Yet fate was unkind to the mage. Before his work was complete, the egg was stolen from him—plundered by thieves who saw only its worth in gold. It passed from hand to hand, traded in secretive black markets, until it came into the possession of a young duke of Velmora—Duke Adravan Vaelthorne. To the nobility, dragon eggs were rarities of immeasurable value, symbols of power and prestige, even if they were never meant to hatch. But this egg was unlike any other. Twisted by the mage’s experiments, something within had already changed.

Six months after the purchase, against all natural law, the egg hatched.
