OK well, apparently a lot of have a problem with it. Never fear, though! Our heroine has all the skills needed to deal with ruffians, ne'er-do-wells, and louts all while the young lady in her care is none the wiser.
This short story is action packed and will leave you wanting for more! - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not the longest of stories on this site but it certainly makes up for the length with quality. The style might not be out of the world but the initial premise hooks the reader more than enough. I honestly can't say I've read much like this before. 5/5. Quick read that's highly recommended.
- ElvenDenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, I have to say that I got exactly what I expected from the story according to its description. I am satisfied.
However, it seems to me somewhat strange that in this world exist such a large number of mercenaries who have lived for so long, despite all their lemming habits.
And remember, children, it will not be a war crime if:
—they weren't military;
—you left no traces and no witnesses;
—you shouldn't have allowed the young mistress to notice anything. - Fost_NZRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The world building that went into a short (5 chapter) story was amazing. Great read, fast paced with a few twists and "that's original" moments. The descriptive writing is good enough you can just see the action and locations in your mind. The LitRPG elements just work for story the author is telling and don't interrupt the story's flow with huge information dumps.
Highly recommend - only disappointment is that there isn't more. - MK bk-201Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Maids and assassins have similar jobs, which is to take out the trash, a combat maid its the same as a regular maid, she just takes a more... direct approach, alongside the usual maid duties of course.
Its a fun story and the typical litrpg tropes are very nicely done. - Baaraa88Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I loved this short story, the skills were innovative and the POV of an expert murderous maid was very enjoyable! It does get pretty gorey, but it's also strangely charming in both the characterization of the mc and in the writing style. I've binged the author's "sequel" Maid to Kill, as now I need more combat servant stories.
- emily_mccoshRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This was such a fun little story I got to read in one sitting! I love Fran and her calm and collected attitude as she deals with all sorts of problems to ensure her charge has a pleasant day. The system skills were incredibly interesting and used in such unique and fun ways. I hope the author writes more about this character!
- PxanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Quick and good enjoyable story. I am very happy that the author decided to continue this style of writing into Maid to kill. It's a quick, short and comical read. The abilities are used in imaginative and innovative ways. And the author clearly knows what she is doing. Go check it out.
- Temaki-donoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A Day in the Life of a [Combat Maid] is a fun and interesting story. Its short length and quick pace ensure it is never boring.
There isn't much depth to it, but there's plenty of action and humour. It is written in zechamp's usual charming style, which by itself is a big selling point.
All in all, I heartily reccomend it! - NaroToastRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Opening.
This is a fun, engaging story with a liberal side of violence and mayhem. If that’s your thing, then stop reading this right now and finish the story first!!
Story.
The premise of this story is simple but great: maid protects young girl by increasingly destructive and creative means. Short stories don’t have room to overexplain and this story knows it, focusing on the characters and events around them without spending too much time on worldbuilding. I did wonder how realistic the utter death and destruction was in the city was – Ch6 made me wonder just how much property damage can be fixed overnight – but hey, there's literal magic in this place, they'll work it out somehow!
Style.
The story has great pacing. Each chapter is a self-contained part of Francesca’s day, which makes it simple and fun to follow, as well as letting readers drop in and out (if for some reason they’re not reading a short story in one sitting…) The opening few paragraphs of the story had a lot of worldbuilding, which I’d personally remove then sprinkle across the story as it becomes relevant – but I know that some people prefer upfront exposition so it’s not a huge issue. I especially enjoyed the escalation of events from chapter to chapter.
Grammar.
The grammar is decent overall, though I spotted a few errors here and there, mostly in the first two chapters of the story. One thing that grated on me was just how many adverbs there, which I found interrupted the flow of an otherwise great story. One example from Ch3 is
“Francesca had naturally had to launder the jacket quite a few times…”
Throwing out the adverb makes the sentence flow better. I tend to read my own writing out loud to sense out whether it sounds right, or I ask someone to read it over then yell at me. Whatever works best.
Characters.
Francesca is awesome and I’d buy her a drink at a bar. Though maybe she’d kill me the second I offered it to her. The author nails her characterisation as someone who’s simultaneously tal
