- myoatbreadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Personally, I'm not an avid reader of supernatural stories involving vampires and werewolves, but this one has quite an enjoyable start! The story starts with our MC, Haru, waking up with a missing part of his memory and some abnormal symptoms, quite questionable for humans.
Style: The author writes simple prose, concise and to the point. It's a bit simple for my taste, but I do appreciate it way more than overly verbose sentences. The story plays out in limited third person POV, and so far, it is executed well and I never felt confused by the perspective while reading.
Grammar: Nothing crazy from what I read! Though I admit I wasn't looking with a magnifying glass (lol).
Story + Character: So far, we've been introduced to a few relevant characters aside from the MC, as well as the existence of other super natural species. I think this story definitely has good potential if executed well, and a lot is definitely waiting for our MC. He's still adapting right now, but I'm excited for his growth and adaptation of his new life as he's welcomed into the "family. Specifically, I would suggest the author include more of the MC actively making decisions or reacting to his situations; so far, many of his interacts occur with him in a passive position, so switching it around a bit can better flesh out his character and show his moral values, bringing him a step closer to the readers.
Overall, this story has great potential and I wish the author the best of luck on his writing journey :) - Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5I will say, this isn't my cup of tea but I have to say I have enjoyed the first two chapters. Normally I am not a big fan of the teenage main character but I liked this one!
Some nice hooks, supported with some good small details! I don't know why but I really like that the main character has comic books.
So far so good!
I happy to rate 4.5/5 - HWPerfidyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Story: The story follows a boy named Haru. He’s just an ordinary kid until his life is turned upside down by a certain incident. Great use for foreshadowing for the great reveal, you can see all the hints scattered throughout the narrative pointing towards the reveal that happens in later chapters. The story hasn’t progressed far enough for details about the other supernaturals but I’m curious to see more.
Style: Style feels smooth enough, and is comfortable to read. Dialogue feels a bit unnatural though, they don’t feel like something someone would realistically say, and the conversation ends in a few sentences each time. For example: “Are you cheating or something? You're too squirmy to be an athlete like me!”. It feels a bit odd that a bully would start something by comparing the victim to himself. Dialogue gets a lot better at chapter 6, feeling a lot more natural and fleshed out.
The author gives plot points in retrospect a lot, instead of letting the reader see how it happens. For example, what happened the night it all happened is kept from the reader till a side character brings it up. Of course, this could be to hide the truth of the matter, but I feel that a few vivid flashbacks could help to sell the authenticity of it more.
Personally feel that the story could use more descriptions. Descriptions for how the characters are feeling, descriptions for the environment etc.
Character: Character behaviour feels a bit unnatural and feels like you’re making them do things in favour of the plot. Characters get offended at the pettiest things, that feel way too petty even for kids. For example, in the first chapter, Haru asks Kana casually about a touchy subject, not seeming to have any reservations about hurting her feelings when asking. Then he shouts at her when she says she doesn’t want to talk about it. I know that this could be attributed to someone who can’t read the room, but still, the character’s actions and reactions feel unnatural.
Grammar: A few mistak - John HaffRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5In Haru we have a sympathetically drawn and likeable character within a nicely paced and well structured story. The authors strengths appear to be in the mystery elements of the story, particulary surrounding Haru's memory loss. Dialogue is good, which was reminiscent of classic Japanese anime like Dragonball. My only complaint is the use of descriptive words where they don't need to be. Sometimes simple is best.
I would like to encourage the author in writing his story and am sure the members of RR will want to do the same. Keep it up.
