- SleepingdragoonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: If you like shounen series, lead characters with strong psyches but somewhat questionable morals, superpowers, and 'ordinary underdog' stories, you will have a good chance of liking this. The main character, Rin, is born without powers in a family who all have powers, and because of that, she wants to prove she's strong. Long story short, to even hope to compete with those with powers, she is forced to enter criminality. A word of caution, however. If you like underdog stories about people without power fighting powerful people, this is more like My Hero Academia than Batman. Still, the story is self-aware of that fact and makes it blend with the story's themes pretty well.
- (the stuff that needs work)
Style: There are constant paragraph breaks(most notably in the first chapter). I got used to it over time, but I still prefer a normal style with normal-sized paragraphs. The author also needs to work down on cutting unnecessary words. The narrator also overexplains things often, often saying 'as you know' phrases to start the explanations.
Grammar: The grammar is consistently bad, and the author isn't very good at using plural words, but it rarely hinders your ability to understand what the story is saying. It can, however, break immersion during more emotional times.
Story: The story is fine, but so far, things don't seem linked together well. When I first read the prologue, I expected her supportive siblings to be key supporting cast, but they haven't been mentioned since they were introduced. I liked them, so it disappointed me not to see them again. I think the story is just a little too meandering at this point, though. For example, the criminal group she's in tries to raid a military type of base, apparently because they needed money, but I never caught why doing that would get them money. Almost all of the story threads up until chapter 8 or so have been put off for later. I'm sure it will return, but it makes Rin's life feel irrelevant, and as I'll - MilandaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'm rather surprised that no ones reviewed yet so let me be the first.
First is the con. The main con is in spelling and grammatical errors; honestly it's the only flaw that jumps to mind. It's noticeable often a misspelled word in a major point or tense that stands out. That said it's also no bad translation tier; so it's something easily dealt with.
Pros; Rin as a character is absolutely fascinating and the story is interesting. I'm worried about giving spoilers so even if I try to keep it limited I'll spoiler it.
Rin is a traditional protagonist; skilled, smart and stands well above others. Normally she would have no problem able to defeat half a dozen men while injured except for the world consisting of Elites. Power users that make her above average at best with a massive inferiority complex.
Its fascinating to see someone willing to sacrifice everything to climb that final plateau because of the insecurities left by a toxic family. The secondary characters are rather interesting too albeit I absolutely adore Ursa (whose name I may have misspelled; sorry). There are still a lot of questions and hesitation about what comes next but I for one look forward to the reveal of her singularity.
There ya go. If you like modern superhero esque stories, I'd definitely recommend it.
