- LunaSeaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Where do I start? Firstly, I was so absorbed by the incredible world and characters that I lost track of time and almost forgot I had something on the stove - that's how arresting, powerful, hypnotic, entrancing, and seductive this story is.
Style:
Perfect. Not only does the author not once bog the reader down with droning exposition, every single word only serves as the stroke of a genius painter's brush, bringing to life beautifully dark and real world, characters, and plot. Everything - down to the font choice - serves to enhance the reader's experience, so take this as fair warning: don't have anything you actually need to be doing when you start this story.
Story:
I'm still reeling and digesting everything I've read, so beyond "intriguing", "fascinating", and "soul-crushingly masterful", I'm afraid I can't think of any other words to use to describe this story. Even though I'm writing this review at Chapter 12, the fact is that each chapter has brought with it new angles and whispers. It's a wonderfully vast and intricate world that Tseer has built and is building, and the plot is being fleshed out carefully and teasingly, so as to leave you constantly wanting more.
Grammar:
For the life of me, I couldn't find a single mistake.
Character:
Each character we're introduced to has their own unique disposition. I have my favorites, of course (and I'm already shipping two in particular) but that's not to say any other individual in this story is just fodder. They're masterfully crafted and brought to life with Tseer's words, and I honestly felt like I was dealing with people I know in real life when I was reading this.
Conclusion:
Read. This. Now. - Writer's ScienceRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really like this story, I want to see where it's headed and will be reading more of it, but I feel it's lacking in worldbuilding and description.
The characters are well written and each character has a different voice and mannerism which is good, but I struggled to understand the social ettiquette and expections and norms of this world which meant I had a hard time understanding the actions and reactions of the surrounding characters. Since this is a fantasy world, we as readers, come in knowing nothing and it would be good if there was more detail. This being said, this is more of an issue for Iscah's chapters than it is for Apoch's.
Apoch's chapters are well described and thought out wherea's, with Iscah's I'm left wondering about a lot of the details, like, Isach's sister hands her a blue dress. What kind of dress? we're told it has a bodice and it's a but frilly, but that still leaves a lot of variation and options that doesn't ground the reader in a particular timeperiod or mix of one which would help us understand what the social norm's might be. Like: are we more in a medieval social arrangement or a victorian? Chapter 3 would be particularly important for this, but we're not given many environmental cues.
To give another example: there's a conversation about marrying off the female MC who was allowed to go to university to study, but is now being married off, yet she is allowed to go home alone? I'm left wondering if there is any precedent for chaperoning young ladies to 'preserve them' for their husbands and prevent unwanted pregnancy. The long and short of it is, there are details in these scenes that I found quite jarring because I was having difficulty understanding characters actions and reactions within the context of the world.
This also feeds in to the style and story score unfortunately, without that understanding and exposition a high fantasy requires, it's very hard to follow the events and, subsequently, the plot.
