- Kire256Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0As an ardent fan of LitRPGs, "When to Fight" stands out as a departure from the usual fantasy tropes. From the onset, we are thrust into Rick's world, a man with a mysterious past, who finds himself unwittingly pulled into the underground realm of Rukus Online.
The narrative style is gripping, teasing out just enough information to whet one's appetite while not revealing everything at once. I found myself driven to keep reading just to see what happens next.
Character-wise, Rick is a mystery. Learning more about him and his relationship with his wife kept me on the edge of my seat.
In terms of grammar and style, the writing is polished, flowing smoothly and making for an effortless read. The game mechanics, a crucial element in any LitRPG, are well-thought-out and add layers of complexity to the narrative.
In conclusion, "When to Fight" is a great read for any fan of LitRPG stories. Whether you're a fan of action-packed battle royales or character-driven plots, this story is a must-read. Kudos to the the author for such a compelling tale. Here's hoping for more adventures in Rukus Online! - LacersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story had me hooked from the start! The author does a good job of piquing my interest by only revealing what I need to know, but leaving me wanting to know so much more. The characters are interesting. The game world feels familiar enough to be easy to dive into yet there are hidden surprises to keep me reading. I can't wait to know what becomes of Rick. Please keep writing!
- kanundraRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Opening.
First I’m going to say I’ve known Chet a long time, so finally getting to read this has been a pleasure because of that, and I know how hard he’s worked in the background on it and other pieces.
Story.
The story follows Rick in his life and it’s a life that most might have given up on, he’s in debt he’s working his ass off and he’s desperate to support and help the love of his life, his wife.
What happens is, he gets involved in a bit of an underground fight scene… this is Rukus Online, and it’s gritty, its dark and yet a fantastic change from the fantasy litrpg here because of it. The Mc, Rick really has a past he’d sooner forget, but really comes into its’ own here and of course it shows online, even if it’s not clear what he’s been through exactly. The life of he and his wife is tough, the outskirts of where they live, the area, all tough going.
Style/Grammar
The author’s style is one who knows how to write, but sometimes maybe not quite get what he wants across. Even as an editor I know there’s things that are glossed over we don’t see them anymore. I dropped a few pointers along the way. It’s a smooth read, the pacing is there, the character development and the world building. Just a little extra detail here and there, some thinking will polish this even further, I already know there's been a lot of thought put into this, and it does really show.
Characters.
What’s to say, Rick is a down to earth normal guy, he loves his wife, he works hard. His wife’s sick and he is doing everything he can to help pay for her meds, what more could you want out of a guy? His wife is also really fleshed out, she’s not just an add on for sympathy, she’s a kick ass woman in her own right, the more we learn of her and Rick the easier that is to see and feel for the two of them. His employer sometimes seems kinda cardboard at first, but then you get to see who he is, what he’s running and some of those around him too. Everyone has a huge role in this and in Rick’s future.
C - noctRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A surprisingly heartfelt take on a simulation-based genre! Although I'm no fan of the VR genre, this story draws you in and connects you to the characters in ways that will make you forget all about the simulated parts. The MC is an ex-fighter of some sort with all the baggage that comes with, just trying to make it in a world where violence is often not the answer... (Except, I'm assuming, in the simulated reality). The world itself is a more mature take on Cyberpunk that tempers the ultraviolence of such a world with humanity and real-feeling characters.
Although the characters aren't outright explained, enough is shown to make you feel their struggles, rather than simply be told about them--truly masterful. I found myself sympathizing with the plight of the mc and his wife within the first two chapters. The prose is a bit bumpy at the start (every paragraph is spoken, with seven breaks in each spoken statement for description) but quickly becomes fluent in a way that suggests long hours of practice, so don't let that turn you off! The descriptions aren't overly long, but still tell the story of this world in clear and vivid imagery.
Only downside is that we haven't seen much of the simulated reality at chapter four, but I'm expecting that to change in the near future! And looking forward to it. - raine.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: The story gives you a lot of questions and a lot of chances to guess what the answers are, and I absolutely love it. You're nearly playing detective with this terrible world wondering about things like the past of the characters or the actions they're taking. You'll definitely be hooked by this one.
The questions are the essential parts of the story, starting with 'who is Rick?' and when you get the answer you move on to 'what happened to Rick?' and then you move on to 'EXACTLY WHAT?' and you just keep getting these trails of incredibly well crafted and compelling characters who each seem to be distinctly different yet all work together to make a beautiful story.
Am I a mess here? Sorry, I can't really describe everything, so I'd personally suggest to just read the story whilst I move on to the quadra breakdown.
Grammar: Nearly flawless. Nothing much to say here. I personally didn't notice a single erorr.
Story: Also immaculately crafted. You can see the planning that is evident here, because the author has already prepared a significant quantity of words beforehand, you can see the threads of planning and foreshadowing connecting in delicate complexities that will reveal the completed story if you just keep reading.
Characters: As I've already mentioned, they are all individually incredibly compelling. The most stand-out character to me was Rick's wife, as she subverts the stereotype I intended to see later in the chapters.
Style: Pretty good, I was able to read without any problems and didn't notice any errors in style.
