The blurb gives the plot to the reader and the story is a straightforward take that feels like a mix of a fairy tale and a romance novel, the twists and turns are obvious and in case the reader is not paying attention the narrative seems intent on repeating itself. The character development is fairly shallow, and it has a number of tropes that lay it out like a road map. The issue of Gloomroot and Cinderblossoms pose an issue that questions the actual structure of the plot and of Emily's orders. It was good, but telegraphed itself and used romance-like dialogue while keeping out of the character's thoughts at critical moments and relying on passive narration to carry it forward.
