Description

Jeremiah Bridge had it all. A clear path to becoming an inter-planar veterinarian, a life of privilege in Prima City, and the unwavering support of his brilliant sister, Sarah. But everything crumbles when Sarah, a renowned artificer and humanitarian, is framed as a villain and killed in disgrace. Branded by association and cast into the chaotic streets of Nexus — a world where magic, technology, and myth collide — Jeremiah is left with nothing but questions, grief, and a strange pendant pulsing with mysterious power. When the impossible happens and he is chosen by the System, Sarah’s final, unfinished masterpiece, It pulls him into a world of impossible creatures, cryptic bargains, and shadowed truths Sarah never shared. But the System doesn’t just promise power or survival; it’s a puzzle whose consequences ripple throughout his life, and possibly all of Nexus. There’s just one thing he can’t quite figure out… Why does it want him to open a pet shop? Now, armed with nothing but a stubborn will, his sister’s legacy, and a store he never asked for, Jeremiah must uncover the truth behind her death, survive the streets of Nexus, and unlock the true purpose of the System she left behind. All while trying to find a good home for some good boys. Because this isn’t just about pets or profit. This is a story about revenge. This is a story about grief and redemption. And most importantly, this is a story that might change the fate of the last bastion of life in a universe of Stagnation. ♛—————————♛ WHAT TO EXPECT ♛—————————♛ —This is a LitRPG novel set in an Urban Modern Fantasy setting, where you're just as likely to see Fae and Vampires riding the subway as you are to see Dragons and Superheros battling in the sky. —This is Old-school Pet Shop System in the same vein as some of the classics like"Gourmet of Another World", "Number One Dungeon Supplier", "The Innkeeper"and"Black Tech Internet Cafe System" —Due to the topics, this story is a slow burn. Things take a while to set up and some events will run multiple chapters. THAT SAID there's I've tried to balance the slower, slice of life/Management sections with the action scenes. If it feels like a slower scene is dragging on, expect some faster action soon. —I've tried to create a story with a more realistic deception of grief and the struggling of healing. Jeremiah doesn't begin the story in a good place, mentally or emotionally. He's going to lash out, make mistakes and probably annoy you some times. I know I got frustrated with him at points, and I wrote him! That said, this isn't JUST a story about a grieving, broken man with a chip on his shoulder. Its also a story about the journey we take to HEAL from that grief. He DOES get better. I promise. So please forgive his first impression. — The System is Fae-tech and the MC's primary abilities will be based on his bonded creatures, with some Fae powers mixed in. — Pet Shop focus! While the MC WILL have his own struggles, battles and adventures, the core of this story is the Pet Shop, and how it changes the environment and people around it. RELEASE SCHEDULE Day 1:8 Chapters, including the prologue. May 16th - July 1st:One chapter a day, with breaks on Sundays. July 2nd Onward:3 Chapters a week, on Monday - Thursday - Friday. I was afraid this would be a slapstick comedy, but I was wrong. It's insightful, with realistic, thinking, and well-thought-out characters, and surprisingly deep and touching moments. It does have humor, but it's witty.
The MC, Jeremiah is going through a very tough time, but he has more people in his corner than he realizes. I love Billy and the kids are awesome and others are there if he just looks around.
I'm looking forward to what the author surprises us with next!

I think this story is paced perfectly for what it is. The main character isn't learning quickly, but he is learning, and his struggle feels genuine. Billy is adorable. The rest of the characters all feel distinct and alive. There is a good blend of mystery and answers, and I like the Wyrd/Law storybuilding. The struggles feel like they will be worth it, like there is hope, and I appreciate that a lot.

If I could give this infinite stars I would. The pure emotion I've felt reading this is masterful.
This story, so far, is a story of loss and grief, but hope and beauty peak through as the story progresses. Like true grief, it's a process where sometimes progress reverses and is lost.
Join Jeremiah as his world shatters around him, and help comes from the most unlikely places and from the most otherworldly allies. Billy, the titular Kraken is just as adorable as the ads and book cover portray.
The story is a slow burn so far, but having just got into the action, it's well written and I plan on using it as a reference for how to treat grief in a story that I started last year. My emotions are rarely this vibrant, but the sincerity and care given to grief and it's effects, paired against silly humorous or warm heartfelt moments bring my feelings to the forefront of my mind.
Truly a wonderful story so far and I look forward to reading more about this wonderful duo and to see where they go from here. If it hasn't been clear from my above comments, I absolutely love this story

Cozy story so far; first few chapters is MC freaking out, followed by a found-family-ing and some quick power-ups. The setting is very interesting (though a little all over the place,) but there's cute animals, a stat screen, and a dragonfly-fairy version of Phil from Hercules, so I'm pretty happy.
I feel like stuff will pick up a bunch when some of the other named characters start having backstory arcs.

We Lease The Kraken! is one of those stories that sneaks up on you with how wholesome and surprisingly emotional it is. On the surface, it’s about a guy opening a magical pet shop, but underneath, it’s about grief, healing, and slowly rebuilding a life after everything falls apart.
Jeremiah, the main character, really grows on you. He starts off in a pretty rough place. His brilliant sister is framed and killed, and he’s thrown out of the life he knew. Then a mysterious System chooses him, and suddenly he’s running a pet shop filled with magical creatures, including an adorable baby kraken. Yes, it’s as cute as it sounds.
What I really liked is that Jeremiah isn’t magically “fixed” overnight. He struggles and grieves, but he’s also surrounded by people (and creatures) who help him pick up the pieces. There’s an ongoing mystery about his sister, her invention, and why so many people are being unusually helpful, which adds another layer to the story.
The pacing is solid, the world is fun and weird in the best way, and while there’s action, the real heart is in the character moments. If you like cozy, character-focused LitRPGs, give this one a shot.

A super refreshing take on the Lit RPG store genre. There is a system that exists for a reason and isn’t just a lucky spin of fate for the protagonist to have. It is well balanced with the world around it and fits into the story like a puzzle piece. The story itself is well paced. A nice balance of exposition, dialogue, and action.

I originally read a few conceptual chapters of this novel from the author as he had put a few chapters in his other works. I really enjoyed the concept and was sad that there was no actual novel to read. Finally it does exist and I can enjoy they story. I would say the story is very good, no shop as of yet but very close and a lot of world building has been done.

Listen, I don’t even know how to explain what We Lease the Kraken has done to me. This book has absolutely wrecked my standards in the best way. Like, I cannot — literally cannot — imagine a life where I didn’t get to read this. It’s what I’ve been chasing since I finished Astral Pet Store years ago and felt every other book after it was trying too hard or just didn’t hit. But this? This right here? It hits. It knows what it’s doing.
Now here’s the thing. I actually found this book a while back — maybe a month or so ago — and I saw the chapter count was still small. So I let it marinate. I do that with books that I know will be good. I let them sit like stew, because once I start, I need to binge it. And today, I finally said, “Let’s go.” Best decision ever. I binged it like someone who hadn’t eaten in days. Every chapter felt like a new discovery.
Let’s talk Jeremiah. I thought I’d be mad at him, like the author warned, but nah. I get it. He’s grieving hard. His one and only person — his sister — gone, taken out by a twisted system. She wasn’t even guilty. Just caught in something bigger. And he couldn’t stop it. Couldn’t fix it. That kind of helplessness makes you angry, confused, reckless — human. He’s not dumb. He’s hurting.
And then we meet Billy. A Kraken. Who is also... a literal child. I panicked at first — “Is he stuck with a water monster forever?” But no — Billy’s a sweet, curious little sea creature with heavy nepo baby energy. The ocean loves him. His mom? Yeah... we should all be afraid. She’s from another dimension. Not a “boss level” threat — more like, “Why are you even trying?” The world’s powerhouses don’t want her attention. Period.
I still don’t fully understand why the neighbor (whose name I forgot, sorry!) handed Billy to Jeremiah, but it didn’t feel shady. More like, “Here, take this small, adorable eldritch sea baby and good luck.” I trust the vibes. For now.
Mero, the system guide — a Fae, no less — had me instantly suspicious. Too smug. Bu

I am a fan of urban fantasy, superheroes, and system/shop building stories. Though never have I really read a story that contained all three of those elements together. So when I read the description that this story would have all of those tropes, I was naturally intrigued. And to my surprise the world doesn’t feel disjointed or too busy by containing all those elements. Yes, there are superheroes with technological powers, magical creatures like Krakens, and various fae, yet having so many different elements doesn’t make the story feel conflicting nor too busy. Even the grammar and sentence structure are well crafted and don’t feel too busy. It is not the equivalent of some rushed random fan fiction knock off but rather is its own well written story. Like puzzle pieces, these vastly different parts fit together to form a unique whole which slowly draws readers into the story, eager to explore this intricate world.
“We Lease The Kraken!” has a uniquely diverse, yet unified style that draws the reader in. As mentioned above, this story has a bunch of elements added together yet instead of a hodgepodge, it feels like a unified world/society thanks to some important story choices that serve as key pillars. While the author implies there is this vast world with numerous races, creatures, powers, technologies, and abilities, he quickly introduces certain themes/concepts in an effort to cut through inherent complexities of having such a variety. Some of these themes are world-building expositional elements, like having five classifications of powers to serve as an overarching framework. This allows the author to get creative with powers ranging from advanced robotics to body transformations to the mystical magic of fae names. By setting that limit, the author can get creative with the powers and races, yet the reader doesn’t feel like it is out of place because they know it will fit into the five classifications previously defined instead of something randomly thrown in.

The story so far has been enjoyable if a little long to pick up, it has an interesting concept and has great potential. There aren't many obvious grammatical errors to me and the prose is pretty good. I'm excited to see where this story goes and hope you give it a try!
