War Machine: The Memoirs of a Synthetic Marine
Community Rating
Description
Josh McCann awakes to find that he has become a convicted criminal, sentenced to years of interstellar combat in support of humanity's expansion throughout the universe.
No longer human, he is now a digital facsimile of himself, intended to serve as the brains in a variety of semi-autonomous weapons systems employed by humanity to "clean up" human habitable planets.
His memories of his previous life have been confiscated and access to them is now dependent upon his performance evaluations as a Marine serving in the Universal Synthetic Marine Corps.
Josh struggles to adapt to life aboard a USMC troopship. The constant simulator training, deadly combat missions, and the challenges of navigating a bizarre new social order cause him to question whether he can survive his sentence. The uncertainty of what his life would be like after the USMC has him questioning whether he even wants to.
Things are never as they appear in troopship land thanks to manipulation by Command, and the ingenuity of the Marines as they seek to maintain some control over their collective destiny.
Oh, and there's space combat, romance, social commentary etc.

- temofonteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I do enjoy the world building alot very wow humanity did what feeling. I love the whole political part that's hinted at. The combat is fun to read so far. Not to indepth but I am sure that will change since it's only been his first mission.
The char development is fairly nice its always fun when people question everything. The keeping the politicians honest bit made me chuckle. As did how the ai has entertainment. I am intrested to see how this turns out. So yeah great writing keep it up! - DeathbysleepRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5It’s not a normal dystopian shoot’em up. The facts, which come out slowly are more disturbing as our MC claws he ways through the daily grind and fear of unending war. The ending is far from soothing and happy, but somehow satisfying.
i actually liked, disliked, and then liked again the story as the MC mentally breaks and take you with him, it a self distructive path that is all too relatable and pulls himself back (with a lot of help). In fact, I felt that the side characters were fleshed and sometimes deeper than the MC. It can be a tough read as I related to things, but I’m happy that I read it.
