To save his life, the mages change his class toWorm—a class nobody in the outside world knows anything about. Now, armed with a set of reality-warping mutations and abilities, Sparrow must gather information, learn the mages’ techniques, and accumulate as much power as he can before returning to his army. If he can do that, humanity may just be able to turn the tides against the Swarm.

- mariodsi05Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The world building in this story is wonderful and so far is one of the best I've seen. The writing quality and Grammer in this story are also solid. This story really makes me understand the main character, I think the character writing so far is wonderful and it'll be hard to wait for for. This is the first story I've read from the author and this story has made me want to read to more of their works.
- LamoronRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The sheer brutal reality of war, set in a messed up world of monsters and child soldiers.
There's a few weird things that are never really explained, but it still feels like there's a reason for them behind the scenes, so I'll forgive it.
This story is not for the faint of heart, though the trauma is mostly mental. There's not a lot of gore (there IS some), but the deaths have so much impact.
Real world 7.5/10, and a RR 5 for sure.
I started with Storm Strider Book 1 then just HAD to come get the backstory of what seemed to be an incredibly important background character. I proceeded to read all of Worm Mage in a single day. It was so addicting that I just couldn't put it down! The story was so well paced and streamlined, the characters were all fascinating, and I just never quite sure what was going to happen next. A perfect origin story for an incredible character who I hope we get to learn even more about through the series.
Breakdown:
Style: The style is a perfectly balanced combination of "telling" through Sparrow's internal thoughts and a "showing" through his actions and those of the other characters. There are a few point of view changes that give insights into other ways of thinking, which adds a ton of passive depth to world.
Story: The pacing was incredible. As I said, I felt compelled to read it all in one go because I just couldn't find a spot to set it down without NEEDING to know what happened next, even at the end of each arc. The story was streamlined without any bloat to interrupt the flow and was EXACTLY the right length for an origin story.
Grammar: This should be a very comfortable read for anyone teen and above, even those who aren't voracious readers. No fancy words just for the sake of it. There were only a few tiny mistakes and I can't even remember where they are exactly. I think one was a "be" instead of a "he."
Character: Absolutely incredible cast of characters. The main character, Sparrow starts off almost machine-like and goes through a slow return to more human emotions. Throw in the other Worm Mages (and another surprise character!) and various characters from the Empire's army, and you get an incredible breadth of world views and moral stances. - YohaoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: I was not a Beta Read for this story. I just liked it so much I took some time to say how much I appreciate it.
I'm simply in love with this story and absolutely devastated that it's so close to ending.
The characters are very well written, each of the main characters has a subtle but noticeable exploration of their psyche and motives, including "villains". The emotional complexity on this series is simply phenomenal. I never cried so much during a binge read session.
The world is incredibly well explored, tho on this particular case we are mostly focused on a single region, but the quick mentions of other regions and people already show how defined the world around is and how deep it might go.
For grammar just some minor mistakes here and there but nothing that actually affects the reading negatively.
We mostly Follow "Sparrow"'s PoV but in some certain scenes we get different points of view that, in my opinion, greatly enhances the reading experience
Like for real, getting the Vice-General's PoV when Sparrow's attacking their outpost was peak different PoV use.
This story is so close to the end but I think there's still so much to be explored and possible twists, for all of our peace of mind at least this story is part of a whole world the author is exploring in other series too so we can all remain hopeful of seeing our beloved characters appearing down the line.
Also the strongest piece of this book: Worm Facts ! Worm Facts are great and everyone should definitely read them !!!
Thanks a lot for writing such an incredible story, Maradina !!! - aceyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Maradina has done it again! This new story is absolutely insane. From worldbuilding to character development to prose and overall storytelling, the author has crafted a harrowing, apocalyptic world overrun by giant, insectile monstrosities. The main character is cunning, motivated, actually has morals, and basically checks off all the boxes for a to-be-OP-MC.
Even better, his current progression feels earned, and despite the story having litrpg elements, the author doesn't overdo it in terms of stats and system shenanigans. The system feels like an important part of the characters' progression, but it doesn't overshadow the characters' personal efforts and hardships.
Considering this is a prequel to The Unmaker, and featuring the strongest character from The Unmaker, I'm super excited to read the rest of this story. - ScorpionMageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Great story so far, it has been very interesting and the story flows well. The system is interesting, in a good way. Gaining system points to put towards Teiring up or leveling up stats or to gain more skills come from eating bugs/monsters. I don't know what else to say without giving away the storyline or spoilers. It's a good LN and worth reading.
- GoobieRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really enjoy the mid to slow pace that this story is taking. MC is taking his time to learn and slowly but surely change from being a drone to being a ?human?. I feel many stories would try and rush the change. Of course, im sure the pace is going to speed up gradually, but the nlow start is nice
- QuintifyRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I'm sorry and it's probably just me, but I find the intentions of the characters confusing. Like for example
Why is sparrow hellbent on escaping and returning to the army even after having taken stock of his situation. He's clearly being treated well, I'd say a little too well. Like, why would the mages give him the last core they have if it was so important to the village. I just find it odd how they are so benevolent to some random stranger they've found on the battlefield, that they'd go lengths to heal him, give him stuff and even as far as teach him their magic.
It is admittedly a very cynical view of the characters, but none of the story thus far has given clear indication as to why the've acted the way they did aside maybe Sparrow's background and the orders he was given.
I was really rooting for Sparrow at first, but I'm not quite sure how I feel about how the story is going at the moment. I will have to drop it for now, but I hope to revisit it in the future. - Lyly anRoyal Road★★★ 3.0Reviewed at: Chapter 50- Worm Mage
This was an addicting read, good storyline but terrible ending.
Powerful characters whose powere has been emphasized so many times all wiped out
And empire that sends it's children to die while adults stay at home
Thousands of soldiers killed needlessly, how does the Empire retain it's population ?
Smart characters that knows just how to not being killed making the most stupid mistakes
