Description

The Long Winter has ended. The Great Spirits are waking once more and their influence is already making a mark on the world.

Enter Gord. The seventh son of the chief of the Ashwalkers, he's a bit of a disappointment. Not very tall, not very strong, not very fast. His brothers pick up his slack of course, they love him. But even they can't stop the whispers.

Troubled by a power he doesn't understand, he finds refuge in the stories his grandfather tells, of apocalyptic wars between spirits and powerful shamans wielding the forces of nature. Of course, those are just stories of an age long past. The spirits are peaceful now, right? [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

First off, this has a similar vibe to the "Clan of the Cave Bear" only this time we have magic, spirits, and shamans. I enjoyed the "ancient" feeling of the setting, and I kinda wish there was more of it, lol
The opening chapter is of Fika and the death of her fellow shamans. It happens brutally and abruptly, but when I love is that we get to see a mischief spirit in action. Fika asks the spirit to help her out, but since its a creature of tricks, it kinda gets her in trouble, and then later makes her invisible (almost like its donking with everyone involved, lol). It was a great way to introduce the spirits and characters, and I loved the ability to see them clearly in my mind.
Later, we get to meet Gord and learn more about godmarked, including dream sequences with him speaking to his patron god. I thought that was interesting, and I can't wait to see more of it in the story. He also gets a "deformed bird" named Sleepy (who I think might be a dragon or a quatl? Something cool, for sure.)
The grammar was a little choppy, but not too bad. It never dragged me out of the story, but I didn't think a few word choices were questionable (and some names were too similar for my liking) but overall, it flowed really well!
The characters were definitely fun, and I want Fika to get revenge, for sure. It's too early in the plot to see if it happens, but I definitely want to see it.
Overall, if you like fantasy (or Clan of the Cave Bear) I'd give this whirl, for sure!

First of all, story, I really love what you did with the prologue. It gave me lots of questions, but also not too much that it was confusing. They're also just the right questions that would make me want to stay for more chapters. I loved how you mixed in the mystery of this new world and made us question how everything worked while also introducing some rules without being too infodump-y. I love the overall pace of the story, not too slow it's boring, but not too fast it's overwhelming.
Now, the Grammar. I can't really see any mistakes to be honest. Though, I do suggest using Oxford commas, they make things easier to read and series of things flow better. That's about it.
I think the chapters are a tad bit too long, but I don't know if that's just me. That said they're not too long to be boring, I love the length, it's just that it kind of takes a bit more time than usual to flip a page. That necessarily isn't a bad thing, but there are some readers that might prefer shorter chapters to finish chapters better and reduce the time they wait for new chapters to come out. Though still five stars since I personally like the length.
Characters, huh, let's talk about that now. Well, all I can say is, I love Gord and I want him to marry me.
Just kidding, well, not really, but still. Anyway, I do love how the characters interact, it isn't stiff, the conversations flow well, and you can feel their bonds through the dialogue. It's nice, Gord and Cad's interactions remind me of my own sibling relationships, it's like they're actually blood-related with how close they are. It's cute.
Overall it's a nice book, it's still starting so I can't really judge it very well yet, but I think it has an interesting plot and great writing, so as long as the author keeps up the great work. It'll be super amazing!

I will start off by saying, wow, I love this! There are so many tidbits of foreshadowing and the characters feel real, I can't wait to read more!
Story & Style: The premise is engaging with the promise of an amazing story. So far, the plot's pacing is fluid, with good actions scenes and plenty of tension. Dialogue between characters feels real, and the author's choice of names is refreshing. Both titles and character names fit with the time, which is an insignificant detail I am most grateful for. It is one more reason readers can lose themselves in the writing and enjoy the story.
Grammar: Very few mistakes, none of which impact readablity or flow, and considering the author is attempting to reach the first Writathon goal, completely understandable.
Characters: The characters are fleshed out well and not cardboard cutouts. Gord is likeable as a main character, and his interactions with Cad made me laugh. Introducing a yet unnamed "Blondie" promises more plot development and a possible rival? Kudos to the author! I instantly dislike him and foresee plenty of posturing in the future. A duel between them would be interesting to see, but I am pleased to finally see a main character who knows his limits and doesn't just charge into a fight knowing he will lose. Sleepy is adorable. I love her, and I feel as though she is going to get big, quickly.
Overall, this fiction has caught my attention hook, line, and sinker. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a well-written story filled with excellent characters, interesting plot, and, of course, a refreshing take on magic and sort-of familiars.

Overall - I had an absolute blast reading this. Like one of the previous reviewers mentioned there is a strong reminiscence to ‘Clan of the Cave Bear’, a series I adore. It is well paced and the characters shine through.
Style - The author has a great way of creating tension through visual and auditory cues. What I have read so far is a great example of ‘ show, don’t tell’. There is a strong creative voice and the dialogue flows well to create a sense of real people speaking.
Story - There is a captivating world being built here and its exciting to experience it. It’s difficult to assess exactly where the story is going to go from here but I’m excited to find out more.
Grammar - There are a few syntax and grammar errors that creep into the story, but for a Writathon creation I’m very impressed at the quality of the editing.
Character - Gord feels fully fleshed out and has a great depth to him. There are a number of small things, like his rock collection or the internal monologues, that help him to stick in the readers memory.  Some of the supporting cast feel a little less realized, but they do help to move the narrative along.
