- Hawk2Royal Road★★★ 2.5I'm giving an average score because the writing drove me away on the first few pages. It could get better and it would be unfair to review it lower as a result.
The flow felt a bit jarring and the word usage repetitive. I love to immerse myself in a story but I truly didn't find myself being sucked into the world contained in the pages.
I hope you keep writing and I hope you use the feedback to hone your craft. - Strictly WorseRoyal Road★★★ 2.5This is what it sets out to be, a slice of life, harem story in a fantasy setting. It leans extremely heavily on the wish fulfilment end of the spectrum rather than realism. Notably while sexual content is refered to and implied the story fades to black on these scenes.
The writing itself feels quite rough around the edges but is far from unreadable and improves somewhat as the book goes on. There are some spelling and grammar issues but not to the extent I was thrown out of the story. The dialogue is what really feels off, I appreciate that the MC in particular is supposed to to be quite direct, but much of the dialogue feels more like a synopsis of what a character is trying to convey than something someone would actually say. I will also add that the way the paragraphs were broken up, particularly when a large block of speech is included, felt a bit odd and hard to follow to me, but that could be a tech issue or just me being wrong about how paragraphs should be broken up.
One thing the story does very well is keep the pace up. The story is told over the course of years but with a few regular events each year generally being the focus. This helps a lot with the sense of progression particularly as the combat system takes a while to really become relevant. I will also add that while there is a magic system of sorts it's more a marker of progress than a deep system so if you're looking for a book with a unique magic system to get invested in this isn't it. The combat descriptions themselves are pretty good if a bit repetitive at times, but for their place in the story I think that's probably better than them all being wildly different.
A lot of the political stuff doesn't really work for me, I think because it wants to be taken fairly seriously while it brushes against the absurdism of the harem. This might just be a bugbear for me though.
Overall while I think there's a fair bit of room for this to be polished I think there's definitely something here to like if y - hankRoyal Road★★ 2.0This started off very intersting as a story, but it's is showing signs of being another harem fantasy which isn't to my taste, so I dropped it. so far nothing that needs any content tags, but I don't see how that can continue. if you like that type of story maybe this is for you?
Unfortunately, even though the story seems good, the writing is terrible. Way too much 'tell instead of show. You can quickly skim through whole chapters and miss nothing. Even the best chapters only need you to read maybe a third, the rest should be skipped.
If the author wishes to keep writing, hiring an editor is a must. with the ability to have a good story I hope he does, so long as he doesn't devolve into harem fantasy .
