narrative that hints at long-term payoffs, and it makes you crave understanding—what’s really going on, why things are unfolding the way they are, and what might come next. Even with only a few chapters out, it’s obvious this is a story that’s been simmering for a while, and the author is serving it in exactly the right portions. If the consistency keeps up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see physical copies in bookstores someday soon. This is the kind of story that earns a place on the shelf. Definitely gaining a fan, and more on the way. - holisticallyFRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve enjoyed this story thus far. It has a heavy focus on introspection and emotional depth.
Style:
Cayl’s writing style leans towards literary and somewhat philosophical. He's able bring weight to every thought and moment, which gives the story a contemplative tone. Readers who enjoy introspective, almost poetic prose will find this appealing.
Characters:
Anilith is well-developed and emotionally grounded. She has a sense of honor and personal struggle which is genuine and believable. Secondary characters, however, are still lightly sketched as of the current chapters. They serve their roles but haven’t stood out yet.
Story:
The main narrative which is preparing for the Tower and facing past losses has real emotional stakes and is relatable. It avoids tropes of overpowered wish-fulfillment and instead aims for a more grounded take on progression.
Grammar:
Grammar and spelling are very clean, which makes the story easy to read. It feels a bit advanced grammar wise which I don’t dislike.
What I Liked:
Anilith is a compelling and serious protagonist with real emotional depth.
The world feels lived-in, especially the Tower system and its consequences.
The story isn’t afraid to slow down for reflection, which gives it a thoughtful tone.
What could be better:
The first few chapters can be a little slow as it’s setting up the plot and characters.
I got stuck on a few words in the first chapter, like I said it’s more advanced than some of the past things I’ve read.
Final Thoughts:
A Legacy of Blades is a deliberate, introspective fantasy for readers who appreciate character-driven storytelling over flashy progression. It’s well-written, polished, and promising. If you’re patient with slower starts and enjoy emotional weight in your fantasy, this one’s worth watching as it grows. - mermaidred31Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A Legacy of Blades is the first story I am reading and reviewing in this forum. The author is my son and although I have watched him write for years, I have not had the pleasure of reading his work. As a family, we have always loved the fantasy realm, so the idea that this book is fantasy, yet a world that could have been talked about among his siblings, brings me joy, knowing that a childhood dream and beyond is being realized.
Now, as a reviewer, I had a dificult time getting through the first chapter as it was heavily descriptive. Hunter Cayl has since rewritten that chapter and the flow of it is just wonderful now. The introduction of characters and their meaning to the story is front and center. We meet a main character in Anilith but she is concerned for her siblings first and once they are taken care of and she is satisfied with that care, she can then focus on what her task will be to help her people as a whole. We meet her in her land but she and her tribe move to the capitol as the Tower is calling for people from each tribe. She has been trained well with her blades, which we learn more of later in the story, and her trainer has great faith in her. She goes to the Tower and begins a new journey unlike anything she has ever experienced before. Without spoiling the story, because it is well worth reading, it is her time in the Tower that begins to shape her into a stronger warrior while making some unusual acquantances along the way.
Hunter Cayl's verbiage is something so unexpected in today's reading world. I was pleasanty surprised with how descriptive his writing is. For me this is reminiscent of Madeleine L"Engle in her "A Wrinkle in Time" series with very descriptive details being given. I do appreciatet the writing that makes me dig deep to remember what a certain word or phrase might mean,
The building throughout each chapter into the next is becoming so good. I will now wait until there are a couple of chapters to read and binge as I like to know wh
